NFT: 4/19 Knicks Talk: James Dolan speaks

LawrenceTaylor56 : 4/19/2018 7:03 am
Actually a pretty good article. Pretty much called out Phil Jackson for being lazy. Couple quotes.

On KP and hockey:

Quote:
“Basketball is different than hockey,” the Garden executive chairman said during a conversation at his MSG office on Wednesday. “A great player in hockey is the difference, but a great player in basketball is the team.

“And I think we have a great player in Porzingis. We just have to build around him.”

“I’ve been told everything from December to him being out for the season, so I don’t know what to expect on that,” Dolan said. “But we can’t just sit on our ass while he’s away. We need to develop a team and then integrate him into it when he comes back.”

On the current coaching search:

Quote:
“The old-style coaching doesn’t work,” Dolan said. “A coach who tries to do everything himself isn’t going to be successful.

“The coaching search for the Knicks is similar in a lot of ways to the Rangers. I think the teams are in similar spots. We’re looking for people to develop players and to create a winning team. We have our lists of candidates, but the lists are still open.”

On Phil Jackson:

Quote:
“Everybody who wants to talk about the Knicks wants to ask me about Phil Jackson,” Dolan said, smiling and shaking his head. “The entire market wanted to me to hire him and when I did, the entire market said it was a great move. The only thing was, everyone said that I shouldn’t interfere with him.

“Three years later, everyone wanted to know when I was going to do something about Phil. The same people who told me not to interfere wanted me to interfere. But that’s OK. I just think that Phil underestimated the job.”

So it's down to so far David Blatt, David Fizdale, Mark Jackson, Jerry Stackhouse, Mike Woodson and Kenny Smith. Still hoping for Nick Nurse.

Same here. I wanted Phil in the worst way. Then when he wanted to trade KP I was done.

I just hope he picks the right guy now and not some retread who wasn't successful. We've had enough of those.
Dolan did finally stop meddling and left Jax alone
mfsd : 4/19/2018 7:21 am : link
and as much of a turd as Dolan is, he’s well within his rights to get a few shots in at Jax
Still sounds ridiculous

that dolans’s Going off of “everyone else said I should do X”. Not sure what other owners are going off here mentality. He doesn’t know what to do, but neither does “everyone else” so it’s all fine.

Ugh...the failing New York Knicks
trueblueinpw : 4/19/2018 8:16 am : link
No offense to anyone here, but hiring Jackson never seemed liked a good idea to me. Why would anyone have thought that Jackson would be a good front office person? He had extensive ties to the Lakers, he was old, his success had been as a coach, yes, but that was with some of the greatest players in NBA history and, probably the kiss of death for anyone, he was working for Dolan. Seemed like a recipe for failure to me.

I also don’t think Dolan is correct saying that one player makes an NBA Champion. It seems to me that NBA contenders have two legit superstars and then a collection of good starters and a probably spark/roll player from the bench. Maybe the problem with the Knicks is that they’re always trying to get that one superstar player? Which, yeah, you need, but I think you also need a legit 2nd star.

Anyone, no one’s ever going broke betting against Jimmy D.
Boy you people are suckers
arniefez : 4/19/2018 8:37 am : link
Phil Jackson was a disaster a complete incompetent horror show. He would have crashed and burned with an owner who didn't interfere. But Dolan didn't interfere with Phil Jackson?

Jackson wanted Steve Mills? Jackson wanted to keep all of the scouts? Jackson didn't want Steve Kerr? The first day on the job Jackson found out that everything Dolan promised was bullshit.

As far as the Rangers go Dolan traded all of their young players and all of their draft picks and have turned them in ice skating Knicks. No playoffs and one of the worst teams in the league.

Good luck rooting for either team as long as he's alive.

Yeah this is a good point. In so many words he’s admitting making decisions based on what the critics say.

Jackson wanted Kerr
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/19/2018 8:54 am : link
Kerr wanted no part of this team. Not sure why there's blame for that. They offered Kerr a big contract.

Kenny Smith will meet with the Knicks, great. But what about Ettore Messina, Mike Budenholzer and Jeff Van Gundy? Really?

Instead of being a commentator, perhaps he could find out why?
He never said or hinted that Jackson was lazy.
Keith : 4/19/2018 9:34 am : link
He's saying that Jackson was in over his head. Again, this is on Dolan. If Jackson had no idea what he was in for, then why the hell did we hire him in the first place? Public pressure?

I still can't believe there are people on bbi who defend Dolan. Just because he's not in the news as much(except when he's acting like a moron at games), doesn't mean he's not still a major problem.
Enough with the Jeff Van Quitter bullshit

that VanGundy would accept analytics into his decision making. He comes across very old school, no?

Smith? Awful. How Coach Bud is a great coach. Messina is a great coach. So far I'm underwhelmed with the names outside of Fizdale.

Coach bud is lost likely the draft compensation...

Messing I dont know why not..

Smith was a shock to me, possible agent favor

There are no words. Might as well give Clyde an interview while they're at it.
I'm not gonna freak out until it's time to freak out.
bceagle05 : 4/19/2018 9:54 am : link
I think Stackhouse is the right guy for this job at this time, and Fizdale and Blatt are fine alternatives. If it's one of those three, I'm good.

I don't take the Woodson interview seriously - it's probably just another way to get a dig in at Phil. Kenny Smith would be a ridiculous hire, and Mark Jackson would be a travesty.
Not a lot of good news
ghost718 : 4/19/2018 10:09 am : link
Porzingis is the new Carmelo, the front office is walking around with "I Love Latvia" pins.

Trying to modernize the Knicks, but really just copying off what other teams are doing in other sports.

