NFT: Golden State Killer caught?

PaulBlakeTSU : 4/25/2018 11:38 am
The word is that the elusive Golden State Killer, responsible for 12 murders, 50 rapes, and 100 burglaries decades ago has finally been arrested.

He is the subject of I'll Be Gone in the Dark, #1 on the New York Times best-seller list, written and researched by Patton Oswalt's late wife, who passed right before finishing and publishing the book.

I can't imagine the grieving process of losing a spouse, but knowing that this was her life's work, I imagine that today must feel incredible for him (and for all the family members of the long-forgotten victims).

Haven;t heard of this one

thought it was related to the Zodiac. This is great to hear, awful story. Bay area seems to have been on edge in the 70's - 80's. Hope they caught the right man.
Interesting

I occasionally browse the Unsolved Mysteries subreddit, and there had been a lot of chatter on there in recent months that police were making significant progress. Apparently that was true.

It's interesting that the guy is that old - most of the speculation that he was late teens/early 20s in the mid-70s when this began. This guy was close to 30 when the attacks started.

are big true crimes buffs and have been following this one for awhile.

Over the last year or so between things like Michelle McNamara's book and a few documentaries, there's been a big renewed interest in the case. Given how long ago these attacks were, I didn't believe it would make a difference.

My GF maintained that the renewed interest would lead to an arrest. Looks like she was right! This guy was a real sicko and called many of his victims YEARS later to threaten them. Hopefully they can all achieve some sort of peace now
I've been reading
bluepepper : 4/25/2018 1:01 pm : link
a lot about this one lately. It was the subject of a couple of TV shows as well as the McNamara book. Fascinating case. Upwards of 50 rapes in Northern California, mostly Sacramento, and then 10 murders in Southern California. T

According to this the suspect was a cop at one point and also in the military. They have DNA so if this is him it can be easily proven.

He is 100% DNA match. In other words, this is definitely the guy,

He is in custody and IS talking,

He was a police officer in Auburn, CA although was fired from this position after being caught shoplifting in 1979,

This means he was a member of law enforcement for all but one of the EAR attacks. After his dismissal from the force he escalated exclusively to murder, (with thanks to /u/ragnarockette for this clarification)

Was born in 1947 (possibly 1945), so would have been in the upper predicted age range (based on victim statements),

He has confirmed to LE that he was also the Visalia Ransacker (a B&E spree the pre-dated the main EAR attacks) Much disagreement was originally had as to whether the VR was or was not the EAR. Turns out he was!

DeAngelo is a former Auburn, California, police officer who was fired in 1979 for shoplifting a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a drugstore, according to Jones. He worked as a police officer in Exeter and Auburn between 1973 and 1979.

he had no trouble breaking into houses with dogs, but I am not sure what exactly dog repellent is and how well it worked. If it was a pepper spray type thing, the residue would have still been on the dog hours later.

Reading the replies to that vid, obne guy called it 9 months ago that it's an ex-Law Enforcement.

Also, the fact that the dogs had trouble tracking him is obviously because he used Dog Repellent which he shoplifted so there was no paper trail back to him

One of the theories is that he sprayed himself with it so he couldn't be tracked (Since he usually left on foot or on a bike). That also explains why some victims claimed he had a funny smell to him
Really only read about this case yesterday

and have been down a rabbit hole since. Lot of these facts are crazy, want to hear from his family.
Crazy I just listened to a podcast on him from an investigative
