Not my thing, but I know about half or more of the people in my office today will be celebrating. I’m sure the city will be a little foggy. For those who partake, enjoy!
Stoner culture is the worst. 4/20 just amplifies it. Hint, when morning news shows are wishing people happy 420 you know it has jumped the shark.
Well maybe the point is that it’s a “coming out” day. Most “stoners” have jobs, pay taxes and are sick of being treated like criminals because they would rather blaze a joint, etc, and hang out and laugh rather than crush a case of Budweiser and look to start fights with people wearing another team’s jersey.
As for jumping the shark, saying jumped the shark has jumped the shark.
And that’s a complete and utter joke. Reefer madness has been more harmful on the people of this country than any joint anyone has smoked. Which is why that’s going to change. Soon.

other claims to fame, 4/20 was the "Battle of Quebec" AKA the Good Friday Massacre.

Pretty much agree. For all those who partake, enjoy, today and every day you see fit. And I’m glad we’re veering away from committing police resources to hunting guys selling dime bags, etc.
But I’ve also spent time in Denver since they legalized it - downtown has turned into a haze of stoned zombies who haven’t showered in weeks or cut their hair in years wandering the streets all day begging for change. Some even get offended when you decline to help pay for their next joint.
I’ve never been a “get a fucking job” type guy, I have a don’t judge unless you’ve walked a mile in someone’s shoes view...but I came closer there than ever before.
I don't own weed apparel or waltz around telling everyone how stoned I get, mannnnnn.
But I'm glad that the overall perception of marijuana is changing and evolving. As recently as my own childhood, it was viewed as this evil gateway drug and lumped together with much more dangerous, much more addictive drugs.
The medicinal properties are fantastic and there are some great benefits if you know how to be a responsible adult about it.

I'm convinced this story is bullshit. I have my own theory on where the term 420 originated and it's the reason you won't hear me saying it.

The real meaning around 420 is 4:20 pm smoking culture that evolved and took off and eventually took over 4/20. True story.
I don't believe it's true.
From what I was taught, it was high school kids getting out of school , getting their friends houses and smoking up usually at 4:20 pm. It. Became a thing and took off.

I got that info from Joseph Foreman himself.
That's what everyone's been told (the so-called Waldos from San Raphael High School in the early 70's) but it doesn't ring true to me. Of course it certainly makes for a better story than telling everyone in originated with skinheads who grow and sell weed.
p.s.-- And if you check out the scene in Pulp Fiction with the white supremacists, you'll notice that all the clocks in that shop are set to 4:20.
RE: RE: Sounds intriguing but if you can’t post it Â
What would be the relationship between Hitler and pot?
The skinheads. It's not like I've researched it, but from tidbits I've come across here and there, growing and selling weed is a source of income among them. There's even a famous breeder who was outed by Mark Emery as a skinhead after he switched to another seed distributor.
And the story of a bunch of High School kids in 1971 who used it as their code to get together at 4:20pm to smoke weed, well, it just doesn't make sense to me that something like that would lay dormant for 30+ years before ultimately becoming a country-wide popular expression (I've been smoking weed since 1973 and I first heard it called 420 in the mid-90's).
can spread the term faster than a group of teens searching for weed with a treasure map.
but this article based on a huffpo article explains how the waldos expanded from their local term to global.
I believe the grateful dead and high times could help spread the term, a lot more than skinheads who adopt 420 because it's Hitler's birthday and somehow because they sell weed they say 420 to the buyers? still unclear how hitler, skinheads and weed connect to have weed consumers adopt the day.
Quote:
Obviously, it takes more than a few high school stoners to turn “420” into an international phenomenon. According to the Huffington Post’s reporting (which you really should read in full), the Waldos’ had friends and family members who used to hang out with the Grateful Dead. Eventually, members of the Dead and their entourage started saying “420” to refer to weed. As the band played hundreds of concerts a year all over the world in the 70s and 80s, the term spread.
In 1990, a Deadhead handed a flyer to High Times reporter Steven Bloom that repeatedly used the term “420.” Soon, the magazine began using the phrase, too. High Times is probably responsible — at least in part — for pulling the term from Grateful Dead subculture and making it mainstream.
yeah, I'm not seeing how it would make the jump from skinheads Â

Think about it this way - before the internet, how easy would it be for such a thing to spread nationwide? Not particularly easily, I'd say. I first heard it in the mid-late '90s, like you. What happened in the mid-90s? The birth of the world wide web, allowing something like that to rapidly spread. Honestly, that sounds a lot more likely than ordinary stoners picking up a catchphrase designed to glorify Hitler from racist skinheads.
RE: yeah, I'm not seeing how it would make the jump from skinheads Â
The skinheads, unfortunately, are a very large subculture. It's not uncommon for terms that originate and become popular within a subculture to eventually blend into the mainstream. I would imagine that's how most slang terms evolve.

Yup. I oppose ALL prohibition and am very glad that the WOD is dying a little bit more every day......but yeah, they're the fuckin' worst.

Not sure. He was hooked on many other drugs, maybe if he just smoked pot...
