NFT: Mike Francesa wants to come back to NY radio.

Ace718 : 4/23/2018 4:02 pm
Marchand has the story in the Post and there is a lot of chatter on social media. Seems like Francesa is missing being on the air talking sports and is trying to find a way back on the radio. Even a return to WFAN hasn't been ruled out.

Im not even a Mike guy but he would deserve to walk in there that way. That radio station is a clown show. Chernoff has never had to work so hard to run a station and its evident hes useless and has no ideas.

Id like to see a 3hr show.

Ive listened to the new show only a handful of times. I really dont think its done well. However its early still. They need a full football season.

Evan is very good. I always thought hed get the time slot at some point.

New show has its ups and downs, Maggie is OK, Bart Scott can be funny and knows football but Carlin is a total asshole.

away from one of the great gigs in all of sports media. I recall him in an interview (may have been with Simmons) where he alluded to how he cracked the code to making big money via podcasts or whatever...but he wouldn't reveal it and it would somehow play a part in his next venture. My guess is that the guys at CAA finally set him straight.

Not sure that's the case. Could have been about money. If he gets a 4+ month vacation + much more money to come back, doesn't he win in the end?

Doubtful. He could have named his price, gotten a reduced schedule, and whatever else he wanted from WFAN. But he thought the grass was going to be greener somewhere else.

Unless the lawyers were crafty in writing the contracts from CMB, they are going to be out a lot of dough if he Returns to afternoon drive (in any capacity)

For a station that is not doing well financially, unsure how this would work. Believe me, I want to see big Mike back, but if this puts them in an even further hole, does it make sense?

Also doubtful. There were feelings attached to this and he's alluded to being pushed out. Could be blowhard Francesa, but I'm guessing there is some truth to it.

People changing their minds doesn't always mean they failed to find what they wanted elsewhere. He has a huge ego and its quite possible people were tired of it. Now ratings are dropping and all can be made right if both sides give in, happens all the time.

where he did he mention being pushed out? If he was being pushed out, why did he consider staying after the Carton fiasco?

A direct quote from Mike: "This is for those who started this campaign in recent days." That is obviously different from being "pushed out" last year as you mentioned. It's nice you have an opinion - but those who cover this stuff for a living are saying the opposite.
I was a listener - and defender - of Mike's for a long time
bceagle05 : 4/24/2018 10:11 am : link
but he was horrible those last few years at WFAN. He'd deliver on a big story - Penn State, Eli benching, etc. - but day in and day out I couldn't stand him. If he's returning, he should do a limited schedule, or just the Sunday Football Show.

You can still interpret that either way. Mike might have to play nice right now, who knows. Something pushed him out, whether it was a contract dispute, butting heads, needing a break, exploring other options, etc. Classify that any way you want.

Considering the fact that Francesa was on the air for decades, apparently very hard.
Wow, that should be some work environment at the FAN.

I remember Mike and Dog destroying Marv Albert for taking the Nets play-by-play job later in his career, saying he didn't need it and he should let Ian Eagle (a FAN colleague) spread his wings a bit. I guess now that Mike's a little older he feels differently about such things.

That's a nice silver lining.
I think he left because of Carton mocking him
moespree : 4/24/2018 12:20 pm : link
Carton used to drop some hints that Mike was complaining to CBS radio that they weren't doing anything to stop Carton from mocking him. And then look how quick Mike changed his tune and started saying "I'll stay if they need me..." right after Carton got arrested and it became clear that Carton would no longer be on the station. Suddenly, Mike gets a change of heart and wants to stay. At some point CBS Radio changed leadership as well, and Mike even said before leaving that he likes the new people and has a good relationship with them. They are the ones that terminated Carton and I'm assuming have now brought him back.

That's it really. I think he left because he's an egomaniac who didn't like being made fun of and no one told them to stop. He didn't feel important or the big man on campus anymore and hurt his feelings. But Mike is going to get the last laugh here. He'll probably get the pay raise he was after, ride in as the savior he always wanted to be and I can't imagine the program director who he doesn't get along with either will keep his job.

I really enjoy the morning show. Gio is fine, but it's the rest of the cast that make it fun. I heard they had down ratings, but was it that bad?

CMB only lost to Kay by .2 points, so it wasn't that much of a landslide, but they're tough to listen too.

Down 2.5 ratings points - pretty big drop.

Quote:
WFAN also unveiled a new morning show for the winter, with Gregg Giannotti joining Boomer Esiason. That show finished seventh in the market in the target demographic with 5.1 percent of the audience.

That compares to 7.7 and first place overall in the fall, when Jerry Recco filled in after the arrest and eventual resignation of Craig Carton in early September.

arniefez : 4/24/2018 2:55 pm : link
The only reason he left was that his contract was up and they wouldn't pay him the same rate. The I'll stay since Carlin got arrested thing fell apart over money too. He must have agreed to take a lot less to come back. I never listen to the show that replaced him and hardly listen to FAN at all any more. My guess is that the people running the station have seen that all of their shows have lost ratings since he left. That doesn't surprise me at all. His leaving hurt Kay's ratings too. In NY sports radio Francesa was the straw that stirred the drink.
