Saturday, All-day Draft

Allen in CNJ : 4/21/2018 7:35 am
I cannot wait any longer for the draft. It drives me nuts that we have to wait till a Thursday night to see one round, then another round the next day, and so on into Saturday.

I truly miss the Saturday, at noon, all day drafts of yesteryear (not that long ago) - that was my favorite day of the offseason by far and for the better part of 20 years, sitting and watching the draft unfold on April saturdays, even the first round, was memorable.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Agree

Completely. I hate this current format. It’s hard to have the same rituals. Changing the draft is my top reason for hating the commissioner
.
Yes!

Another good reason to dislike Goodell. The All-Day Draft scenario was awesome! I loved it. My wife did not...
Nope

I like the new format.

It makes day exciting as teams can regroup and make trades to move up in the 2nd.
I actually like it, albeit a HUGE fan of the weekend format.

I enjoy the comprehensive views/opinions of the board and some of the media for the night and full day leading up to rounds 2 and 3. Enjoy this board’s repositioning of their boards and suggestions as to who’s available and who might fit.
Lived in the city and went to the 81 draft at Radio City

The LT draft.....funny the Giants drafted 2nd and the Jets drafting 3rd as well...the drafted Freeman

we drafted TE in 2nd....never made it.

Billy Ard was only other player that made it....in 8thrd!
I miss it too, for nostalgic reasons

Some of my fondest Giants related memories of my old man were watching draft day Saturday with him. By mid day Sunday my Mom’s honey do list usually dragged him away from the TV

That was mostly before the age when reams of draft info was readily available on the web, so we’d pick up a couple local papers and a draft guide or 2 to read, come up with our own scratch draft board for the Giants and our own personal favorites on a legal pad, and spend the day talking football and discussing the Giants picks.

First round is exciting this year bc we’re picking high, but I can’t imagine a reason to sit and watch that much of the coverage otherwise.

After round 1 or 2, they don’t even show the picks announced on TV anymore, just scrolling at the bottom while talking heads bleat on
It was sort of fun

The 1981 draft was at the Sheraton in NY, not Radio City.
I like the new format

The thing that sucks is it is too late in April. I believe it was closer to the beginning or middle of the month. Free agency should start March 1st and the deaf should be the 1st or 2nd weekend of April. All they hype just drags on.

Can't wait for Thursday
I like the new format

Spreading it out over three days allows teams to regroup overnight and see if there was anybody that was overlooked the previous day. It is also useful because there just isn’t enough to say for 5-10 minutes between picks especially at the very end when they have very little highlights on a player. Only so many times you can listen to your preferred draftnik regurgitate his best players remaining
I do like the break before round 4
Jay in Toronto : 4/21/2018 9:24 am : link
That can yield intrigue.

Maybe 1-3 Sat and 4-7 Sunday?
3 day draft generates more fan excitement. Maybe not for the teams.

One day draft was an ordeal. Then, UDFA signings. This is better, because it gives teams time to reset the board and their strategy.

I would be okay with 1-3 rounds on Saturday and 4-7 rounds on Sunday, but it isn’t a prime time event that way.

like the new format, but regardless, money is the reason why the draft will never change back to just being on Saturday.
Always liked the Saturday format

Just had to take the day off and soak it all in. I despise breaking the draft up into 3 days. Never liked it.
Agreed

Fuck godell

Back in the day it was NY post, hungover, cigarette, coffee: and 'who did the giants draft.'

Now it's oh, look, that wrs mom looks frigging hot in that Christian Dior dress....

Much preferred the old format.
There was a time when Monday Night Football was a huge
baadbill : 4/21/2018 3:12 pm : link
deal. The vast majority of men watched. There were Monday Night Football gatherings at bars and homes all across the country.

There was a time when 1:00 Sunday during football season meant the Giants were on TV.

And when the draft meant replenishing a team with players who were bound to the team for their entire career.

And then came Sun night. Thu night. Shifted games. Commercial breaks after a TD. After the point after. After the kickoff. The draft spread over three days.

And then there is free agency. The NFL screwed the pooch. Should have organized as one big corporation with players as employees of the NFL, not employees of teams. That way there wouldn't be free agency. I mean it's great for the players, but frankly I'm not all that empathetic to multi-millionaires, be they professional athletes, actors, etc.

Fee agency sucks the big whazoo.

... bleh
Oh, and btw, the draft used to be during the day on weekdays
baadbill : 4/21/2018 3:14 pm : link
spread over two full days. I forget how many rounds but it was A LOT.

I used to take both days off from work (I considered it a holiday... lol)

Giants' 1981 draft also yielded John Mistler, Bill Neill and Byron Hunt. Not superstars, but all were contributors for at least a few seasons.

New format is okay though, but I think they should do it in two days, have rounds 1 and 2, on Friday night, can start at 6 pm, then all day Saturday. Three days to milking.

That's what it was up until 2010. As far as I remember, during the televised era of the draft, it was never completed in one day the way the OP describes.

Simms was drafted in 1979 on a Thu daytime draft that ended Fri.
LT was drafted in 1981 on a Tue daytime draft that ended Wed
I love the new format

When I was young with no responsibilities the old format was nice. However I'ts nice to watch Thursday and Friday then check in one Saturday on the phone while I go do other stuff. Honestly as much as I love the draft there is no way I could dedicate an entire day to watching it now.
I'm a fan of the new format
aimrocky : 4/23/2018 12:39 pm : link
it's much more difficult spending all day in front of a TV. It's nice knowing the meat of the draft is during prime TV hours and I can come and go as I please on Saturday, without feeling like I missed anything too important.
