Had to investigate it.
A hispanic community that well, picks cotton. Their symbol is 2 cotton stems. They can't understand why anyone would think it offensive. They are proud of the fact. Interestingly enough, a minority community that is proud of themselves. School looks like it's a good one academically. 13 to 1 student/teacher ratio. Link - ( New Window )
Thank you ctc.
I personally don't have an issue with that name considering what or who they are referring to. They have a reason to be proud of that name... most black folks though, probably wouldn't. There's a difference there.
at a major school for a semester, you will learn racists are still prominent and aren't separated by socioeconomic background, intelligence levels, or, even in fact, RACE itself.

That is correct, it is either 2 cotton stems or just one cotton stem with a big red R in the middle (which is the one mostly decorating their school fences, sports fields and most of the logos for the school.

I am so glad I have taught my kids to be very cautious what they post Â
But here, I don't even understand how that is supposed to be funny.
I am a big believer in human nature never changing, ever. Certain things may be more or less acceptable to say out loud, but I don't think people privately think in much less of a racially conscious way than they did 50 or 60 years ago. And that goes for all people of all races and backgrounds. And I don't think it will ever change, either.

RE: RE: I think people are also desensitized to the word racist more now Â
I don't think you're wrong and actually agree 100%. The word and claim gets thrown around waaaay too quickly and easily nowadays.
Indeed. When everything is racist, nothing is racist and the word loses much of its meaning and impact. Which, of course, benefits the actual honest-to-God racists.
Incidentally, the talk of high school mascots brings two semi-related things to mind:
-There's a high school in Arizona whose teams are the Redskins, and the school's student body is almost 100% Navajo children. Red Mesa High School
-Not really here or there, but it's always made me laugh: Yuma High School, also in Arizona, calls its teams the Criminals

That include “if I offended anyone”. You’re better off not apologizing. You offended everyone with that sign
I know right... I'd rather you just stick to your guns and say 'Fuck it... I said it so I must've meant it.'. While writing that sign out I'm sure he wasn't confused as to whether anyone who saw it would find it offensive or not.
Thinking about it some more though... it reminds me of something I saw on social media somewhere recently that says something like 'I don't care about the person that talked behind my back to you... I want to know why they felt comfortable talking behind my back to you?'... or something like that. I'd like to know why that kid thought sending the young lady he was asking out to the prom would go over well? That is... if it didn't. If it did... well... there's my answer I suppose.

So... like I said, apparently she appears to share his attitude towards black folks. Can't say I'm shocked. I would've figured the kid had some HUGE balls to send something like that to someone without knowing how they'd react.
nowadays that goes onto the Internet and it'll be the first thing that comes up on web searches for his name for, well, probably forever.
The First Amendment protects his right to be an asshole. But it doesn't protect him from consequences for being an asshole, and he's probably going to feeling that blowback for years to come. A lot of people won't date him. Or hire him. Or have him for a roommate. Or patronize businesses where he works.
Well, we want to punish him for the sickening sign he made, right? Not rewarding him by preventing him from working and giving him all day to spend at home, or taking a girl out to see overpriced reboot movies. Hell, she said yes to the ridiculous sign, didn't she?
If you think because he made a racist comment, he is black listed from any work, think again. He could just always change his name.
If you rattled this kid's name off the top of your head in 5 years, or even one year from now, I highly doubt anyone will remember what it is linked to unless you personally care about it so much. He could just offer a contrived "I'm sorry" and we're on our way because we've moved on to the next hot topic. There is no real relevance behind finding a date anymore and a racist sign at 18.

