So much talk about Offense when D slipped from #2 to #27th

BluesCruise : 5/2/2018 12:57 pm
from 2016 (11-5) 2nd Best Defense in the NFL

to 2017 (3-13) 26th best Defense in the NFL

I'm still scratching my head as to how that happened. Seemed Spags stopped blitzing and adopted McAdoos small ball (keep it close) strategy.

Frankly our offensive Stats last year slipped but nothing like the Defense. If Beckham had played we likely would have repeated 2016 offense.

We have changed the Defensive Co-Ordinator and the scheme to a 3-4

There is little to say here. Have we done anything to correct this appalling yr to yr decline?

This is the main Reason I wanted Chubb as our pick at #2

there were plenty of top notch RBs on the board in round #2

Our Running game with Darkwa and Gallman was more than adequate especially when we changed the Oline and Gallman finished strong .... if it aint broke, dont fix it.

To add to the misery our best d
defensive player just underwent surgery. I hope he is a quick healer.

I havent entered a new season with less Trophy hope since the mid- 70s. In the mid 70s Giants fans prayed for 1 game wins not SBs
Did you notice the finger pointing?

That locker room blew up.

Defense gave up.....after the they knew the offense had no chance to win
Chubb is not even a good fit

We could have used another corner or 2
When your offense had so many injuries
Pete from Woodstock : 5/2/2018 1:08 pm : link
your D is going to suck because they are out on the field all game!

In my opinion the whole team cratered when Perkins put up 4 50 Burgers and OBJ got hurt.

I want to know why McAdoo started Perkins and stuck with him....he signed his own pink slip with that move

When you are on the field
Big Blue '56 : 5/2/2018 1:12 pm : link
for 55 minutes of every game, have fingerpointing and injuries, you are in all likelihood going to plummet.

Besides, teams go up or down in rankings (sometimes drastically) from 1 year to the next. New year. New personnel and coaches

Its an afterthought for me

the idiots running the show are gone, Spags old tired defense is gone, we are changing schemes and have new life in the entire organization. The defense is pretty much guaranteed to be better its just a question of how much better.
I guarantee
Gman11 : 5/2/2018 1:25 pm : link
they won't have a 24 place decline in 2018. GUARANTEE!

Thats comforting....what kind of odds would Vegas give you on that bet?
The D dropped
Eli2020 : 5/2/2018 1:28 pm : link
Because of the offenses inability to sustain drives. If the offense could've got going earlier in the season instead of for a quarter and a half against the Eagles, they wouldn't have been so shitty.
No pass rush, no depth at DE, no LBs, shoddy FS play
yatqb : 5/2/2018 1:36 pm : link
and CBs who were either injured or didn't give a fuck once the season was in the shitter.

It's hard to talk about the defense given that we don't know some of the players (Mauro and Martin) haven't seen others at their new prospective positions (e.g., Vernon), and aren't really familiar with the new DC since he coached in another Division.

As others have said, an offense that can at least attempt to control TOP will help us a lot.
I think it fed on itself
NoPeanutz : 5/2/2018 1:42 pm : link
When the Offense couldn't make first downs, Giants kept giving the ball away, and finished #29 in time of possession. As a result, they fielded one of the hardest working defenses in football, even though they were flawed from the beginning.
It didn't go completely unnoticed
Matt M. : 5/2/2018 1:44 pm : link
Many here (myself included) were complaining just as much about the D all season. This is why I don't particularly like Spags. Outside of about 2.5 seasons, his defenses are mediocre to downright terrible. The outliers are seasons where he got absolutely dominant DL play, which has less to do with him since it has all been mostly the same scheme. If his DL don't play out of their heads every week, his defense doesn't cut it.
Plus, they picked up
Bill in UT : 5/2/2018 1:47 pm : link
at least 6 additions to the front 7 between the draft and UFA signings (in addition to losing JPP), probably all of whom will make the 53

They opened the season (presumably on the freshest legs they'd have all year) with an 8-play drive (punt), 9-play drive (FG), 14-play drive (FG). From jump, they just never got themselves off the field. It doesn't help that the Giants offense turned around two 3-and-outs in between those three extended drives, obviously, but the defense contributed as much to their own fatigue as the offense did, IMO.

