Giants trading for punter

QB Snacks : 4/20/2018 7:06 pm
Sources: The #Giants are in the process of trading for #Broncos P Riley Dixon. When Marquette King signed in Denver, he was on the trading block and NYG swooped in.

Conditional 2019 7th rounder . He will compete with an UDFA punter
Dave better not
Strahan91 : 4/20/2018 7:10 pm : link
be trading a 4th rounder for a punter like he did in Carolina...
Gettleman gave the Browns a fourth rounder
shyster : 4/20/2018 7:13 pm : link
in 2016 for a punter (Andy Lee) and the Browns ultimately turned that pick into Jarvis Landry.

When I read that the other day, I thought, "I hope he doesn't do that again."

3-13 team should not be giving up picks.
Is Dixon

good?
Guys
Jay on the Island : 4/20/2018 7:14 pm : link
The Broncos were going to cut Dixon. There is no way the Giants are trading a pick this year because they don't have a 6th or 7th. This is most likely a conditional 2019 7th round pick where the condition is that Dixon wins the punting job or plays in a certain number of games.

can't be worse than Wing was last year so even if he's the 25th best punter in the NFL it's still a big upgrade!

Ok first of all Andy Lee is a beast. He has a huge leg.. .He averaged over 50 yards a kick and 44 net average one year. That is insane. Second of all Carolina was close to winning and a big leg would be a huge difference we aren't there. That year though with Carolina he averaged 49.1 yards a punt.

So the person on here is right... it will be a conditional 2019 pick most likely a 7th rounder.
Dixon
Jay on the Island : 4/20/2018 7:19 pm : link
a 45.6 avg with a 40.2 Net with 23 out of 73 punts inside the 20.

Wing
44.1 avg and only 36.7 Net only 19 out of 95 inside the 20.

Actually his splits were about the same. Last year he averaged 45.7 at home and for the year he averaged 45.6 so not much difference.
Not that it really matters
Mark from Jersey : 4/20/2018 7:22 pm : link
but does anyone have home/away breakdown of his punt totals? Guessing playing in Denver inflates the averages/net a bit...

So not punting in Denver and only 1.5 yard avg less = nothing. Inside 20 is dependent on field position, so the Giants sucky 3 and out offense probably had Wing punting from the 30-35 yardline.
Net is as much a function of coverage and height and depth.
Q & A from DG's press conference
YANKEE28 : 4/20/2018 7:29 pm : link
Q: You said that you’ve traded up a lot. Do you have enough assets to trade up in this draft and would you dip into future drafts to trade up?

A: I’m not going to do that. I’m going to tell you that right now. Right now, I have no intention of dipping into future drafts. None.

Based on this comment, it makes me wonder if the trade for a punter is a player for player trade?

Lee only got through half that year (2016) before he went on injured reserve with a hamstring pull.

Then got cut before the '17 season, shortly after Gettleman was fired.

Bottom line, not a good trade, at all.

It is posted that his out of Denver is higher also. He also had less TB and Dixon only had 3 to his 9... Throw in he had 3 less FC despite having more punts also shows he isn't getting any height on the ball.

Oh I am not saying it was a good trade. Just saying that the player was one of the best punters in the league. This is not the same thing.
Dixon is an upgrade
Jay on the Island : 4/20/2018 7:33 pm : link
but I fully expect the Giants to go hard for a rookie punter among the UDFA's to compete with him.
This guy sounds like he fell off like Wing

Andy Lee was a Pro Bowler and an All Pro. Not quite the same thing.

Dixon was 14th in average. His net isn't good, but that's because the Broncos special teams was really bad. They were right near the Giants in punt return average.

Most likely it's a conditional 7th round pick in 2019. He's on a rookie contract for 2 years. If he sucks it cost you basically nothing to cut him. If he doesn't you got your Punter for cheap.

Fell off? He went from 45.7 with a net 41.3 to 45.6 with a net of 40.2 ... that isn't really falling off. Wing was also making a lot more money

^^ this... his game against the Chargers where they had a good return for a TD lowered his average net return away. Otherwise on the road he averaged 41.7 net away from Denver

The Giants have two 7th round picks in next year's draft, the second being the Rams' seventh rounder, which they acquired as part of the Alec Ogletree trade.

Gettleman deals the 7th rounder he made St. Louis throw in with Ogletree. Makes him look pretty smart.

Also, I feel like the purpose of 7th round picks is to get dibs on a guy you will want in UDFA anyway. Since UDFAs all pretty much make the same money at their respective positions, my guess is the Giants are often confident they can convince any which one they want to come to the Big Apple and play for the most historically renowned organizations in football.

I feel the same. It's essentially a way to lock up your priority UDFAs.
I wouldn't be surprise if we draft a punter and a placekicker

Dickson will likely go in the 4-5 round range
Jay on the Island : 4/20/2018 10:45 pm : link
If he is there in the 5th then the Giants should seriously consider him especially if they end up trading down in the 1st round.
