Gettleman on Josh Rosen: "He is bright, insightful. Wants to play football." Shoots down popular narrative on #UCLA QB. #nfldraft

This is actually interesting, because earlier in the PC, he said specifically "I don't want guys that like to play football, I want guys that gate to lose".

Very true.
he is very entertaining......saying nothing
George from PA : 4/19/2018 2:40 pm : link
one thing....he is a likeable guy....much better face of the Giants than his predecessor who seemed to hate every minute talking in public.

Gentleman sounds like a guy you are talking with in a bar.

Reese sound like someone is checking his prostate
How could he? He doesnt know who cleveland is taking...
Torrag : 4/19/2018 2:43 pm : link
I don't think that's what he meant. I believe he reallly doesn't know whi he prefers yet. He's going to take all the time he has knowing what a huge decision this is for the franchise. He'll probably go to bed the night before the draft with a final idea and sleep on it and see how he feels about it in the morning.
from what I gathered,
Joe in CT : 4/19/2018 2:44 pm : link
he is going to row of 3, most likely at the top of Giants board is going to be a QB/RB/DE (pass rusher). Then need will come into play so they fill highest rated on board with highest value of their given need. Interesting.

I feel DG loves the back and forth with media and has a genuinely relaxed easy going personality to boot, funny guy!
I will be shocked if it's not Barkley...

FatMan in Charlotte : 4/19/2018 2:48 pm : link
most definitely doesn't have a relaxed easy-going personality, but the guy loves to discuss football. Start getting into any other subjects, especially about off the field stuff and he gets testy and can clam up.

Football and food he'll banter with the reporters all day about.
The
AcidTest : 4/19/2018 2:50 pm : link
analogy to grades and concomitant discussion about the importance of depth might indicate a greater willingness to trade down than previously thought.

The remark about being able to "boil water" seems like a reference to Apple.

I agree that he seems like a jovial, fun, guy.

Profanities about Reese are wrong.
Surprised this thread isn't getting more action....
Britt in VA : 4/19/2018 3:14 pm : link
considering it's a direct interview with the guy that's making the pick one week from today, and probably the most direct insight into what the org is thinking.

Gettleman said it is "hogwash" that you have to draft a QB at No. 2 #NFLDraft

Don't tell that to BBI.

Gettleman: Picking the wrong QB is a 5-year mistake. Compared the top QBs as having lots of flavors at Ben and Jerrys. He adds that if a QB cant make plays from the pocket you cant win.

Can Eli make plays from the pocket any more?, he certainly can't Escape.
Sorry haven't been able to watch...

He just reiterated that "missing on a QB is a five year mistake". Don't get too big a woody just yet, it also applies to picking the wrong QB.

I would argue that missing on any player with a top 3 pick is at least a 3 year mistake--unless you're fortunate enough to be able to cover up their weaknesses the way the Rams seemed to do last year with Greg Robinson. The flip side is, hitting on a QB is often a 10 + year success that allows you to build around him for a decade. And DG said, it's the second pick, you can't miss. Doesn't matter what position it is, a miss is going to set the franchise back a handful of years at least. I would say though that as for QBs, the rookie salary cap makes the miss less devastating than pre-rookie cap days.

Anything mentioned on Josh Allen?

Darnold is 1A but probably going first overall.
Barkley is 1B and is probably a made man in NY in a week.
So Im saying I agree.
Beckham, Shepard, Engram, Barkley, Eli....
missing with the #2 pick

3 yards and a cloud of dust plays into hogmollies and Giants
football.
Gettleman also rode that philosophy to a Superbowl in Carolina.

most positions you know what you have pretty soon. On QBs that isnt the case. One to two years to get on the field, then a couple of years to know if they can really play. That isnt true of other positions.

Zog is correct
He did a good job of being friendly and talkative

while really saying not much (which is exactly what he should have done). Some interesting takeaways.

Started the press conference by saying he didn't want guys who like to play football, but guys who hate to lose. When asked about Rosen, he said "he wants to play football."

Barkely is a guy his mother could scout. An incredible talent.

Sounds like they still use "rows" based on draft grades and don't look too far outside that about who may be available later when deciding between multiple prospects.

The college game is so different now that much of the player evaluation is on instincts, effort, and physicality. Harder to rate guys on specific skills when you don't know what they are asked to do, or what they have been taught. Interesting example about an LB not being able to shed blocks "maybe he was never taught that. That's a skill we can teach."
My take from what Gettleman said today...
M.S. : 4/19/2018 5:31 pm : link

...he's trying to scare Cleveland into a must-take-Saquon Barkley with the first pick to clear the field so he can nab the first QB off the Board.

Funny, I don't watch much college FB, but 3 yards and a cloud of dust doesn't seem to describe a. Barkley, b. Shurmer or c. what Shurmer's Giants offense would be with Barkley, OBJ, et. al.
