The prom picture I posted was obviously intended to be a joke. My Daughter has dated her boyfriend for over a year and they knew I was joking.
I take gun safety seriously (the gun was not loaded and had no clip in) and I did not intend to be insensitive to that important issue
Woman drops her gun and kills her 2 year old daughter with a bullet to the chest. She was probably just goofing around with her four children in a hotel room, so don't make a big deal about it.
Guns are not a joke and a responsible gun owner would never brandish one without a real reason. Look at the number of Americans accidentally killed by guns every year. Casually waving a gun around is never a smart idea.

LOL..
Definitely portrays a lack of common sense and taste. That includes the gun and the belt. Wouldn't be surprised of there were white shoes as well.
It doesnt bother me. It was posted so Ill give feedback.
With the amount of angst against gun ownership, its probably a good idea to not only be responsible with owning a gun but also make it seem like you are responsible.
Feely is a complete moron here. Hopefully it wasnt loaded but way to bring a bunch of animosity towards your family for some instagram likes, Jay.
I think it's hilarious. I wish he would have doubled down instead of apologizing.
If people get offended about what a retired nfl kicker is posting , so be it. If it's not him it will be another harmless act that triggers another person looking for a forum.
Just looks like an obvious joke (albeit stupid). I can't imagine this being something worth getting bent out of shape over.
Not even anyone here in particular - just looking at the headline. This really caused an "uproar" ?
Seems like a silly thing to be up in arms over. But that's me.
Have you not gone outside in a couple years? getting outraged over the stupidest shit seems to be the latest craze

At what point did we as a society decide we have the right
to go through our lives and never be offended? It's irrational and pretty self centered to believe that every person in the world should be sensitive to the experiences, wants, needs, desires, and triggers of every other person in the world. Do people have the right to complain? Of course. But I don't see the point of it all. We've gotten to the point where people are demonized for the most innocuous, unintentional "offenses" and perceived insults. It's moralizing and grandstanding. "My views are enlightened and right, your views are mean and wrong". Are there things in life, personal views and ideas that bother me? Absolutely. But people have a right to live their lives, so long as they're not intentionally demeaning and hurting others, and I'm not going to waste my time bitching at those people in a sad, vain attempt to prop myself up as being morally superior. People need to get over themselves.

To me its not even the getting mad or complaining I get mad at some things and laugh at others. Its the ones stomping their feet creating a huge uproar until everyone agrees with them like a spoiled 16 year old girl ( yes dont care if that offends anyone). And it gets worse and worse with every generation
Im not mad or offended. I saw it before checking BBI and didnt think anything of it more than that hes an idiot. Then it was posted here, and gave the same feedback. Very poor decision just to get some likes.
not a big deal at all and actually its funny. That said thats why I don't post anything cuz any mofo with a stick up their bunghole can take any picture you post, no matter how insignificant, and tear it apart.
and I've lost track of how many stupid sitcoms dad's have made similar jokes with their daughter's prom dates. I'm more bothered by that belt others pointed out.

Everybody is sensitive, unless it follows your agenda like what Kathy Griffith did..then "it's a joke...get some humor".
And by "dumb" I think you guys are assuming that Jay Feely didn't know or actually cared that a bunch sensitive weenies were going to be outraged by a picture taken clearly in jest on his Instagram.
in order to make "a joke", would you find that funny? I've HEARD the joke and laughed, but someone actually pulling out a gun is way over the top and if he did that around my child, there would be a whole 'nother set of problems. If it's a character flaw that my family and friends don't joke by pulling out weapons, so be it.
Every father that loves his daughter has told her date, in a very bold manner and emphatic manner: You WILL not (drink/do drugs/fool around/...) ....or, You WILL(great her with respect/have her home at [time,] , won't you?...and Oh, by the way, my (gun name) is loaded.
Some dad's even show it for show, just to make them both think twice.
Sheesh, talk about sensitive whimppy winey people.
He just looks like boner.
That's just my opinion.
I think guys wearing chains with gold AK pendants on them, or tattoos of guns, or skulls & bullseyes and AR15 silhouettes all over their t-shirts & automobiles all look like boners.
actually thats why there was backlash and why he apologized.
It might have been one of the reasons there was a backlash - but doesn't make it a reasonable thing to get upset about. And he apologized because he's not just a retired kicker - he has a job in the media and doesn't want to lose it over this dumb shit. So he apologized.
But now apparently he's got Shockeyisthebest to worry about because internet tough guy would go after anyone that exposed an unarmed gun near his family. Jay is understandably trembling in fear.

