NFT: Going to DC tomorrow with the kids

spike : 4/20/2018 11:23 pm
for 4-5 days.

Aside from wearing my Mets hat, what should we go?

My kids are 2 and 5.
Go down on the mall

See the monuments, smithsonian, and cherry blossoms. With kids that age your options are pretty limited. Where are you staying?

a good place to park around these museums?

What about Tidal Basin and Lincoln Memorial?

Are the cherry blossoms still blooming?
Spike, so much to do in DC.

Nice weather for the zoo- I would wait until Monday as it will be crowded over the weekend. Monuments for sure- they are beautiful at night. Air and Space museum is a hit with kids. Great time of year to visit. Enjoy!
Have lunch at the roof top restaurant of the "W" Hotel.

It has great views of the White House, the National Mall and planes coming down the Potomac to land at Reagan Airport. It's free but the lunch is a bit expensive. Then after lunch walk through LaFayette Park and have your picture taken.
The spy museum is fun

Not exactly educational, but fun
Not big on advanced planning, huh?

A lot of attractions require a timed entry ticket. If you want tour the Capitol and other such things, you should try to get tickets now. Might already be too late - this is prime tourist season in DC.
All good comments

If you have time too you may want to check out Mount Vernon (Washington's Home) in Virginia and Great Falls on the Maryland side.
Do not drive in the District

Better off with Uber or Lyft. Parking is very difficult or very expensive. Two year old limits attractions. What most of the other people have said plus Air Space Museum out in Virginia may be fun. Very visual and your two year old may be entertained. Go on Monday or Tuesday. You can drive there parking is free. Make sure you go after 9 and head back before 3 to avoid traffic. National Children's Museum is closed now for renovation.
Have fun

Parking will be challenging. You are a short uber from the museums, maybe 10-12 minutes so I’d recommend uber. Cherry blossoms might be done I’m not 100% sure though. But if you’re down on the mall and at the museums you’ll be right where they are situated. Mt Pleasant and Adams Morgan have a lot of good food spots too. I suggest walking up and down 18th st and also the cross street of Columbus. There is a decent restaurant/bar at that intersection called Adams Mill that has good food also. If I think of anything else I’ll post more.

Only caveat I’d would say about he air and space museum in Virginia is that it’s about 30 miles away out near Dulles airport. But it’s very cool. And the time frame you posted is spot on for driving.

Ditch the kids for a bit & check out the Holocaust Memorial Museum. It's a museum I think everyone should see once. It's incredibly powerful.

Ditch a 2 and 5 year old? Hello Child Protection Service.
Do a Duck tour

Or one of the other tours around DC. You’ll see parts of the city besides the Mall that are much more interesting and much less travelled.
Do a Big Bus Tour.

You can find ample parking in East Potomac Park (aka Hains Point), relatively close to Jefferson Memorial. Park on Ohio Dr. SW close to the I-395 overpass. You can easily Uber/Lyft to/from this spot or walk to Jefferson and go from there.

Haha. Solid point. CPS might have an issue with that.

The kids are too young for the Capitol tour etc. Maybe in a few years.
