My thoughts regarding the Giants current options...

Roto Wizard : 4/26/2018 12:00 pm
Hey there everyone! Hope all the rest of the BBI family is doing well - certainly can't complain that this has been a boring past few weeks leading up to the draft, plenty of intrigue and speculation with smokescreens abound.

I was itching to get some thoughts down to share for the rest of the posters on the forum regarding my thoughts about the current options that the Giants have with the number two pick. Like the majority of other posters, I don't have any particular inside knowledge or sources, I just form an opinion on what I read and hear from the beat writers that cover the team. In my estimation, the team currently has three different choices available to them.

1. Stick with the No.2 pick and draft DArnold
2. Stick with the No.2 pick and draft Barkley
3. Attempt to find a way to trade down, but remain in the top 5-6 selections.

Why not take Chubb?

I've seen plenty of thoughts recently regarding Chubb, and there is a lot to like about him - high motor, doesn't take plays off, we just traded JPP, Bettcher's defense isn't always strictly 3-4 so he is versatile enough to be selected. Of the three "blue chip" prospects that aren't QBs, he falls right there with Nelson and Barkley. Gettleman has also commented that he wants to be stronger in the trenches, both running the ball and defending against the run. I've watched some of his tape and although he is an intriguing combination of size and speed, I don't think that he's worthy of the second overall selection. His size/speed ability is enticing, but just not who I think we should select. I might be in the minority there.

And Rosen?

Hell. No. Look, he might be the most polished quarterback in the draft, but there are enough red flags both on and off the field to make me shy away from him. He has a history of injuries, ranging from his arm to the two concussions he suffered last year on the field. His arm strength is good, but not elite. Many have questioned his heart, and if it really lies with football at all. Recent interviews have brought this up time and time again, and although he defends his position of wanting to play in the NFL, to me he seems like an injury or two away of giving up the sport and pursuing a different opportunity instead. He also has several incidents off the field that make me question his judgement, from the hat that he wore to the hot tub incident, etc. He just doesn't strike me as a Giant. I've seen plenty of posters on the site clamor for him based upon the intangibles - decision making, coming from a pro-style offense, etc. I'd just pass on him personally.

Say we trade down - how far should we go?

I can't see us trading past 6, personally - and that is assuming we can get another party to tango with. It sounds from all reports that if the Browns opt to NOT take DArnold and select Mayfield instead that we should have PLENTY of interest from other teams about trading up for DArnold, most especially the Broncos.

In a perfect scenario, we would trade out of two and get the fourth pick. One can pretty much assume that if we trade out of two, that the first three selections in the draft will be QBs, which will allow us to get something in return for trading down, while still having the Chubb/Barkley combo to pick from. The problem is that the Browns have little incentive to work with us on this, unless they are blown away by a third team trying to move UP. I've seen Pat Leonard throw around deals like this - it makes sense in a lot of aspects.

What do you have against QBs?

If Gettleman DIDN'T say that he had plenty of faith in Eli and publicly endorsed him, that would be one thing. But he did. He said that he believes he has several years left, and he also has no idea what we have in Davis Webb, since McAWorthless didn't opt to give him any real snaps last year. Webb is saying all the right things currently, but who knows what we actually have in him. I sure as hell don't. If we took any QB with the No.2 pick, I doubt that Eli would be a huge fan of that, considering it would essentially be pulling a 180 from what our ownership has stated. He can't be ignorant and think that he has another 5-10 years left in the league, but I don't think that he would enjoy us spending picks on the heir apparent and bypassing offensive talent.

But a RB? Really?? We could get another one in Round 2 like Chubb/Guice/Penny/Michel instead. Why not wait, take a DE/OL in the first round and then an RB in the second?

Again, this argument has a lot of merit. If we were able to trade down to 5-6, take Nelson, grab several picks in the process and then STILL get a good RB in the second round, it would be hard to argue with that. One has to wonder what the overall talent would be of one combination package over the other, with a Nelson/Penny vs. Barkley/XYZ OL.

Either way, I can't wait for tonight. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I wanted to share my thoughts with the rest of the board. Regardless of what we do or who gets picked I'm sure that BBI will be in meltdown mode. Can't wait to see how it all shakes out!!
one thing for sure

whoever is picked this board will have a meltdown.
I'll will be happy with whatever they do....

My preference is a small trade down and get one of the top non-QBs....Barkley, Chubb and Nelson....in that order....and add couple of premium picks

I would be fine with drafting a QB, but feel we would need to part ways with Eli sooner then later....as I would like new QB to play and learn asap.

I would be fine with a major trade for a boatload of picks....
Thx for the post

Agree no RB
Think you’re being tough on Rosen
What else would DG say about Eli. Why start a controversy that also shows your hand with this pick?
This draft is as divided for Giants fans as politics.

I don't remember ever seeing anything like this and I've been a fan since the 50's.
Josh Rosen

arm is elite. He has a better arm than over 90% of QBs in the NFL.
lol the hot tub incident