Actually not true. Studies show that Generation Z is trending hard back to a centrist position, maybe even a tick right, likely as a result of the way over the top millennial attitude of self-righteousness and psuedo-outrage over everything.
The single weirdest phenomenon is the confusion between having an opinion and being outraged.
No one is outraged by this picture. No one is uproaring.
People have opinions, they make comments, they lob feelings, and then move on.
Uproar and outrage is reaction to the Parkland shootings, the chemical attacks in Syria, Harvey Weinstein. Thinking a dude is stupid for taking a picture with a gun and making a joke about it is stupid is not outrage.
The boogie man of "faux-outrage" is mainly just a useful dig when others have opinions different than yours and express them.

Well I guess you are now the official arbiter of who is outraged or reacts with an uproar. We should all maybe check with you before we decide if people are outraged or just have an opinion, so we don't confuse the authorities that something we posted uses the word outrage or uproar because the poster agrees or disagrees with the various opinions (this one has me really confused).
My use of the word uproar came from Giants beat writer Ryan Dunleavy whose tweet I saw about it - AFTER I already saw the tweet and noticed for some reason Jay Feely was trending on twitter.
I don't know this for a fact, but I'm guessing based on his profession, he leans left politically, the same way people who may potentially act uproarious (if you allow the use of the word) to such content. So try again omniscient one.

Age-old joke? Or crossing a line in today's climate? Ex #Giants, #Jets kicker Jay Feely poses holding gun with his daughter and prom date. It caused an uproar: http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2018/04/jay_feely_poses_holding_gun_with_daughter_prom_dat.html #nyg #nyg #nygiants #nyjets
And in his article he cited many of the tweets that he felt counted as an uproar.
and again the guy (Feely) is trending on twitter, so the response might not be as insignificant as you may like to believe and the use of uproar from what I know was not intended as a "useful dig" to belittle anyone whose opinion differs.
simply tweeting something and having an opinion isnt outrage, no different than me and whoever else called him an idiot for it. People are calling him out for something they think was stupid, really not a big deal. If they start showing up at his house for a gun control protest, that would be outrage.
RE: I guess Jay Feely wanted to make a joke about fathers...
if the word uproar isn't to your liking, then maybe you can try a synonym, when the guy is trending on twitter because so many people commented on his tweet it qualifies as "something" I'll let the vocabularily superior to me fill in the word.
I am fine with uproar, especially since I got it from someone else's tweet. If you prefer outcry or furor, fuss or reaction then in your mind replace the word uproar with any one of them. I'm totally fine with replacing the word uproar and not changing anything.
the definition of uproar for your reference, I'm not married to word and largely find the actual word used to describe the reaction irrelevant. Not nefarious as Christian suggested and Uconn seconds.
a loud and impassioned noise or disturbance.
"the room was in an uproar"

"the uproar in the kitchen continued for some time"
antonyms: calm
a public expression of protest or outrage.
"it caused an uproar in the press"

usually its a word used to over embellish whats actually going on.
Back to Feely, hes a moron.
Whys he a moron? Because you somehow relate him holding a handgun in a obviously joking manner in a picture with his daughter and her date mass shootings? Jeezus man. Get ahold of yourself. It is you that is the moron for taking this entire thing way too seriously.
pjacs - my bad, I wasn't even really referring to the thread starter. My comment was aimed at TLG's take about outrage.
Outraged is a pretty high bar. I really do think some use that word in place of something more accurate or descriptive when it doesn't align with their view.
Uproar is probably a more fair way to describe it actually.

My fault, I didn't even see the outrage mentioned.

