The Thursday night draft still sucks

Greg from LI : 4/26/2018 9:52 am
Everything Goodell does makes me like the NFL less. A helluva lot of people have things they need to do on a Thursday night - my son has a Little League game at 6:30, and after that I have work to do. I'm so glad the ginger jackass pulled the draft away from the weekend!
The old format was the best
Jay on the Island : 4/26/2018 9:53 am : link
On Saturday rounds 1-3 and Sunday 4-7. I used to take off from work and watch it at my friends place with lots of food and beer.
"ginger

jackass"? Gotta say I haven't heard that one before

Agreed. I miss the Saturday-Sunday format.

Miss marathon couch draft weekend
I so miss the weekend draft.....
Reb8thVA : 4/26/2018 9:56 am : link
it was more of an event for the hardcore faithful.
I'm with you...
Chris684 : 4/26/2018 9:57 am : link
It was better on Saturday. Wake up, have some breakfast/brunch/lunch and do some day drinking.

I had a bad feeling about the direction of this league when Tagliabue was leaving. It has been every bit as bad as I thought it was going to be. Goodell sucks.

My passion for NYG is unchanged. My love for the league around them is dying slowly each year.
Agree. Draft weekend was awesome in the old days
mfsd : 4/26/2018 9:57 am : link
Now we wait all day through a bunch of contrived nonsense (red carpet?) for one pick tonight.

I will not disagree

Dragging the freakin thing out over three days, the bastids!
I would agree

however, not sure if this makes me less of a fan in some of your eyes (don't care), but I find the NFL draft to be soooo boring and tedious. Afterwards I love seeing who the Giants got and researching them, etc.

I like watching the Giants pick, but hearing the talking heads drone on and on, updating their best available players, explaining why they are right and teams are wrong, blah blah blah.

So, for that reason I don't mind the Thursday night round 1 and Friday night round 2 - 3 but only because I usually hate the draft.

this year obviously I have more interest it's a crucial draft for the G-men and they pick 2nd.

but normally I'd check here to see who the Giants picked.
The all mighty dollar
BigBlueDownTheShore : 4/26/2018 9:59 am : link
destroyed the old draft format.

You really can't blame Goodell for doing what the Owners want in maximizing profit.

I could have lived with Friday night first round, and then everything else over Saturday, but the prime time spot takes some fun out of it.
Don't miss it
bc4life : 4/26/2018 10:01 am : link
But think maybe Friday instead of Thursday worked better.

Add me to
Photoguy : 4/26/2018 10:08 am : link
the list of people who miss the old S-S format. It made for a special weekend.

Of course, now that I'm a grandfather with two active travel team ball players, in addition to being a Saturday morning volunteer at the local aviation museum, my weekends are pretty much taken care of...lol.
Totally sucks
Torrag : 4/26/2018 10:14 am : link
The Draft Weekend at our house was an established tradition.
It's going to really suck this year.

Giants are going to be so close to picking again when we get, "That's all for tonight. See you tomorrow folks!"

Need to invent a time machine to travel several hours into the future to see who the Giants draft already!
THUrsday night is better IMO
Joey from GlenCove : 4/26/2018 10:42 am : link
Going to work the next day and also getting a full reaction from the media world is better in a Friday.

I also rather be outside on a Saturday
I hate the weeknight draft.
truebluelarry : 4/26/2018 10:44 am : link
I loved having it all day on Saturday. I would have friends over for backyard grilling and all day tailgating. It was always a blast.

I don't follow the draft as closely anymore because I don't have that same anticipation anymore. I'll watch tonight because the giants are picking at #2, but normally I am content to read about it on BBI the next morning.

The old draft would always fall on our invitational track meet. I brought a radio out on the field and listened to every pick in between my events!
The production is terrible now too
widmerseyebrow : 4/26/2018 11:02 am : link
I will gladly read the Twitter spoilers ahead of everyone else and with the added bonus of not having to watch that nonsense.
Goodell is such a phony little doosh.
Victor in CT : 4/26/2018 11:06 am : link
We know what year's draft it is. You can say it before the first pick. There is no need to say it before every fucking pick of the 1st round.

And then, the phony bro hugs. UGH!
what
Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/26/2018 11:08 am : link
bugs me is they've turned it into a Oscar-like production... red carpet, glitz, etc.

I miss seeing the draftnik nerds in the balcony living and dying with picks made in rounds 9, 10, 11, and 12. Those guys were the real diehards.

Friday night at 7pm for picks 33-64? Lame.

I'm always sitting on my bus in traffic trying to follow on my phone. It sucked when the Giants traded up for Landon Collins. It's going to suck again tomorrow when the Giants pick second.
I like the new format
Hades07 : 4/26/2018 11:29 am : link
I used to burn a whole weekend watching the draft. Now I don't watch and just follow updates on my phone. Going to watch my kid compete in a karate tourney on Saturday. My wife is taking the other rugrat to his riding competition the same day, why do they tend to always schedule everything at the same time.
sigh...
Eric from BBI : Admin : 4/26/2018 11:30 am : link
forgot about the stupid hugs. As stated, what a douche.
I don't mind it

Yea, what is with that? Shake the man's hand and congratulate him. The hug is inappropriate IMO.

Everything is like that now, The Espys, the MTV award shows, even the fucking kids choice awards...its utterly ridiculous.

MLB draft is still pretty hardcore
The best thing about the draft is the raw emotion

When Takk McKinley was drafted, it was amazing to watch. It beats all the phony hugs and shit.
This is so right...
bw in dc : 4/26/2018 11:33 am : link
Goodell f-cks up everything. I can't figure the owners out - either they are completely tone deaf and don't see how much Goodell is dismissed or they sort of like that he's polarizing and like the news he creates...

It's only a matter of time before the draft is a full week event with a round per day.

Used to dislike it but I am used to it now
Oscar : 4/26/2018 11:34 am : link
It’s kind of fun on a Thursday night. Prefer this to actual Thursday night football.

Frees up Saturday and I don’t really feel the need to watch any of the later rounds so it’s a nice little one-night event.

This year I will probably be done watching after the tenth pick or so.
love having it on Thurs/Fri night
Rory : 4/26/2018 11:37 am : link
Its nice out and I have shit to do on the weekends.

Fucking hate how everyone boos every pick. You're still watching and here spending money yet you boo...just STFU

So do I, I miss the business like analysis that was loved by the true diehards. Now at the sake of the diehards Goodell is trying to please the fringe football fans who tune in for the circus.
I loved Saturday / Sunday Draft
Frank from CA : 4/26/2018 12:37 pm : link
BBQ feasting for two days with my sons. Steaks one day and a Tri-Tip Roast with Ribs on the other day. Burgers and Brats for Lunch. Talking football all day Saturday and learning about players that barely mentioned up until the draft. Having a spreadsheet with Colin's draft board along with a print out of the draft order for all the rounds. My sons scratching off the players as they are picked. NFL Network on the One TV and ESPN on the other TV. My wife would be out that weekend. Sneak in lawn duty for a mini break. On Sunday my sons would check in every so often to get appraised of the latest picks. Before NFL Network ESPN would be on TVs in each room. It was great.

weekend on the couch is too hard to come by. Those days ended when I had kids.

The draft starts as they're going to bed, so it's super convenient, and I can pop in and out as I please on Saturday.
