Eli Manning Deserves Better...

M.S. : 4/20/2018 7:26 am

...so says Michael Salfino of FiveThirtyEight.

This passage in particular caught my eye.

"Whether it’s purely optics or genuine respect for a player who will one day have his number retired, franchise-leading passers have traditionally been spared the humiliation of watching their replacements earn a nearby locker."

But this narrative that he somehow should be spared the things that have happened to many great quarterbacks over the years, is difficult to understand.

Even the reaction to his benching last season was unusual. The Giants stunk, Eli had played poorly, coach was trying to save his job, and yes he felt Geno gave him better chance to win.

Phil Simms was benched for Scott Bruner, he got pissed, but that was the end of it.

Eli is a great Giant, there have been others before him that have been replaced. Plus, if you re not part of the soloution, you re part of the problem.

Eli might indeed spring back this season, I m a Giants fan, I hope he does. But he has been part of the problem.

Regardless of the topic is that is horribly written and disjointed article.

And the sloppy attempt are using some statistics shows Manning is older and way suckier than the teams who have replaced good quarterbacks.
Yeah sure
UberAlias : 4/20/2018 7:54 am : link
Teams are supposed to wait until a player is done before they look for his replacement? That's a plan for disaster. The Patriots have invested in many QBs, and not just with the idea of them being backups, and they'll draft one again this year given the opportunity. And Brady is still reaching the SB, whereas Giants have had one winning seasons in the past 5 years. Everyone else from the SB teams (coach, GM, every other starter) is gone. No one player is above the organization.
Are the Patriots
eugibs : 4/20/2018 7:58 am : link
sentimental with their players? No. When you are done, you are out. It's a business, not a big group hug. Eli is a grown man who has made millions upon millions of dollars. Anyone spending one second of their day feeling bad for Eli Manning has a very warped perspective on reality.

As has been the case since the day they drafted him in 2004: Eli will be fine.

Eli Has Gotten What He Deserves
Jeffrey : 4/20/2018 8:19 am : link
Appreciate the loyalty of so many Giant fans and their appreciation for Eli. I felt the same way about Simms. Eli has not been mistreated. He is well-paid , particularly in a what-have you-done-for-me lately NFL. He is a hero in NY, had an outstanding 14 year career and been given opportunities that will help him after football. But those who think that Eli can stall the march of time, discover the fountain of youth and suddenly become a QB he has not been in years if only he has an RB or an improved line are setting themselves up years of frustration. One RB or OL player cannot fix all the problems of this team. Cannot make Eli quicker, more mobile, more accurate.

Gettleman is right in saying that if you make a mistake in evaluating a QB in the draft it can set you back for 5 years. The same is true if you make a mistake in evaluating a 37 year old QB who is still playing. Draft the damn QB, let Eli teach him and try to develop some continuity for the next generation.
Eli needs to go on Carson...

So we shouldn’t draft the next great giants qb because of Eli’s feelings???

Anyone who thinks that way is an absolute idiot.

Guys, we have a shot to solidify the qb position if the player at 2 fits the giants criteria. Stop overthinking this!!!! You guys are losing your mind.
This Narrative
lax counsel : 4/20/2018 9:30 am : link
Amongst some of the fan base and best writers is completely ridiculous. He is a 37 year old qb, being paid to perform like a top 5 qb when he's performed more like a bottom 10 qb over the past 2 seasons.

Just as picking the wrong qb can set you back 5 years, staying with an aging and declining qb can also set you back five years. I fear, however, that this is what the Giants will do, it has been a poorly run franchise for a half decade and this would be keeping with that tone.

Mayhap : 4/20/2018 10:12 am : link
I think the teams and schemes that he has had to deal with throughout his career never really allowed him to reach his full potential, I think he's a better QB than he's ever been given credit for, and I think he still has some good football left in him, possibly even championship level with the right pieces around him.

But none of that means they shouldn't draft his replacement this year.
I will be forever grateful for Eli Manning
JoeyBigBlue : 4/20/2018 10:15 am : link

he's not a very good qb and hasnt been a very good qb over the last two years

now how much of that had to do with mcadoo and the poo poo platter reese put around him remains to be seen but in no way should he be impacting this pick
I agree with every word Mayhap said

no one is a bigger fan of Eli Manning than I am. He's going to be in the Giants Ring of Honor, he's going to be in the discussion for the NFL HOF. He's been paid about 250 million dollars and he's earned it. But it's time for the next guy either next year or the year after. Maybe even this year if the season goes down the tubes again.

and even some poorly run businesses have replacements in training. You don't stay in in business, or any kind of organizational existence without prepping for the future, especially with an employee hearing retirement age.
The thread title makes a lot of sense; Eli has deserved the draft better the last 5+ years.
The comment in the thread makes no sense at all
it's dumb
japanhead : 4/20/2018 10:50 am : link
to look at eli's 2016 season and come away with the conclusion that he was somehow holding the team or the offense back.. i agree his 2017 was a bit of a disaster, as was his 2013, but i don't think you can lock onto those two seasons and say unequivocally that he's "done." perhaps i'm being sentimental but i remember eli being the only offensive player to show up to the green bay playoff game january 2017, whereas his receivers shit the bed. this past season all of his receivers were on IR or missed huge chunks of time, and the giants rushing attack has only gotten worse since bradshaw retired. after all eli has done he gets the benefit of the doubt from me
So, you guys are willing to sacrifice this next season,
SHO'NUFF : 4/20/2018 11:28 am : link
for the sake of the next 12-14 seasons? (6 seasons, if we draft Rosen)
Simms is arguably the greatest Giant QB all time up to Eli
weeg in the bronx : 4/20/2018 12:58 pm : link
As mentioned he was benched for Brunner
Then he lost his job to Hoss after being injured during what was the best statistical season of his career at that point.
Then the Giants use a supplemental draft pick to select a QB to replace him in the first round.
He is cut after leading the team back into the playoffs for that draft pick. So Dave Brown could play.
Its fair to argue that Simms is a lock for the HOF if he doesn't lose those three season. Tough to argue in hindsight that his benching was the wrong decision too.
Eli has had it good compared to Phil.
That's complete nonsense.

Even if that were true (and it's not, because the draft is always for the future), you just asked whether 12-14 seasons could outweigh one season. Do you understand how asinine you sound?

This is exactly what I thought of. I love Eli but if Montana can be replaced so can Eli. It’s a business, not personal. But what they did with Geno was a disgrace. The season was lost no need to make an issue like they did. They should have never told Eli the plan and if the Raider game got away they should have pulled Eli for Geno at that point. Actually they should have pulled him for Webb and let the rookie sink or swim.
