When he retires , are they going to be moved to the glass case at Newman High? At the risk of being labeled an apostate , I ask why did Super Bowl wins 3 & 4 become the sole possession of one player, while the first two were regarded as a total team, make that organizational, effort ?
Phil Simms was 22-25 for 268 , 3-0 in Pasadena. As for his weaponry 8 of those completions went to wide receivers; 3 each to Robinson and Manuel, 2 to McConkey . Simms would be booed at the first home game of ‘87. He was sat down twice in his Giants career, once by Parcells , the second by Handley . Ultimately his career ended by release the summer following what had been a successful ‘93 season .
Jeff Hostetler, who assumed the QB position once Simms fractured his ankle against Buffalo, was 20-32 , 222, 1-0 against Buffalo. It was an exceptional relief job, similar to what Foles did last season . Hoss was cut by the Giants.
So was OJ Anderson, who was the Super Bowl MVP in ‘90. He carried the ball essentially the entire third quarter that night in Tampa. Getting to that game, against the Niners, they had the fake punt run by Reasons and the strip of the football by Howard from Craig. How about Matt Bahr? As he lined up the fateful FGA at the end of the game, he noticed that San Francisco was in a kick block formation that the Giants hadn’t seen. Bahr correctly judged that there was a weakness in the Giants formation . So he kicked the ball a little to the side. Had he centered the ball, it would have been blocked . Reasons and Bahr -cut by the Giants. Howard allowed to move on in the insane mass exodus that saw Oates, Banks, Perry Williams, Mark Collins , Marshall, Elliott and others also leave.
Eli has two Super Bowl MVPs. Great but in the first one he was 19-34 for 255, 2-1( should have been 2), with the circus catch by Tyree. There were so many clutch plays that his teammates made getting the team to the ultimate game. They are as much their trophies as Eli’s . That kid filling in at CB, I think his name was Pope, playing quarters in the end zone in Dallas agsinst Romo & Co. at the end with the game hanging by a thread . RW with the pick. Later Michael Johnson recovering McQuarter’s fumbled punt return against Green Bay. Against the undefeated Pats, the great read by Pierce . Mitchell’s deke. The perfect 2 squeeze coverage on the sideline by Where Did He Go Webster? and Wilson.
The run-up to Eli’s second : The two strips of the punt returner with the ensuing recoveries by Williams in San Francisco . In the big game Blackburn playing Gronk deep down the middle....most of these guys were cut. Cruz, Nicks, Osi , Bradshaw , Big Jake, Tuck -later . Get out.
Eli has played sub-par football , for the most part, over the last 5 seasons . His HC last year was let go during the season for exercising what is always the fundamental prerogative of every coach: deciding who plays. No matter what you think of McAdoo, he was the coach . He’s gone . They are mostly all gone . I’ve had it with Eli. Too many people have taken the hit for him. Good men have paid with their jobs because they couldn’t get him to play like his brother and Brady. Well he was never as good as those guys .
It galls me that they have to pay him 20 million this year to play football. He’s not worth it and, frankly, hasn’t been in quite sometime .
Lol I didn't expect that
What we are saying is that Eli is not quite done yet and if you give him a serviceable offensive line and some healthy weapons, he’ll show you all that.
Furthermore, we are saying don’t force a quarterback selection next week at 2 just because he’s 37. We realize he’s almost done. But, forcing the wrong pick is what gets franchises in trouble.
These threads are the fckimg worst and somehow are tolerated.
I'd flip the title to say, "Say when did it become chic to bash eli on BBI", but that answer is 2004.
Hell, you still have some people that hold the SD thing against him and it was the move that directly led to us winning two SB's.
Are you suggesting that because you think Eli is Unworthy of continuing as a starter that we should change the way we refer to quarterbacks and Super Bowl wins?
This is easily the worst thread ever created on BBI. And that’s a saying something.
Such bullshit.
Such bullshit.
Don’t forget Tom Coughlin retired because of Eli too I guess. Eli clearly disliked him too.
But theyre Eli's Lombard's so GET OVER IT !
I guess if you represented your company well and give everything you had and made them as successful as possible in the industry, and you keep getting bashed for absolutely nothing. You would be kinda pissed and hurt.
Reality: Eli is one of 3 of the greatest NY Giants players in our history. Have some respect.
Yes, it is unfair sometimes, that QB's get all the accolades in a SB victory.....but in both games, the game was on the line with the ball in his hands and he delivered....
In almost every other season, he wasn't that guy.
In 2018, you wan't to place bets?
(nobody says Eli's Lombardi's btw).
Not Cool!
He earned those MVP's and our respect.
He kicked the shit out of 3 top teams on the road and beat an undefeated team in the SB
He stood tall in SF again a D that would have crippled a lesser men
He took the worst D and worst Running game to ever reach a SB and won it.
Best QB to have ever played in NY
In almost every other season, he wasn't that guy.
In 2018, you wan't to place bets?

Eli was the cornerstone. No question. He was the man...and it was clear as day.