That same routine seemed to continue all year. Anyone who lets the defense off the hook at all for their YOY decline is being way too kind.
Couple of Def guys were a little to "big for their britches" in 2016
Jimmy Googs : 5/2/2018 1:50 pm : link
so some decline was warranted.

But those guys put very little effort into playing defense after they saw the same bull-shit being produced by the Offense in early 2017. Bad attitudes, lack of effort, injuries (and so-called "injuries") than spiraled the whole crew into a bad defense.

Im not. I was trying to make the point about the impact of a woeful offense that was sorely crippled. Of course The D has to be culpable to whatever degree
Dont dislike Chubb
eric2425ny : 5/2/2018 2:06 pm : link
But Barkley was the right pick in my opinion. After reading that Gil Brandt had him rated higher than any RB in the last 63 years that opinion solidified. The defense last year was crippled by a crap offense that never controlled the clock, and injuries to many key players, some of which they played through. The team chemistry was awful and the whole team collapsed. I see the defense rebounding nicely this season. We also drafted three more defenders so clearly Gettleman wanted to improve the D, especially depth along the line.
When the offense goes 3 and out every single series
Knee of Theismann : 5/2/2018 2:46 pm : link
Your defense will end up on the field for 45 minutes a game defending a short field.
Slick Big Suit's
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/2/2018 3:09 pm : link
Pray OBJ Breaks a Slant for a 80 you TD to Win Strategy finally caught up to him.

And he couldn't motivate Alexander the Great. A key part to a good D.
Chubb would have been a blunder
giantstock : 5/3/2018 12:01 am : link
With the 2nd pick you don't go drafting a guy like CHubb away from his strengths.

And the right move was to draft offense early. The TD's were mostly due to OBJ's greatness. You can't continue to eb so one dimensional on offense.
my concerns
giantfan2000 : 5/3/2018 12:56 am : link
not that defense was bad last year
it is that we have not significantly upgraded from last year

and we lost two defensive leaders in JPP and DRC

Everything around the defense sucked.
manh george : 5/3/2018 1:08 am : link
Yes, the offense, but also special teams. Awful punter, awful kr.

Btw, I expect the Giants to take advantage of their second slot in waivers to add dbs and wrs. They did that at cb today. And also add at least one of each via FA.
the defence is completely different
msh : 5/3/2018 2:41 pm : link
ogletree takes the pierce role and quaterbacks the front 7 with martin, goodson and carter the LB corp is vastly better
they added alot of DL guys with both rush and run defending skills and that hybrid front will prevent offences from sticking with a single blocking scheme anymore as you wont know who is going to do what apart from snacks who will anchor that DL in the middle

mad and spags completely lost the secondry as they ended up suspending 3 of them, apple slid due to off field problems the team has made a big focus on upgrading the secondry depth and looking for the best safety to pair with collins

shurmur will put a proper scheme in place that will make the offence more effective and make better use of the guys they already had and barkley will ignite this team if they run so much deep safety to choke the passing game barkley will kill them they will have to pick thier poison blanket cover OBJ/Engram and shepard or play box safety to slow barkley they wont be able to do both
You have to ask yourself how much is talent ,how much is coaching
Big_Blue_in_the_Bronx : 5/3/2018 3:01 pm : link
How much is injury? And What combination is it of the three? On offense last year the Oline didnt help but it was 80% coaching as it was the year prior and then injuries ravaged the team.

Defense, also injuries played a role but players lost hope in MacAdoo and his ability to coach winning football.

With that said, we have kept most of the players but there have been more changes on the Defense vs the offense. New coach, going to a 3-4, losing DRC/JPP, gaining a great MLB in Ogletree. An upgrade of a DC. Some interesting draftees.

There is talent on D still but it will depend on how some wild-cards like Apple play.
