Best players never named all-stars (football, baseball)?

Beezer : 4/23/2018 3:37 pm
Looked at the thread saying if a player's not an All-Pro within 3 years, they're a bust.

Looking at it from the opposite side ...

1. Best NFL player to ever play who was never named All-Pro?

2. Best MLB player to ever play who was never named an All-Star? (Pitcher or everyday player.)

Baseball. I think he won MVP yet never made allnstar game.
All-Pro or All-Star?

Tiki was an All-Star, but never an All-Pro. I think.
Confusing question
figgy2989 : 4/23/2018 3:45 pm : link
All-Pro for football is a lot tougher then Pro Bowl (which is a popularity contest and now doesnt include participants who are in The Super Bowl)

Eli has never been an All-Pro
Yeah, forgot about the All-Pro/Pro Bowl thing.

Remind me of the difference? I mean, as far as how they get selected? Is one fan votes and the other peers or coaches?
Man there are a lot of people who could fit into the All-Pro category.

Big Ben has never been an All-Pro either
Kirk Gibson was never an All-Star?

That's really bizarre.
Part of the All-Pro confusion is there are multiple All-Pro teams
Greg from LI : 4/23/2018 3:53 pm : link
Generally, the AP team is the most widely used when referring to someone as "All-Pro", but the Sporting News names a team, the PFWA has one, PFF has one, UPI used to have one,
AP All-Pro

Is the best individual honor an NFL player can receive for one season.

The Pro Bowl is useless.

3 time Selke winner (best defensive forward) - and 6 more times in the top 5 for Selke voting and 3 time Stanley Cup winner, team captain for 5 years (for all the cups I think).

never made an all-star game.
For example

If you go to Harry Carson's Pro Football Reference page, he's not listed as an All-Pro because he never was first-team on the AP's All-Pro team. However, he was a first team All-Pro for the Sporting News in 1984 and PFW in 1981.
Keith Hamilton never even made a Pro Bowl

That's pretty mind-boggling.
well that and

The fifth alternate becomes a starter on the Pro Bowl team because no one else wanted to play, but now received Pro Bowl honors.

Just going by at his stats he was only a good player for 5 years. And never all that great. His MVP looks dubious in hindsight.
Mark Collins is the best player I can think of....

While Gibson

is technically true, I'm pretty sure he turned down the ASG once or twice due to injury.

There's another question: If they were voted in, or named as a backup, and they turned it down due to injury, do they still get the "all-star" status in their permanent baseball record?
Never all that great?
Greg from LI : 4/23/2018 4:07 pm : link
Jeez, man, how high are your standards? Gibson was an excellent all-around player from 1984-88. Injuries took their toll at that point, but in his prime years he was great. Good OBP, good power, good speed.

Looked it up and you're right - Gibson was named as an AS in 1985 and 1988 but declined both times.
Looking at Gibson's career just now,
Beezer : 4/23/2018 4:10 pm : link
I think I'd categorize him a bit under the "great" line. More in the "very good" range for some years, with an iconic, insanely great moment.

Yeah, it's weird, to me at least, that Gibson isn't listed as an all-star the years he turned it down. I guess he wasn't voted in, but was instead invited by the manager, and since he turned it down it was never "official". Still though, by a reasonable definition of all-star, he qualified those years.
This thread reminds me of the

Kirk Gibson, who got caught trying to steal first base, never got a dinner!

This guy could play anywhere.

For a more personal note: Mookie Wilson.

Football much harder to grade due to their whacky use of pro bowl this and all pro that.
Maybe Steve Deberg.