As opposed to anyone else in 2018? I’ll take it.
Me too
I watched as he dragged his jersey and self off the turf play after play and willed his team at every turn down the field.
Did the faits fall the Giants way a few times that night? Sure. Williams grabbed those fumbles. Bradshaw got his knee down in time.
But don't for a second doubt Manning willed, played and gutted that team to the Super Bowl.
That one is his and his alone. And fuck anyone who ever thinks or says otherwise.

What has Eli done in the (let's be generous) last two years that supports the fact that he's not done? He had no support, but it's not like he was playing well for his situation. He sucked as much as anyone. And please don't point to the one game the Eagles' D didn't take the Giants seriously.
1--- Rookie Head Coach Bill Parcells benching Phil Simms for Scott Brunner was an incredibly stupid blunder. He corrected the mistake the very next year.
2--- Just because you renounce Eli doesn’t mean you know what you’re talking about. In your zeal to renounce Eli it’s clear your predispositioned bias has affected your judgement. You give e credit to the circus catch in which Tyree was barely open even though Eli bought time BY AVOIDING THREE SACKS?
An yet YOU want to give the majority of the credit to Tyree?
Eli makes the greatest Super Bowl play in History which the play was the catalyst for turning the game around vs what was being previously discussed as going against arguably the greatest football team of all-time and you babble about on that play is David Tyree?
Let me dumb this down for you. A better WR wouldn’t have turned that catch into a circus catch. Harrison almost knocked the ball of Tyree’s hands. A much better WR would not have had to hold on to the ball with his helmet. It was a remarkable catch. – Considering that he almost lost it.
The Giants beat arguably the best team of all-time and the play Eli made by avoiding three sacks and putting the ball right on the money – then throwing the GW TD – in an upset like that and the greatest play ever and then throwing the winning TD – OFC the QB is going to get the award.

Let me know how much and I will tell u where to send my money at the end of the season...
I might be wrong, but I feel some Eli supporters oppose the selection of a quarterback because it puts a clock on Eli s career that Davis Webb does not.
That said, the OP is not wrong in suggesting that the reaction to the benching of Eli was unique in Giants lore.
Many other great Giants have been benched or shown the door without similar outcry.

Yes, Smith should have caught it, but it was a low throw and Smith scooped it, right into Harrison's(?) hands.
But you are right... Sub par the last 5 years. SMH.
Well now, that is really something! Eat your heart out Tiki and give it up for RetroJint! And lets salute the new ruler of that very special place in the realm where Joe Pisarcik, Trey Junkin and Matt Dodge relive their magical Giant moments over and over and again...forever and ever. And ever. It will be great fun and you won't ever again have to think about or share your opinions about Lombardi Trophies because the entire concept is foreign in that part of the kingdom. In fact, you actually abandon all hope upon entry to this area formerly known as TikiLand....
The rest of us will focus instead on believing that we can win in these next two years with Eli leading a well coached team with a sensible offensive scheme and a much improved supporting cast of talent. When the time comes and the championship is again on the line, Eli will lead the way and capture his third trophy for the Manning Era Giants. One more than Lombardi himself. And one more than the Taylor Era Giants.
End apoplectic rant.
You're already crying about it, as the inevitability of that possibility sets in.

In their posting when he said Eli should have had 2 INTs because the pats guy almost caught one but failed to recognize the first INT was a perfectly thrown ball dropped by Smith into the hands of a defender.

Yes, Smith should have caught it, but it was a low throw and Smith scooped it, right into Harrison's(?) hands.
Low throw towards the middle of the field to protect wr maybe? Looking at that play a lot, either Smith was late out of break, or Eli got it there too soon, or possibly a little of both. I thought the timing was the problem on that play, the throw was appropriate.
Any questions?
Yes Britt, I would also call those posters "haters"...

No one is saying Eli is the sole reason for both championships. Clearly, many others contributed.

Ok January 2018 good enough? Eli came into Lambeau throwing darts all over the field that his receivers promptly dropped.
Why do you put so much stock into a nightmare season where his best weapons were hurt, his offensive line sucked, and his young head coach proved he was not what we thought?
Accomplished analysts like Greg Cosell have broken down last year’s tape and told us exactly what we’ve known about Eli for 14 years. Put him in a decent situation and he’s a winner. If you want him to scramble away from a jailbreak blitz, it’s not happening. But, you can still win with him provided you can fix the other issues on the team. And guess what? If you fix the other issues, isn’t that a better situation for Eli’s heir apparent to walk into?
Say we love Darnold. We take him at 2. He sits a year or two. Comes into a team where the line is good, we have a prime OBJ, Shepherd, and Engram. Isn’t that better than a shaky offense? Don’t let what happened to David Carr get repeated here.

You spelled Justin Tuck wrong.
All kidding aside, SB XXV was every bit as much about Carl Banks as it was about Lawrence Taylor.
Other than Ed Danowski?

to Josh Allen’s was the ultimate in stupidity, but he may have exceeded it with this one. Did Eli steal your gf?
The funny thing about that is Eli was over 60% twice in his college career and Allen has never even sniffed 60%.
And I think RetroJint said Eli's completion % was worse!!
