Here's an interesting article from the Times about a writer's trip to Islay.
In praise of single malts - ( New Window )
I believe you mean "Whisky"

I Love Clams Casino : 4/23/2018 10:43 am : link
but when I did, the cheaper the scotch, the better I liked it....I was a fan of Grants....cheapest stuff on the shelf...I guess I just didn't know what was good
Scotch whisky columns always enjoyable

(I) I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
And die behind the wheel

One thing to note if you're going on a tour of Islay

the golden mile is more like 2.5 miles (Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg) are walkable from each other and they'll ply you with enough that driving is not advisable. Bunnahabhain is a good 25 miles or so away from the south of the island (although Ardnahoe and Caol Ile are right next to it). I'd recommend a pre-booked tour package of a number of them. I did once cycle to a few tastings which got messy.

Port Charlotte is nice to stay although further east, Port Ellen is the largest town but I'm not sure I'd stay there.
My father only drank single malt scotch

12 years old or more

Glenlivet was his regular go to brand, but he had some reserves that would put it to shame.
Clearly prejudiced against Highlands, Lowlands and Speyside.

I prefer my scotch smokey, honeyed but unpeated. Hard to find that in Islay.
I've never had a problem with Johnny Black on the rocks

Glenmorangie is right there with the real expensive single malts IMHO
I guess that's true if you are pouring over ice.

The youngest Glenmorangie tastes too green and fruity for me. Good lower cost brands: Ancnoc 12, Abelour 12, Bunnahabhaim 12, Old Pultney 12, Balvenie Double Wood 12.
Dalmore is good for a cheaper one.

Have a 16 year Lagavulin. A 12,16,18 sampler of Glenlivet from Costco and the standard Glenmorangie.

Never drink though, i'd give em away if someone really wanted them.