Mark Jackson...
Mike in St. Louis : 4/19/2018 10:14 am : link
"If Knicks brass has read “Betaball,’’ there are enough red flags about coaching candidate Mark Jackson to stop a NASCAR race.

The recently released book detailing the making of the Warriors dynasty painted a bleak picture of Jackson being too resistant to analytics, mismanaging his coaching staff, making an ill-timed, anti-gay remark and harboring a distant relationship with the Warriors’ front office, among other failings."

definitely doesn't seem to be a good fit for what Knicks claim to be looking for in a coach...

It's a shame Mark Jackson even got an interview.
bceagle05 : 4/19/2018 10:27 am : link
He fits none of the criteria the Knicks have laid out. Mills even mentioned the Warriors GM as a guy whose opinion he sought about good coaching candidates.
Jackson and Woodson felt like throwaway interviews
nygiants16 : 4/19/2018 10:30 am : link
Both on the same day..

Stackhouse came to new york monday and tueaday..

Fizdale they contacted 2 weeks before they fired hornacek...

Feel like this are the top 2 candidates..

Woodson worked with fizdale in Atlanta, so possible they talked to Woodson about being an assistant as well...

giantsfan44ab : 4/19/2018 11:01 am : link
I wanna see how Favors continues to play. He would be at a discount compared to Randle. Rebounding is a flaw but he averaged 8-9 RPG before gobert took off in Utah. Great individual defender while KP provides rim protection. His mid range game has improved the last 2 years. He's still only 26 and this is his 9th season somehow.
Also
Jon in NYC : 4/19/2018 11:03 am : link
unrelated, but the guy I want if we don't get Mikal Bridges is Wendell Carter. Smart guy, long arms, shooter, rebounder, good passer.

I think he got overshadowed by Bagley and isn't explosive, but very easily could have an Al Horford type game in the pros, which is exactly what we need next to Kristaps.

He said Phil underestimated the job. How is that not calling him lazy? PJax has been around the NBA for far too long to not really understand the ins and outs of the role. He only took the job as a free fat paycheck. That's it. He was a bum. And a lazy one at that.
Yeah I like Wendell Carter, too.
bceagle05 : 4/19/2018 11:08 am : link
Willy's gone, O'Quinn's likely gone, Kanter's gone this summer next, and Noah's in exile - we were cornering the market on big men for awhile there, now we need one.
Jon
Pete44 : 4/19/2018 11:29 am : link
I agree with you on Carter, I like his footwork.

On the coaching front, I have heard from my friend they want Fizdale, but Fizdale is investigating other coaching jobs and potentially waiting to see if Milwaukee opens up.
Milwaukee's
Jon in NYC : 4/19/2018 11:48 am : link
almost certainly going to open up. That team is so poorly run.

If Fizdale chooses elsewhere I really hope it's Stack.
Carter has a good game
giantsfan44ab : 4/19/2018 11:56 am : link
I just think it's more worth while swinging and missing on a wing player than a big when we're not dealing with the consensus star players. All the top teams are able to get solid big production with guys on exceptions or vet mins.

Obviously if the Knicks view carter as having star talent, theres exceptions to be made, but if there are wings that are valued similarly to Carter I tend to lean towards selecting those wing types.
And if Kanter opts out
giantsfan44ab : 4/19/2018 11:58 am : link
there will be a lot of money to be had to chase a good big player (Randle, Favors this year, potentially whiteside next year, although it's not looking good for whiteside currently).

Says KP may miss next year entirely. While that is unlikely to be true, regardless...what is the point of saying that other than making the HC job less desirable. What a fool.
I thought Perry would be different
moespree : 4/19/2018 12:12 pm : link
And while I'm not giving up on him yet...I'm also now inclined to believe he'll join the long list of dismissed Knicks GMs and the team will be right back to the same tired GM introductory press conferences 3-5 years from now.

I did think Perry has done good things.

1 Kicking Melo to the curb made NYK basketball fun again (until the KP injury), getting some decent value was nice

Side note: watching Melo last night made me laugh. What a bum. Ever-increasing inefficiency on O and as we all know, he contributes NOTHING in any other way.

2 Not only finding Trey Burke, but locking him up for next year. When people were inexplicably making the Burke/Jimmer comp, it was clear they hadn't seen how his game developed

3 see # 2 but for Troy Williams

So a few things...

Dolan saying fans didn't want him to interfere isn't 100% accurate. We didn't want him to interfere in the day to day operations of the team, but nobody ever said he shouldn't still be an owner and be the boss of his employees.

As for the coaching search... I am not really excited by any of the names we've heard. One name I'd like to throw into the mix is Darren Erman. He's the top assistant in Memphis and well regarded by many. He's 42, and has been an assistant for Popovich, Larry Brown, and Brad Stevens. He's also the guy who allegedly taped Mark Jackson in GS and reported it to the front office, but as it turns out that probably wasn't a bad thing.

And Mikal Bridges would be a horrible pick for us. :-)
If Kanter opts out
GMEN46 : 4/19/2018 1:11 pm : link
And there is really no shot at trading for a star, then offering 18-20 for randle or gordon makes sense. I’m assuming Orlando def matches. Is randle unrestricted? I guess a core of Zinger, Randle, 2018 lottery pick, Frank, Dotson and future 6th man of the year trey Burke isn’t bad. The key will be finding a way to move hardaway before 2019.

Even in this scenario if Zinger holds out on the extension and hardaway can be moved for an expiring during the year you could potentially get 2 maxes in 2019, one via sign and trade. If hardaway and baker are off the books in 2019. You can sign a max guy and then package 2019 potential lottery pick and other picks with Noah and Lee expirings to get another max guy. Then go over the cap for Zinger extension right?
What’s wrong
