NFT: Rome, Italy Recommendations Needed

NYGmen58 : 4/20/2018 3:00 pm
Hey guys/gals, I will be travelling through Italy for the first time this August and will be in Rome for a a couple days. I was wondering where the best area/neighborhood is to stay in terms of good hotels, proximity to sights/attractions, etc. I assume there is a central part of town but wasn't sure if there is a specific name or district to look into.

Also, given I'm only there for 2 nights with just one full day, what are the best activities/points of interest worth doing. I know one could easily spend a week in Rome and not see enough but what are the "must do's" for a first-timer with really just a day or so to explore/enjoy the city? Sistine Chapel, Pantheon, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, St. Peter's Basilica seem to be the "top five" but any advice on the above or otherwise would be greatly appreciated. Equally appreciated are opinions on what may NOT be worth visiting or is overrated, especially given the limited time I'm there.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!
I don't want to steer you wrong...

but, I'm pretty sure the Rome Pass will enable you to skip the lines to some (if not all) the sites.

Also, Rick Steves is a great resource.

Have fun!

don't try to do too much. Pick one activity a day

and spend the rest strolling around the spanish steps or campo de fiore. I think depending on your likes/dislikes, the Vatican, and Colosseum/Roman Forum are worth doing but get a guide. Your hotel should be able to help with that. If you want to see everything, do a segway tour.
Bring good walking shoes for the cobblestoned streets

We were just there two months ago.

We stayed at Hotel Quirinale, which is next the Reppublica train station and 7 min walk to the Terminale train terminal.

It s only 8 a min ride to the Vaticans. Just be aware of pickpockets when in crowded spaces.

Hailing cabs was a challenge because you are supposed to get them at taxi stands but they are hard to find! It was cold and miserably rainy when we were there for 4 days.

Did the Coliseum (NEW Belvedere tour that goes up to the top ring and underground - well worth it!), Roman Forum, Borghese Gallery, Vaticans - including the Necropolis tour under St Peters basilica.

We booked advanced tickets for the Coliseum belvedere tour and Vatican Museum tour, and Necropolis tour. Borghese gallery wasnt necessary to book in advance for February but maybe for high season.

The coliseum tour ticket includes access to the Roman forum and Circus Maximus. Highly recommended. Tour ticket does not include entry ticket so you have to buy that on arrival, same for the Vatican museum tour.
Link to the official Colosseum tour site, not some tour company - ( New Window )
Be aware of closing times for various places

since you are so short on time.

August is a busy month so you need good efficient planning and advanced booking.

You can walk through Spanish steps, Trevi fountains and Panetheon in 20 minutes. That can be done at night. Pantheon closes at 6 pm so you might want to start from there first.

Vaticans museum takes at least half a day.
The last entry ticket for Borghese gallery

is at 5pm ending at 7pm. You can see it all in an hour and a half or less.

Visit Travastere and Piazza Navona at night time.
I spent 6 days in Rome once

If there were only 2 things I could see they would be the Colosseum and most surprisingly it would have to be Sant Ignazio Chruch. Out of all the work of art I saw when I back packed through Rome,Paris,Frankfurt, and Amsterdam the ceiling of that church was the most impressive thing I have ever seen. The ceiling is flat but is painted like it has a arched ceiling.

Fake Dome
Stay in Trastevere

A very cool happening area. Great restaurants. Very lively.

Medieval neighborhood.
Agreed - Stay in Trastevere

Trastevere is awesome - definitely just wander around there at night for or after dinner

Also enjoy some long lunches in Campo di Fiori and Piazza Navona

Quick tip:

Many religious sites in Italy have a dress code. For instance, women may have to cover their shoulders, or wear an appropriate length leg covering. This is far from universal, but if you are going to a cathedral you should check ahead.

Days. They will take you to all the top sights and get you in an out.

Vatican is pretty much an all day tour. For food I might go local rather than top shelf.

Nighttime. Spend one night in Campo de Firori. Cool bars like the drunken ship.

Campo de Fiori was what I was going to recommend also. Really fun night.
too bad you only have one full day

you really need a week in Rome, try to book a hotel near the Pantheon that is close to everything, you can walk to all the best attractions from the Pantheon or short cab ride. If you have one day the one thing that is must do is get the Vatican City tour, your will go to St. Peter's Square, go inside the cathedral (incredible work of art and engineering), see the tomb of St. Pete and Pope JP if your Catholic is a awe inspiring experience. Then go inside the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. I get chills thinking of it, it is incredible, the history and art will blow your mind. All the Piazza's have great outdoor Cafes, I rank the extra sites in this order Pantheon #1, Spanish Steps #2, Coliseum #3, Piazza Navona #4 and Trevi Fountain at night #5. Have fun it is the greatest city in the world.
Avoid crowds

Trastevere. Absolutely.
See the Colessium and then vist San Clemente Basilica
PatersonPlank : 4/21/2018 1:40 pm : link
You can walk into any church in Rome and be amazed, but San Clemente is special. The first level is a church built around 1100 AD, then underneath this is a church built around 400 AD. Under that, and discovered during a renovation, is a house from the time of Jesus that was destroyed by the fire of 64 AD. It is believed that this is where Christians gathered in private so as not to be seen.

Tremendous history there.
