We don't discuss this position as much as others here but we don't have a #2 receiver who plays opposite OBJ. If we were a good team we would all discussing the wide receivers in this draft because we desperately need at least one. Are we really going to sign Dez or are we going to draft one high? I find the eventual answer to this to be pretty intriguing.

It’s a need for sure. Dez just makes too much sense. Big position WR opposite Odell. Likely after the draft
If you look at the roster, there are some receivers who I am surprised are still here. Obviously this can change quickly in camp, but I thought some of these guys would already be let go as they were late-season street pick-ups.

does anybody think that waiving Powe means we're signing Bryant?
It's not an indicator for me, but you can't argue that there isn't a need to find a better option for the #2 WR spot. I think right now we have Roger Lewis manning that spot, and the draft isn't especially rich in WR talent.
I agree. We are about 2 weeks away from a rookie tryout following the draft and UDFA signings. We will be seeing a number of player changes at the bottom portion of the roster.
Is a different player (attitude wise) than he was a couple of seasons ago. Maybe maturity, or the desire to take a smaller role to win. I see Dez as a big improvement over Marshall and a nice complement to Beckham... perfect fit, no. A good fit, definitely.
opposite Beckham isn't nearly as important in Shurmur's offense than it was in McAdoo's or Gilbride's for that matter. He runs a lot of 12 personnel sets with 2 WR's and 2 TE's. Engram will moving all over the field.
The Vikings top 2 receivers were Diggs and Thielan. Third was Rudolph and fourth was McKinnon. Thielan and Diggs both played in the slot and outside. The other outside receiver was Treadwell who had 35 targets for 200 yards. Not exactly a big part of what they were doing.
mmmm, i am sorry but it seems like everything is signaling towards a dez signing. Now with baltimore out of the running, his cost probably just got lower considering there dont seem to be other teams banging the door down. If he comes cheap he would prob be a good signing.
between cutting marshal and powe, it just seems so obvious the giants need a bigger body WR....
If dez can keep his head on straight and OBJ can follow suit, we will have one scary offense
Has spent the off-season getting rid of malcontents and bringing in high character guys and you think he will bring in dez?!?!? That is just hilarious
Hell, dez could offer to pay the giants to be on the team and they still wouldn't take him. I Don't Know why some people get enamored with a name and that's all he is...a name
and a draft pick they will find the guy. I agree that although depth is important, there is enough there with OBJ, Shephard and Engram. Only so many targets.
These decisions get made for reasons we fans have no idea about. They know who's bad in the locker room, who's skipping workouts, who doesn't seem motivated, who's drinking or on drugs.
BUT: Sometimes those reasons are bullshit, because sometimes the stuff they "know" is wrong.
(Once interviewed Jamie Williams about "Any Given Sunday." Williams was a 3rd round pick in '83. He was cut, I think at the end of camp. As others have noted on BBI, Williams wasn't really Parcells' kind of TE, but he was a 3rd-round pick, so clearly they had plans for him. IIRC he, Zeke Mowatt and Malcolm Scott were rookies that year, and Williams was the odd man out.
Williams told me the team knew one of the TEs was on drugs, they thought it was him, so they cut him. It wasn't him. He went on to have a nice career as a receiving TE. Mowatt was a surprise find for the Giants and also had a nice career, though shortened by injuries. Scott, well, he didn't have a nice career, wasn't "nice" at all.
So again: These decisions often get made for reasons we fans have no idea about, and sometimes those reasons are bullshit.)

4/5ths of that line does not inspire confidence. Outside of Solder we're looking at Jerry-level player in Omameh, Richburg's backup, rookie, and UDFA backup tackle.
He was only on the team last year because we scraped the bottom of the barrel....and he played like something you would scrape from the bottom of the barrel....
And yes we do need a #2 wr.....
We have no idea what physical condition OBj is in?
Last year, SS did not improve on his rookie season....will he this year?
EE showed potential last season....he ran too many short crossing patterns, probably because Eli did not have the time.....has he corrected his propensity for dropping balls?
There are question marks with our receivers......and who do we have backing them up? Nothing.....
So yes, a #2 WR is needed......the thought of throwing something like a Powe/Lewis/Randolph(well, don't have to worry about Powe) out there is flat out scary.....
Have to hope some team has cap problems and cuts some talent, or we get lucky in the draft.......

LOL "richburgs backup" richburg is garbage. jones played fine once he got his shot, alot of people started as backups and now are starters. a guy like hernandez can come in and play and probably play well right away. wheeler looked pretty good last year.
look around the league, OL play is down, you wont have a dallas cowboys OL in one offseason....

I know that. But just as they've trimmed some guys from the roster (not just high contract guys), I thought WR was top heavy in numbers right now and with guys who really don't have a shot. I thought we'd see other guys get cut before Darius Powe for example.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I think on paper that line looks like shit, possibly worse than last year. A lot of people do start as backups, but when those people are backups to maybe the worst line in football, it does not inspire confidence. Could Wheeler and Jones improve dramatically and a rookie lineman come in and be good enough to start right away? Sure. But that sounds like another year of wishing and hoping the sum of the line is better than its parts.
I'm not Solder's biggest fan, but he's a legitimate NFL LT and adding him alone makes this line better than last year's. How much better remains to be seen, but not seeing how it would possibly be worse.
The thing I loved about Powe was how he continued to play hurt. I believe the game he broke his foot he just kept playing.
You don't see that often.
I thought he earned the right to come to camp and compete, and definitely ahead of some of the other WR on the roster, but that's also because I don't know those players and Powe left a favorable impression.
Have taken a very slow motion path to rebuilding this team could be more to this than we know. I'm still waiting on all of these JAG's to be released to many 25/26 year old players with little or no NFL game experience. We may have 76 players on the roster but 48 plus or more of them could get walking papers today without a passing moment of silence being noted for them.
It's not the end of the world, but IMHO Powe outplayed Lewis Â

Good point.
I believe the Giants have some expectations for Latimer Â
He is an X factor. He's big and physical. It's noce to see a football player out there behind O'dell and Shep. They had too much PROVEN Dead Wood at WR.
The Team is THIN..... I'm hoping that begins to change on Thursday night
I think it will be Dez. Makes too much sense.

But we are going to have to sign a WR eventually or draft one in the first three rounds, right?

This is a good draft to pick a receiver in the middle rounds. There's no star that apparent. Some guys with good potential though.
No doubt there would be risk with him coming on board, but if he is on decent behavior it would be a plus for the offense.
Another offseason signing by DG.

It was actually to clear a roster spot for Dixon.
You'd need another move to sign Dez.

Lewis was retained because of his special teams play (i.e. Gunner on punt coverage).
As Eric says, I would have preferred to let him compete in camp, but have to trust the new coaches.
You wanna spend a top 3 round pick on the 5th or 6th receiving option??
Are you Jerry Reese?
