back in late December. He said, and I quote...
In terms of team building, I'm old fashioned. Offense scores points, defense wins championships. There's been six matchups, I believe, in the Super Bowl of No. 1 offenses versus No. 1 defenses and the defenses have won five of the six. So, I truly believe in that. I'm going to say this right now, style of offense has changed; obviously there's that college influence, so obviously the style of defense has changed to a certain degree. But, at the end of the day, it's the same three things you had to do in '35 that you got to do now in 2018. You got to run the ball. You got to stop the run. You got to pressure the passer.Everywhere I've been and with the great teams that I've been associated with - those were three very big staples. Another philosophy about team building, Tom said it to me. Tom Coughlin said it to me my first year, his first when he came in here. He said big men allow you to compete, and that's really just so true. The o-line and the d-line,I believe in the hog mollies. We've had some great groups here, had great groups everywhere I've been, and we're going to get back to that. They do allow you to compete.

I know the talk lately has been that the Giants are going either Darnold, if he falls, or Barkley. But Gettleman has a philosophy, and based off his belief the obvious choice at #2 would be Bradley Chubb. He immediately fills the void left by JPP, is an elite pass rusher who is also great in run defense, and bolsters a defense that was really poor a year ago.
Ive been on the Chubb bandwagon for a while now (check out my mock draft I posted in March, and I still believe he makes the most sense for this team at that spot in the draft. Last time we drafted #2 we took a pass rusher out of the state of NC, and the Jets picked right behind us...
More Justin Tuck than Michael Strahan.
Except that's not how the NFL is trending.
It's still a quarterbacks league.
I would hope the Giants are still guided by the same ethos.

Lol it's not? Check the playoff teams this year most had top 10 rushing attacks...

Giants won a SB with Jeff Hostetler. But in all four of their SB championships they had a dominate pass rush (LT, Banks, Strahan, Osi, Tuck, JPP).
Plus, with JPP gone it leaves us thin in that regard.
But Hostetler is not a good example for argument that QB isn't more important than defense. He needed to be of a certain talent level for that to work.
I think overall the front seven has a lot of question marks outside of Snacks, Ogletree and Tomlinson. Can Goodson stay healthy, can players like Vernon, Moss and Okwara make the transition from end to OLB, how good is Kareem Martin? And depth is clearly an issue as well if we have an OL playing NT right now.
When I think about depth along the lines, I start to think about how a trade with Buffalo could make that a 1 draft repair job. It's really tempting to me.
Eric, do you think a trade down then would be better for the Giants. If they trade back with say Buffalo, they could grab a guy like Vita Vea at 12
I would have though the staple might have been QB. He’s only had Jim Kelly, Kerry Collins, John Elway and Cam Newton and Eli Manning at QB.
I guess its easy to say its those 3 things when you have never had to worry about QB.

Teams passed 58% of the time on 2nd down. Last time it was a 50-50 split was 2008. They're passing 56% of the time on 3rd and 3 or less to go. The traditional linebacker position is becoming obsolete in favor of hybrid safety/defensive backs. The nickle corner is becoming almost as valuable as the 2nd outside corner. Wide recievers, pass rushers and DBs average contracts in the double digits, while RBs are valued slightly above kickers. Wade Phillips has adjusted his defense philosophy to have his lineman play to rush the passer first and worry about the run on the way to the QB. The Rams traded us their over paid LB and brought in pass rushers and DBs.
It's a passing leagues.
I'd love to see Barkley in blue. But I wonder if we can afford that luxury. I think we can trade back and still pick up a good QB if so desired.
I'd love for the Giants to accumulate more picks, especially with the state of the roster right now and lack of depth at numerous positions. Even put out a mock draft weeks ago with a trade down scenario.

Exactly my thinking. I really do want Barkley. But 2 1st and 3 seconds? Plus a pick in'19? I think I would draft 4 lineman and one back or QB. Not sexy, but we really could reload quickly.

Eric: In a 3-4 D, the depth along the lines is mitigated a bit by the fact that the OLBs are really guys who help to rush the passer. In addition, Snacks wasn't there today, so that will help when he was back.
I am normally with you and in favor of accumulating picks, but we need a QB in the worst way. We can address the D-Line in rounds 2 and 3. We still have 3 picks within the first 69 picks of the draft after the second overall pick. Why do people make it seem that if we pass up Barkley or Chubb that the world is coming to an end? If we pass on a QB, our team will be in QB hell, and it won't make a shred of a difference if we have depth along the defensive line.
But if they don't like the QBs, then they need to accumulate picks.
Harrison will be the starting nose tackle but he can't play a full game. We have two starting DLs plus a third who will be on suspension. We have nothing behind them.