Not sure what companies you apply to but yes, that'd DQ me from any company I ever applied to (and Google doesn't forget).
Kid's fucked and rightfully so. You think employers don't google applicants? Think again
Sonic, again, he could just have his name legally changed and work around that issue if he really wanted to. This little incident shouldn't now justify giving him a single thought in his head he will struggle to find work during the course of his life. It will just deter him from thinking he has a chance to find anything and will just give up and lay around all day in his parents house until he is 42. Sounds like a win for me.
Make him suffer with the rest of us by having him become a part of the working class and move on. It's not the first incident where something like this has been posted online, someone makes a truly racist costume every single time Halloween comes around and it is the same thing. I barely remember the incident let alone remember the person's name or face. It is way too common.
Besides if he was dumb enough to think of a dumb racist idea such as that was fine, and then on top of, he is stupid enough to send it through social media where everyone can see it? He might not even be wise enough in the first place to land a job worthy enough to have his "career" ruined. He just sounds like a racist waste who wouldn't go anywhere in life anyway.
Me? I have a job and I will be there for 8 years next month. I am not going anywhere. I do have a LinkedIn and articles I've written for my school and other publications. It just sits there idle. I made the LinkedIn for college when I graduated in 2015 so I obviously understand how the process works. Just tired of hearing not working as an actual threat/punishment. Most of these kids are lazy bums these days anyway.
How absolutely unsurprising it is that madcow sees nothing wrong with this sign.
Par for the course for one a poster cut from the same ilk as liverwurst.
first of all, you need to give a trigger warning before being mean to me.
second of all--that pic shows that people from across different races can make bad signs. Did he make the sign out of the racial hatred in his heart or a bad joke? I don't know--I am sure you know him well enough to make that decision.
the big difference between this sign and the OP was “if I was black I would be picking cotton” The sign you posted leaves more questions than answers. Why are three girls asking a guy to the prom?
So there's a *huge* difference between this and the announcer Â
who they simply *had* to punish for saying "cotton picking mind". There's a real danger in overreacting because now you make the actual bad stuff equivalent. People have to start thinking a little more (or at least some) on all sides.
The sign you posted leaves more questions than answers. Why are three girls asking a guy to the prom?
I assumed the message was directed to three different prospective dates (not necessarily boys, BTW). You’re right, though: one popular kid might be on the receiving end of a triple invitation. Prom has become much more free-form: groups go together as “dates”, friends go together without embarrassment or apology. It’s not quite ”Wild Wild Country”, but the conventions have loosened up.

there was an article explaining the picture above with the three girls which was in respect of a florida high school. apparently it was posted by one of the two white girls asked and she added a caption "she said yes". i.e. the two white girls were asking the black girl to the prom. it's not clear if it was racist mockery or thegirls were stepping up for their friend who was subject to a racist cotton picking comment. if it's the former, it's just another example of racist crap. if the latter, it's admirable that these girls would step up to racist crap, but still bad judgment to take and share that photo given the potential for misunderstanding.

Thank you Les. I would’ve thought the difference between the two signs was pretty apparent but I guess some will go to any lengths to excuse racism (like suggesting one doesn’t know what’s truly in that kid’s heart for instance... or blowing it off as not a big deal).

madgiantscow tries really hard to use terms like snowflake, trigger warnings and pearl clutching lingo to disparage anyone who take offense at the unquestionable racist sign in the OP. maybe he would take offense if the promposal sign said "if I was white, I would be picking up my spam from walmart, but I'm picking you for the prom."
good point. Overuse of any word diminishes the meaning Â

I personally feel like all those terms that are being thrown around lately (snowflake, 'triggered' and 'pearl clutching') are childish and immature. Not surprising considering from they've seemed to originated from. I just find this line particularly funny:
Quote:
Did he make the sign out of the racial hatred in his heart or a bad joke? I don't know--I am sure you know him well enough to make that decision.
It's funny because whenever there's an incident involving a minority doing something stupid I don't believe I've once seen him suggest wondering what's in that person's 'heart' before passing judgement. But here we have this kid and suddenly we should wonder whether he's really meant for his sign to be racist or whether he was just 'joking'.
He's apparently not going to the prom (big deal) which sounded like a mutual decision between the school and the family and the school is considering disciplinary action.
the NAACP is calling for expulsion.
How do you appropriately punish this kid and set a tenable precedent as well as a deterrent?

I honestly don't know.
Not being allowed to attend the prom is a given.
Perhaps some kind of school discipline such as a week suspension and maybe perhaps some kind of community service would be fair I guess.
But I don't know if expulsion is necessary and that's just my opinion.
The reason why I'm not sure what should 'appropriately' be done to punish him, that will at the same time be sure to act as a deterrent, is that short of him having some kind of life altering experience... I don't see what can be done to him to erase this racism from his heart. He sent this to a girl who 'liked' his message. Think about that... that means there's a whole group of these kids who think that there was nothing wrong with his sign. Had she reacted differently and shunned him that would've MAYBE had the greatest affect on him... but instead she gave him a thumbs up.
ESPN removed a reporter from a UVA/VT game whose name was Robert Lee b/c that might be confused with Robert E Lee and be viewed as racist. Granted it was right after the Charlottesville incident, but get a grip. People are more evolved than that I'd hope.
the guy is Asian.
That was really was insane. But it's ESPN - MSESPN, to be precise. ;)
ESPN has had a ton of low points. That may have been the lowest.

is not helping anyone. It is likely making people paranoid and hopeless. If everyone is so racist, why should I even try?
It actually really is helping a handful of people. Racism is now a money making industry. Those who do not see that are the ones who are helping to fuel that industry.
and I don't believe there ever will be unfortunately. I'm not sure we as a species will ever evolve to the point of racism being eradicated... at least not in my lifetime and I'd bet not for a few generations to come.

