NFT: Berman: Budenholzer would say yes to Knicks

bceagle05 : 4/22/2018 10:17 pm
Interesting little development here. It appears Coach Bud is more interested in the Knicks than many thought.

Quote:
Mike Budenholzer is genuinely interested in the Knicks’ job, according to an NBA source who has spoken to the Hawks coach.

“New York’s his top choice,’’ the NBA source said. “If they offered him the job, he’d say yes. He wants to live in New York.’’

Moreover, Budenholzer appears so disillusioned with the current Hawks’ philosophy, it’s difficult to imagine him returning. Atlanta is adopting the blueprint set by the “Trust The Process’’ Sixers. Budenholzer was the top decision-maker on personnel until last summer when Travis Schlenk was named general manager. Now the 48-year-old, the 2015 Coach of the Year, has no power regarding personnel.

If true, he has to be at or near the top of the list.

Everybody wants to come here

until they get in the building and see how it works.
Is Dolan still seen as a negative regarding coming to NYK?
jnoble : 4/22/2018 10:36 pm : link
Because he's not afraid to spend money but hasn't been involved with much since Phil Jackson and seems more interested in his music "career" at this point
What coach wouldn't want to work for maybe 2 years
robbieballs2003 : 4/22/2018 10:41 pm : link
but get paid for 5?
Real or imagined, there is still a stigma surrounding the Knicks
bceagle05 : 4/22/2018 10:53 pm : link
and Dolan is a big part of it.

On paper, this isn't as bad a job as people think - KP and some other decent young pieces, a top 10 pick, a full slate of picks going forward, and cap space next summer.
Dolans Knicks have historically
steve in ky : 4/22/2018 11:04 pm : link
paid their coaches pretty well. I don't recall too many turning down the job if offered a chance at it.
How is it about mkney?
nygiants16 : 4/23/2018 7:26 am : link
money? Gets 7 million a year for the next 2 years from atlanta..

And yes dolan is a jackass, but from a coaches standpoint who wouldn't want to work for a guy who would give them and spend anything they wanted..
Why would he think he gets power over personnel here?
Heisenberg : 4/23/2018 7:31 am : link
Good coach, though. Nice work by the agent getting it in the paper, too.
Open that wallet Jimmy!

Perry and mills have said they want a joint effort with coach, so maybe they promised him say

unique situation that the Knicks have a chance to take advantage of. Lets see if they can get it done.
It's a pretty good fit.
Heisenberg : 4/23/2018 8:41 am : link
Would be happy as long as the compensation is only Dolan's money
so many

good coaches to choose from. Mills can't possibly fuck this up!

THIS. Also, working for Dolan is a total cover. When the Knicks inevitably stink, people will blame it on the building, and not you. You'd get a new job in no time.
Plenty of coaches have gotten paid by the knicks,
Keith : 4/23/2018 9:52 am : link
but they leave in a much worse situation. Hornacek now has a .300 record attached to his name. D'Antoni, Woodson, Brown...how many guys came to the knicks and then left with a worse reputation? I'm thinking all of them.

D'Antoni got the Lakers job over Phil and then a 4th HC job in Houston. I don't think he was tarnished much if at all. Maybe amongst Knicks fans. JVG also left unscathed.

The expectations are also so low. If someone comes in here and takes the Knicks to the 2nd round, they will be treated like a King. I’m expecting a banner for the 2013 54 win team any day now.

Bud would be a homerun hire. Can Dolan just send ATL 10 million and call it a day? Is Bud going to be okay with having a down year next year? Because the best path is for the Knicks to unload some vets, be patient and limited with KP next year and get a top 5 pick next year.
Any new coach should be given a very long leash..
Sean : 4/23/2018 10:38 am : link
look at the Sixers. NYK needs to exercise patience.
if Bud really
Enzo : 4/23/2018 10:40 am : link
wants to "win"...then I'm thinking he ends up in Milwaukee.
This really is a golden opportunity.
bceagle05 : 4/23/2018 10:43 am : link
Bud's strong with schemes/in-game strategy AND player development - most coaches are strong at one or the other. He won 60 games in Atlanta with a team whose best player was Al Horford, he was with Poppovich forever, embraces analytics, and is a young man right in the prime of his coaching career.

Stackhouse is an intriguing up-and-comer, and Blatt and Fizdale are fine candidates, but Budenholzer looks like the cream of the crop right now.
Berman's source says he wants to live in New York
bceagle05 : 4/23/2018 10:52 am : link
and wants out of Atlanta because they're embarking on a multiple-season, Philly-style "Trust the Process." The Knicks are at least trying to win. Bud was linked to Phoenix and supposedly pulled himself out of the running there - makes you wonder what happened there.
I could very well see

Why Phoenix isn’t an attractive coaching job.

The basketball gods have been punishing the Knicks ever since the Ewing lottery. Knicks will probably end up picking 10th.
Thankfully I didn't get too caught up in the lottery race this year.
bceagle05 : 4/23/2018 11:19 am : link
We'll get a good player. Miles/Mikal Bridges, Wendell Carter, Sexton, SGA - any one of them would help us.
I don't see this guy as a Knicks coach either
ghost718 : 4/23/2018 11:24 am : link
Rather see Stackhouse or Monty Williams
Not a shot in hell of them winning that lottery, lol.
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/23/2018 11:26 am : link
They'll find a way to get the absolute worst pick slot possible
Phoenix
TyreeHelmet : 4/23/2018 11:51 am : link
He definitely passed on that job because of the money and contract offered. Their owner Sarver makes Dolan look like Red Auerbach. He’s cheap and loves to be involved. What a huge miss for them too. Bud is from Arizona.

Milwaukee does have the best roster. I doubt they spend big on a coach and you also have to live in Milwaukee....