That's TLG's routine. He likes to position things in the extreme so he can generate conversation and garner attention. He's a sad soul - leave him alone.

Wow....two straight posts to call me out by you in one night?
Must be 2 for 1 Douche stalker comment night on BBI.
The thing is that he has enough "fuck you money" to not give a shit what you or anyone else thinks. It is a beautiful thing to be in that situation.
Not sure if you are projecting here - but if this were true Feely would not be the 'goose' sideline guy on FOX sundays and he wouldn't have issued an apology given the recent criticism.
So ... this post completely missed the mark. And this coming from someone not offended by the photo

Only with BBI morons would the person WITHOUT the gun be labeled an internet "tough guy".
Getting your panties in a wad works better for me- "to get all upset over something trivial, as if one's underwear has rolled up into an uncomfortable ball between one's butt cheeks"
...being protective of their daughters with a none-too-subtle warning to her prom date.
On the one hand, it's kinda funny. I get it.
On the other hand, it's also in poor taste, not too mention a little fucked given how many Americans are killed by g
Not fucking funny at all.
Love ya MS. But you dont know HOW the fuck You feel about this, DO you? lol
Beezer... off topic here... are you the guy from upstate NY who I met in the computer room at the Holiday Inn Express up in Albany, maybe the last year the Giants trained up there? If so, how you doin' buddy? Hope all's well.

Can't someone just be normally, flippantly, casually, momentarily critical of something?
Is it outrage at a four way stop and someone waves you ahead and let's their foot off the break at the same time, or when there's just a little bit of crushed up pretzel on the only open seat on the subway?
Must we either be silent or outraged? Can't we just be averagely, unoutrageosly upset!

Blame the OP. The precedent was set when he said it caused an uproar. Generally, uproars do not occur without outrage.
Is someone makes a comment in general about people being outraged, that doesnt necessarily point to you. Apparently there is outrage. Whether or not you fall into that category is entirely for you to decide, but that also has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not something exists.

Holy shit, this again.
I got the word uproar from NY Giants beat writer Ryan Dunleavy's tweet. And sure, when one person disagrees with someone or something and moves on it doesn't register, but when the picture goes viral and literally thousands of people stop to voice their displeasure and cause Jay Feely to be trending on twitter forcing him to issue an apology I think I'm ok with the use of the word uproar.
but again, for the pedantic among us who can't focus on their day to day life tasks while that word (uproar) is in this thread I re-post this sentence below - so pick a different word (fuss?) and maybe you can get past it, if not, keep causing an uproar:

All good. I don't know where you stated the second part but honestly, I'm not reading through two pages of stupidity to find it. And I didn't mean that he should literally blame you, my point was just that the tone of a thread is often set by the OP...so if there's any question as to why people are using that term, its probably the connotation that comes with a word like "uproar."
I don't have anything to get past. I was just responding to someone who was clearly having issues getting past something. So lets get past this?
Someone once was showing off their gun to my niece trying to look tough....the gun went off and she died. Its not political for me, its personal. Every time I see someone cavalierly display their gun to try to look tough it hurts. The gun culture in this country is just fucked up. Jay Feeley is a douche.
damn, thats awful. Hate hearing about stuff like that.
As I said in my previous posts, as a gun owner you have a duty to take it seriously by acting responsibly. This was very poor judgement to get some social media likes. Pretty embarrassing.
I own a gun. Id never brandish it like this in front of my daughter, let alone take a picture of it and post it.
Anyone who was raised in a responsible household where good
judgement was exercised in regard to guns, should have a problem with the picture.
I was shooting by the age of 7, hunted small game in middle school and still hunt to this day. Guns are not toys, or props for goofy pictures.
Outraged, upset, steamed, I don't know, but identifying poor judgement, yes.
Many hunter take pictures with their guns alongside the animal harvested. Deer, turkey, etc.
I think the joke was dumb and I personally don't like handguns. But the gun wasn't loaded and if he wanted to attempt a funny picture with his daughter for her special occasion I really don't see the great harm.
If he was horsing around with a loaded weapon I would wholeheartedly agree.
Saw this thread yesterday but forgot to comment til now...
Personally I think it's stupid... but that's because I think the 'joke' is tired at this point.
I think someone else brought up a good point that was the first thing that came across my mind... especially as the father of two boys myself now.... is I wonder how the parent of the young man felt? I believe Feely said the two kids had been dating for about a year and so I'm guessing the parents may know each other... and perhaps in that case the kid's parents didn't have a problem with it... but all I can say is that if that picture was up there and that was MY boy in it... Feely's got a problem.
What would've been funny to me is if the kid had a handgun himself flashed behind his back in the photo.
Joking or not... I wouldn't like seeing my kid in a picture like that. I get the joke and all... but I don't think I'd find it funny if that was my kid. Wonder how Feely would feel if the young man's father took a picture with Feely's daughter and his son with a box of condoms? Or a gun?
Feel the need to say... I'm not 'outraged' or nothing about it... it's not a big deal to me in the sense that it's clearly a joke. Just not one I find particularly funny.
I'm just tired of seeing things get blown out of proportion because people don't think about intent. They basically make up intent to support a faux outrage.
It's pretty clear the majority of time to know what the intent is, but people either ignore it or blurt out the first thing that comes to their mind as a reaction.
is people doing stupid things for likes. I get what you are saying, but this really was a stupid decision for Feely. I get it was a joke, and harmless if unloaded (we have to take his word for that since we cant see the butt of be gun or whats chambered), but whats its worth? At the very best he embarassed his family, he avoided the very worst, thankfully.
I expect this stuff on Barstool sports, where its all stupid nonsense, 1 mistake away from killing someone. Social media brings out the worst in much of society.
I ask this sincerely, mainly because I participate in almost no social media, and none where opinions are traded.
What constitutes outrage vs. just an opinion? When I hear "faux-outrage" it seems tantamount to "you are over reacting and there's no way you really feel that way." Seems myopic and controlling.
If someone is getting embroiled in a topic, spending hours or something battling(say me getting my shit all stirred arguing with Britt about Eli Manning), that seems to fit the bill. That is some for sure faux outrage.
If somebody on Twitter, or a newspaper writer, or on BBI makes a flippant comment or thinks an action is not real smart, is dangerous, or not funny, I just don't see that as being anywhere near outraged. I'm sure there is someone, somewhere making a stink over that picture who doesn't actually care, but I don't see the world at large that upset.
I think there likely is a very small minority of people who are legitimately "outraged" over the joke.
That being said, I do agree that the country is in desperate need of a culture change - where semi automatic firearms aren't treated so cavalierly. It starts with the small things.
Once we get a handle on our gun violence issue then maybe the gag photos with daddy threatening his baby girl's prom date with the pistol will be accepted a little more readily.
It's a joke. A joke made of being an overprotective dad and saying "keep your hands off my daughter". Obviously the kid had a sense of humor and by the grin on his face, he did not mind at all and took the picture and went on with his day. Keep up the good work.
Back in Halloween 2005 or so, the ex-girlfriend and I posed with a knife where the Scream killer was gonna stab her as a helpless nurse. When we took the picture, a real knife was held up above her chest (like how Drew Barrymore was killed in the movie), but the knife didn't even close. We were careful and she obviously did not mind but when it was brought up or the picture got around, her mom was so offended by it and my girlfriend didn't want to do the same picture the next year. (Only because she did not want to hear the same reaction from her mom). Same kind of joke...get it. "Ya wanna kill your wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend".
Everyone matters. I love every single person on this thread. I hope you all stay clean and out of trouble. And Feely can kiss my ass for missing those 3 FGs in Seattle in 2005.
when something makes the mainstream media it passes the test for faux outrage:
Quote:

I often see the argument about things just being a dissentive opinion, but when this picture is like the 4th story on the Today Show and there is a debate on whether or not it is appropriate, faux outrage is likely a fitting term. And it certainly does mean that people are overreacting, especially when there have been calls for Feely to have some sort of punishment.

