Hey guys/gals, I will be travelling through Italy for the first time this August and will be in Rome for a a couple days. I was wondering where the best area/neighborhood is to stay in terms of good hotels, proximity to sights/attractions, etc. I assume there is a central part of town but wasn't sure if there is a specific name or district to look into.
Also, given I'm only there for 2 nights with just one full day, what are the best activities/points of interest worth doing. I know one could easily spend a week in Rome and not see enough but what are the "must do's" for a first-timer with really just a day or so to explore/enjoy the city? Sistine Chapel, Pantheon, Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, St. Peter's Basilica seem to be the "top five" but any advice on the above or otherwise would be greatly appreciated. Equally appreciated are opinions on what may NOT be worth visiting or is overrated, especially given the limited time I'm there.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions!
Also, Rick Steves is a great resource.
Have fun!

We stayed at Hotel Quirinale, which is next the Reppublica train station and 7 min walk to the Terminale train terminal.
It s only 8 a min ride to the Vaticans. Just be aware of pickpockets when in crowded spaces.
Hailing cabs was a challenge because you are supposed to get them at taxi stands but they are hard to find! It was cold and miserably rainy when we were there for 4 days.
Did the Coliseum (NEW Belvedere tour that goes up to the top ring and underground - well worth it!), Roman Forum, Borghese Gallery, Vaticans - including the Necropolis tour under St Peters basilica.
We booked advanced tickets for the Coliseum belvedere tour and Vatican Museum tour, and Necropolis tour. Borghese gallery wasnt necessary to book in advance for February but maybe for high season.
The coliseum tour ticket includes access to the Roman forum and Circus Maximus. Highly recommended. Tour ticket does not include entry ticket so you have to buy that on arrival, same for the Vatican museum tour.
Link to the official Colosseum tour site, not some tour company - ( New Window )
August is a busy month so you need good efficient planning and advanced booking.
You can walk through Spanish steps, Trevi fountains and Panetheon in 20 minutes. That can be done at night. Pantheon closes at 6 pm so you might want to start from there first.
Vaticans museum takes at least half a day.
Visit Travastere and Piazza Navona at night time.
Fake Dome
Medieval neighborhood.
Also enjoy some long lunches in Campo di Fiori and Piazza Navona

I sat there staring at it for 20 minutes
Vatican is pretty much an all day tour. For food I might go local rather than top shelf.
Nighttime. Spend one night in Campo de Firori. Cool bars like the drunken ship.

Trastevere. Absolutely.
Tremendous history there.
