Dan Duggan Manning film review

Strahan91 : 12:07 pm
For the sake of full transparency, I'm one of those people that believes the Giants should draft a QB and Eli, while not totally done may not have a ton left in the tank. With that being said, I thought this was an interesting film review of the games Beckham played in this past season. It's behind a paywall but you can sign up for a free trial to read it.

The big takeaways were that Manning still has his arm strength and hasn't declined in that regard although he suffered from inaccuracy and a poor offensive line. Poor accuracy when he did have a clean pocket was seemingly mostly a result of "hearing footsteps". I've seen other posters mention this before but if the OL play does improve, has Manning suffered from terrible OL play for so long that he can't recover from that or not? That's the big question if the OL play does improve...

We made Brady inaccurate by beating him up. Slick Ben's offense revolved around 3 second releases so no attention was paid to the OL. Well, our OL couldn't even give 3 seconds 90% of the time.

Bad OL killed David Carr's career.
He has been brutalized by our OL. He has been

happy-footed i to bad decisions, more than he usually has been. Physically, he hasn’t lost anything imo. Mentally? THAT I’m not certain of. If he overcomes being battle-scarred, he’ll be fine, I believe
I wonder if this can be un-learned

With a better OL, does he have more confidence in the pocket and therefore become more accurate? Or once you start "looking down" instead of looking downfield, are you done?

Are there examples of QBs that have reversed this trend?

Yes, Brady in the 4th qtr of SB XLII...:)

And he'll be even older going forward than last year..

Have to take that into account, as well.
Problem

is that most quarterbacks do have a limit on punishment. A big hit or an accumulation of abuse can turn a once-courageous QB into a gun-shy one.

I don't worry about Eli's arm. I worry about the fact that he's played scared the last two years. He may have lost his mojo.
Going to be another long year if he keeps showing up in the

He is suffering for PTS due to horrible OL....pocket collapsing and outside turnstiles.

The OL must be fixed.....6 years and counting.

I am not sure if Eli can regain his mojo....but he must or its over

although, during the Green Bay playoff game....I saw the old Eli we love and trust....as he was the beat offensive player on the field.....and of not for those drops from OBJ and others....game co told have gone differently.
The offense has been terrible

But even if you believe it is not Eli and he can play at a high level, you still need to build the Oline, you need a RB and someone besides Odell, which is going to take more than this year. By the time the pieces come together you will have everything in place, but no franchise QB. Not unless they get lucky.

It makes much more sense to secure the franchise QB when you have your chance, develop him and look to build around him. Opportunities aren't going to wait until Eli is ready to present themselves.
accuracy was never a strength for 10
sundayatone : 12:28 pm : link
even when he had a clean pocket,a strong running game would get him to a mid level, not much more.
Eli has been dealing with horrid OL play
Ten Ton Hammer : 12:39 pm : link
Since 2011. It's very realistic to think that that has a long term effect no matter how mentally tough he is. That kind of thing de-rails careers.
not to mention the McAdoo Mouse offense
HomerJones45 : 12:53 pm : link
and the dreck at wideout outside of Beckham the last two years. Made Reuben Randle look like Lenny Moore.
I think we can win with Eli

but that being said. He has definitely been gun shy the last 2-3 years. There are at least 3-4 plays each game where he is throwing a couple of seconds before there is any pressure. The result is his penchant for overthrowing his receiver.

It's understandable considering the shitty protection he has had but can he revert back to form.

Yesterday with popa and said the line looked completely different the other day in a good way. Said it looked like a professional NFL line.

One can hope Eli can get rid of the PTSD.
has there been a QB
who has bounced back from happyfeet? I honestly don't know, it seems like a tough thing to fight through. Like the yips in putting
yeah Eric nailed it

Did the past few years of poor line play cause permanent damage? we'll see.

I don't think he's lost his mojo. He brought us back in Philly and in Tampa when he had his full compliment of receivers. In both games the Giants the Giants were leading when he walked off the field but the defense couldn't hold 'em. Everyone talks about the offensive line, but he had no receivers at all after week 5. I mean, the guys he was throwing to (King, Rudolph, Powe and Roger Lewis) were awful (Sheppard was banged up most of the year too) and he had barely played with any of them before.

Bad offensive line and no receivers. That's a bad hand to play. I get the "mojo" question but I saw some last year and think he can bring it again.

I am with you here 100%. I just don't know if he can. No one does. We will have to see. How many games does he get this year if we start out losing before we have try someone else? If Eli looks average and we have a losing record going into the bye do we change to Webb or whoever we draft? The leash can't be long IMO.

If that's the case, it doesn't get better with a different QB. There is a systemic problem that should be fixed before a new QB can even be considered. Just go for Nelson and move on.

People really over look this. After week five there were WR's getting consistent playing time that shouldn't of even been in the NFL. Even worse, towards the end of the year those same WR's were not just playing, but starting. In addition, we had no running game.

Maybe rightfully so but Eli has been skittish in the pocket for years.