And it certainly does mean that people are overreacting, especially when there have been calls for Feely to have some sort of punishment.
I recognize that it garnered attention. I just watched the Today show clip and that coverage appeared balanced and they polled their audience -- the majority said it was a joke in good fun.
There were quotes of people who didn't think it was funny or in good taste.
I guess I just don't see a debate on whether it's appropriate as outrageous. If he got fired, or there was a protest in front of his house etc. I could see that as feigning outrage. That would seem extreme and I'd question if the reaction was genuine and warranted.
It's a fascinating topic -- again maybe because I'm not super-plugged into social media or other channels where I hear a lot of opinions, but I hear the term "outrage" now and again and don't see it in the reactions always.
Not doubting it happens -- hyperbole to help confirm beliefs is as old as mankind.

The prom picture I posted was obviously intended to be a joke. My Daughter has dated her boyfriend for over a year and they knew I was joking.
I take gun safety seriously (the gun was not loaded and had no clip in) and I did not intend to be insensitive to that important issue
LOL..
Definitely portrays a lack of common sense and taste. That includes the gun and the belt. Wouldn't be surprised of there were white shoes as well.
Oy vey...
Oy vey...
Guns are not a joke and a responsible gun owner would never brandish one without a real reason. Look at the number of Americans accidentally killed by guns every year. Casually waving a gun around is never a smart idea.

THis just in, people react differently to things, more details at 11.
Wow, I had no idea! Thanks for filling me in, bud.

Oh FFS. Thats quite a leap there.
To me its not even the getting mad or complaining I get mad at some things and laugh at others. Its the ones stomping their feet creating a huge uproar until everyone agrees with them like a spoiled 16 year old girl ( yes dont care if that offends anyone). And it gets worse and worse with every generation

Everybody is sensitive, unless it follows your agenda like what Kathy Griffith did..then "it's a joke...get some humor".
Snowflakes when convenient.
And by "dumb" I think you guys are assuming that Jay Feely didn't know or actually cared that a bunch sensitive weenies were going to be outraged by a picture taken clearly in jest on his Instagram.
LOL
Some dad's even show it for show, just to make them both think twice.
Sheesh, talk about sensitive whimppy winey people.
That's just my opinion.
I think guys wearing chains with gold AK pendants on them, or tattoos of guns, or skulls & bullseyes and AR15 silhouettes all over their t-shirts & automobiles all look like boners.
Its a golf outfit. Travis Mathew hat and golf shirt. You match the belt to the golf shoes. Id bet the mortgage hes wearing white golf shoes.
His outfit looks good, honestly.

actually thats why there was backlash and why he apologized.
It might have been one of the reasons there was a backlash - but doesn't make it a reasonable thing to get upset about. And he apologized because he's not just a retired kicker - he has a job in the media and doesn't want to lose it over this dumb shit. So he apologized.

to go through our lives and never be offended?

Actually not true. Studies show that Generation Z is trending hard back to a centrist position, maybe even a tick right, likely as a result of the way over the top millennial attitude of self-righteousness and psuedo-outrage over everything.

Even if it is overstated.

Outraged is a pretty high bar. I really do think some use that word in place of something more accurate or descriptive when it doesn't align with their view.
Uproar is probably a more fair way to describe it actually.

As I said in my previous posts, as a gun owner you have a duty to take it seriously by acting responsibly. This was very poor judgement to get some social media likes. Pretty embarrassing.
I own a gun. Id never brandish it like this in front of my daughter, let alone take a picture of it and post it.
I was shooting by the age of 7, hunted small game in middle school and still hunt to this day. Guns are not toys, or props for goofy pictures.
Outraged, upset, steamed, I don't know, but identifying poor judgement, yes.
If people can't learn to separate intent from their outrage, there's going to be continued faux outrage for years to come.
It really in an unfortunate part of social media.
I expect this stuff on Barstool sports, where its all stupid nonsense, 1 mistake away from killing someone. Social media brings out the worst in much of society.
Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
I often see the argument about things just being a dissentive opinion, but when this picture is like the 4th story on the Today Show and there is a debate on whether or not it is appropriate, faux outrage is likely a fitting term.
