I’m afraid Dom Smith is not
A little bit of a let down from Bautista

Maybe I’m the jinx but every single time I see him pitch, he looks very mehhh. Last night no exception, he really struggled.
Hopefully

Alonso isn't making too many errors on the field.

13 games 2 errors. Too early too judge either way.
Alonso
Shecky : 4/24/2018 9:45 am : link
He averages an error a week in his career. So 2 in 13 games in the field is exactly career pace. He was never a good fielder in his life so that will never happen no matter how hard he works. But he could be adequate.

But that bat though...
It's fine if
Metnut : 4/24/2018 9:48 am : link
he's "below average" in the field. It looks like the kid can flat out rake. Just need for him to be legit "below average" and not a joke out there.

That's what minor league seasoning is for. The good thing is that 1B isn't a position that defensive abilities tends to decline as a player gets old (like SS or CF) so we'd hope that the more reps/time he gets at 1B, he should be able to improve a little bit.
1B is where they send the non-fielding players
pjcas18 : 4/24/2018 9:50 am : link
so if you can't field 1B you're a DH.

Maybe try and package him in a Realmuto trade before he's exposed any further. If the bat is as good as people say maybe the Marlins care less than the Mets should.

Marlins have Justin Bour cheaply so why would they want Alonso as the prime piece in a trade?

Bour is 30 years old sub replacement level and arb eligible next year and averages around 100 games per season.

Alonso is 23 years old in AA, I don't know the two have much bearing on each other.

And I'm not sure Alonso is well regarded enough to be the centerpiece. Might need to be Gimenez.

it IS rumored the Marlins are high on Alonso and asked for him (as well as Gimenez and "more") in the off-season when they had their brief Realmuto talks. They also apparently asked about him in a deal for Starlin Castro.

Indirectly...
MeRandy with his Marjorie league debut for Marlins. For those anti Ramos fans

not anti-Ramos per se, I hated the trade from the second the Mets made it. I still don't understand why they made it. Merandy could get permanently banned from MLB for any reason or just flat out bust and I won't think that was a good trade.

the only reason I can think of for their making that trade is that the Mets expected the market to very high priced. It turns out the market for free agents went the other way, so the trade looks a lot worse than it otherwise might have.

I hated the trade at the time and still do. But there was some logic to it. also, Ramos was insurance in case Familia did not come back strong
Miscalculating the reliever
pjcas18 : 4/24/2018 3:46 pm : link
market isn't an excuse, but I agree it may be the reason for the trade.

Addison Reed may shit the bed, who knows, but he's making less this year than AJ Ramos and wouldn't have cost Merandy.

And Reed has more saves than Ramos in his career and is younger (not that it matters so much with relievers).
Shitty start to the day