While it can, and in my opinion likely, to be reduced, it will never disappear. Same with religious intolerance and, for that matter, all forms of intolerance. Someone will always need a scapegoat, an "other", to blame for their own shortcomings and lack of success.

I doubt it'll even be reduced... at least not to a point of any real significance anyway. Not when you have some people on this very thread willingly showing an indifference... if not dismiss entirely... an issue that greatly affects a group of people. On a thread that had about 15 to 20 people post on it (maybe... I didn't actually go and count) you had about 3 to 4 people who posted something that, IMO, doesn't help fix this issue. That's just on this thread... on this site. One thread and at least a quarter of those that posted on it show a clear lack of empathy or understanding of how a picture like that hurts a person's feelings. Instead I get told that maybe it was just a joke... or that the anger I have seeing yet another picture like that appear in the news is only done to make someone money... or some other bullshit.

Kid's fucked and rightfully so. You think employers don't google applicants? Think again
Par for the course for one a poster cut from the same ilk as liverwurst.
Most of these kids are lazy bums these days anyway.

first of all, you need to give a trigger warning before being mean to me.
second of all--that pic shows that people from across different races can make bad signs. Did he make the sign out of the racial hatred in his heart or a bad joke? I don't know--I am sure you know him well enough to make that decision.

It’s not quite ”Wild Wild Country”, but the conventions have loosened up.

the big difference between this sign and the OP was “if I was black I would be picking cotton” The sign you posted leaves more questions than answers. Why are three girls asking a guy to the prom?
Thank you Les. I would’ve thought the difference between the two signs was pretty apparent but I guess some will go to any lengths to excuse racism (like suggesting one doesn’t know what’s truly in that kid’s heart for instance... or blowing it off as not a big deal).

complaining/outrage over Feely and the prom is snowflake
*This* is not snowflake. It's actually real.

madgiantscow tries really hard to use terms like snowflake, trigger warnings and pearl clutching lingo to disparage anyone who take offense at the unquestionable racist sign in the OP. maybe he would take offense if the promposal sign said "if I was white, I would be picking up my spam from walmart, but I'm picking you for the prom."
I personally feel like all those terms that are being thrown around lately (snowflake, 'triggered' and 'pearl clutching') are childish and immature. Not surprising considering from they've seemed to originated from. I just find this line particularly funny:
It's funny because whenever there's an incident involving a minority doing something stupid I don't believe I've once seen him suggest wondering what's in that person's 'heart' before passing judgement. But here we have this kid and suddenly we should wonder whether he's really meant for his sign to be racist or whether he was just 'joking'.
the NAACP is calling for expulsion.

So what do you think?
Sorry SomeFan but I have no idea what you're trying to say here. I've never said 'everyone' is racist... where are you getting that from?
ESPN removed a reporter from a UVA/VT game whose name was Robert Lee b/c that might be confused with Robert E Lee and be viewed as racist. Granted it was right after the Charlottesville incident, but get a grip. People are more evolved than that I'd hope.
the guy is Asian.
That was really was insane. But it's ESPN - MSESPN, to be precise. ;)
ESPN has had a ton of low points. That may have been the lowest.

I wish there was simple answer, but there's not.
It actually really is helping a handful of people. Racism is now a money making industry. Those who do not see that are the ones who are helping to fuel that industry.

is not helping anyone. It is likely making people paranoid and hopeless. If everyone is so racist, why should I even try?

Wow... racism is an industry? Never knew that.
How can I get in on some of that money?
While it can, and in my opinion likely, to be reduced, it will never disappear. Same with religious intolerance and, for that matter, all forms of intolerance. Someone will always need a scapegoat, an "other", to blame for their own shortcomings and lack of success.

and I don't believe there ever will be unfortunately. I'm not sure we as a species will ever evolve to the point of racism being eradicated... at least not in my lifetime and I'd bet not for a few generations to come.

And then you wonder why we are angry.
