Report: Giants owners want a QB at no. 2

EddieNYG : 4/26/2018 1:46 pm
The Giants Wire just posted this article, but the source is Walter Football so I guess just take this with a grain of salt (like anything else), but figured I would share it.

Quote:
Walter Football reports that Mara and Tisch would prefer to see a quarterback drafted at No. 2 overall on Thursday night, and not necessarily someone like Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

The big mystery of the 2018 NFL Draft is what the Giants will do with the second-overall pick. I’ve heard that general manager Dave Gettleman has their top players rated Saquon Barkley, Bradley Chubb, and Quenton Nelson in the top three. However, I’ve also heard that the team’s owners want the organization to take a quarterback. If Sam Darnold does not go to the Browns, I’ve been told that ownership would not want Gettleman to pass on Darnold. That does not mean that Darnold or another quarterback will be the pick, but that is the latest scuttlebutt I’ve heard about the Giants.

good we want teams to know how valuable that pick will be

if Darnold is there DG needs to be blown away...maybe BUF does something crazy
So do we want the owner to have final say or not?

The owners meddling in the team. This always ends well.... Didn't Wellington get a mandate from the league in the 80s for the same meddling????
Sounds good to me.

Owners tend to get what they want.
As they should
lax counsel : 4/26/2018 1:48 pm : link
Likely the reason they were both meeting with Rosen, and probably didn't expect Darnold to be available. He may be now depending on if you believe the rumors.
Not that I don't believe it

So let me get this straight
jvm52106 : 4/26/2018 1:49 pm : link
at the start of the offseason Ownership were idiots, played it safe with DG, were a huge part of the Eli benching fiasco, keep their relatives to involved in scouting etc. but, with this one report they are suddenly the voices of reason and football knowledge...

Got it.
How is this a good thing?

Mara and Tisch shouldn't be making any decisions about which football players to take. For better or worse that's what DG is supposed to do.

Those two need to stop pretending ...

They're emotion driven Jerry Jones clones, let Gettleman do what he's paid to do - make the hard decisions. If HE wants a QB, so be it; otherwise, stay out of it, Bozos
I'd imagine this was discussed during the job interview

I find it unsettling if the owners are still calling the shots. This should be Dave Gettleman's decision. Not theirs.
I'm not saying the owners shouldn't have a say
pjcas18 : 4/26/2018 1:53 pm : link
but if that headline read: Jerry Jones wants a [insert whatever here] with the Cowboys top pick or Daniel Snyder wants a [insert whatever here] with the Redskins top pick the posts would all be things like LOL Redskins or stuff like that.

Exactly what I was thinking, well I went Dan Snyder instead of Jerry Jones, but exactly what I was thinking.
...
ilikethenygiants : 4/26/2018 1:55 pm : link
I'm sure for future/face of the franchise decisions, there's a lot of collaboration between ownership and GM. Just like in any big organization. If DG wants to replace Eli with X, or not - he'll probably explain his reasoning to the owners, they'll have some dialogue, and a collaborative decision will get made. Sounds reasonable. I'd seriously doubt an owner like Mara is barking orders at DG.

DG was fired by Carolina by the owner for not going along with what he wanted to do. Why would he come to the Giants situation if ownership was going to pull the same nonsense?

I call BS on this article.

All owners have some level of involvement. They sign off on the big decisions and make their preferences known. No one runs a business without any involvement.

Mara let McAdoo bench Eli for freakin Geno Smith, so... Mra seems to choose when to interject in things

They're worried about the Jets
jeff57 : 4/26/2018 1:58 pm : link
If the Giants don't take a QB and the Jets take Darnold or Rosen, they don't like the agita they will receive down the road.
I've had this feeling
shyster : 4/26/2018 1:58 pm : link
that Mara and Tisch are open to the QB while DG, who strikes me as a single-minded sort of follow, sees his job as to win. On September 9 against the Jags.

It may well have been M & T who mandated that all of the QBs be brought in for the visits.

Question may be how much latitude M & T think they have to give to DG in his first big moment.
Best news I've heard about the Giants in weeks...
Danny80 : 4/26/2018 1:59 pm : link
Still hoping for Rosen, but I will not complain with Darnold.

I've had the sense Mara interferes in this team more than Wellington ever did before George Young. And I believe ownership interference is the most likely cause of the horrible draft record over the past decade.

Whenever anyone asks about Giants' ownership's role in the draft, all we ever hear is a response something along the line of: "It's a process with input from everyone until we get a consensus". Well that's a bunch of horse snot. If the owner makes his desires known, there aren't many who are going to tell him to "fuck off".

I would hope Gettleman took this job with the express agreement of ownership that they would keep their opinions of college football talent to themselves. But I doubt that is the case.

It would not be surprising if the ultimate decision of tonight's pick is made by Mara. Just like it would not be surprising to learn he's played that role in every first round over the past decade.
I wonder if people bitching actually read it
UberAlias : 4/26/2018 2:00 pm : link
It starts by saying they generally don't force decisions on their GM. It sais a QB is their preference but also says that doesn't mean it will be a QB, meaning they are not saying they are forcing it on DG. Yet post after post ripping them for what the article does not say is the case.

EXACTLY! And given Gettleman's history with the Carolina ownership, I think he would do just that.

why you would think the owners wouldn't have any input on a franchise shaping draft pick
