NGT- Browns go Denzel Ward at 4

Pascal4554 : 5/2/2018 2:09 pm
I couldn't follow BBI the night of the draft. What was the consensus on this pick? This surprised me as I didn't think Ward was one of the consensus Blue Chip prospects. Was he?
Donít know anything about him.
Big Blue '56 : 5/2/2018 2:14 pm : link
I thought Chubb would be the pick
Ward was probably the best corner in the draft
JoeyBigBlue : 5/2/2018 2:16 pm : link
He was picked high at 4, but the Browns needed a solid corner after releasing Joe Haden last season.
He's fast and has great cover skills. He's not who most
Ira : 5/2/2018 2:17 pm : link
'experts' picked at the that spot, but he was definitely a top 10 prospect and may turn out to be a good pick there. It certainly wasn't a big reach.
I think many viewed him
allstarjim : 5/2/2018 2:17 pm : link
as the top pure corner in the class and as a CB with shut-down potential. Sy also said not to be surprised to see him taken higher than projected and well within the top 10.

I was not surprised. It was a position of need, it's a premium position, and while they could have gone with Chubb, adding to their already very good defensive line doesn't help them as much as adding an elite CB.

I always thought Ward was a possibility for them at #4, but I was leaning Chubb for them just to have Garrett and Chubb as bookends and really unleash themselves on Roethlisberger, Dalton, and Flacco.

I don't think it was a bad pick.
I was very surprised...
BamaBlue : 5/2/2018 2:17 pm : link
Who REALLY knows, but I thought the Browns would go Barkley with #1 and still get Mayfield at #4. I get it that they didn't want to take any chances, but picking Ward over Chubb was another one of those 'what are the Browns thinking' moves.
Sy rated him as a tie

Thanks. I see in SY's rankings he had Ward graded high. I guess it surprised me to see him going 4th with all the love Nelson and Chubb were getting before the draft.
I still can't believe that they took him over Chubb
Jay on the Island : 5/2/2018 2:22 pm : link
team Chubb with Garrett would have been incredible for the defense. I know they had a need at CB but Chubb would have made the CB's life easier by pressuring the QB. It was a big mistake by Cleveland IMO.
It was a Brown's move
ZogZerg : 5/2/2018 2:23 pm : link
Smart teams go Chubb in that spot.
They could have grabbed a good corner in the 2nd.

I think I was surprised because I didn't see him in consideration at 4 with a lot of the mock drafts.
I was surprised
Matt M. : 5/2/2018 2:24 pm : link
because I thought Chubb would and should be the pick there. But, they still got an excellent player. I think he is the best CB in the draft and one of the best over the last few years.

he interviewed Gregg Williams who made two points.

1. His defense requires a press corner which the Browns didn't have prior to Ward.

2. He believes that Emmanuel Ogbah their 2nd round draft pick last year is an ascending player who compares to Chubb.
I went back to read the article
Giantsfan79 : 5/2/2018 2:42 pm : link
and Williams made a 3rd point.

They counted 28 snaps where Myles Garrett was within 2 steps of the QB when the ball came out. I guess they are banking on more coverage sacks.
It was one of several truly beautiful picks...
the mike : 5/2/2018 2:45 pm : link
for other NFL teams!

With Chubb, Nelson and Derwin James graded significantly higher, Ward was a terrible pick - reminiscent of another "Ohio St Buckeye DB" reach taken by the Giants in 2016. Dorsey basically handed the second best player in the draft Bradley Chubb to the Broncos at five.

But this wasn't nearly as bad as reaching for Baker Mayfield with Barkley available at number one. With that and the head scratching reach at #33 taking OL Corbet with Hernandez still on the board, Dorsey basically handed the Giants our first two picks in the draft - arguably the best two opening picks we have had in a decade.

You almost wonder if Dorsey is a covert agent secretly working for Elway and Gettleman? I truly can't imagine what it is like being a Cleveland Browns fan and count my blessings, despite the ups and downs we face as Giants fans, that I follow Big Blue.. And that is one thing of which, despite our very many differences here on BBI, I believe we can agree!

Spoken like a franchise that is living year-to-year instead of building a team that will contend 3-4 years from now.
Gregg Williams..

probably figured Ward is more likely to take out knees than Chubb.....
They had the #1 and #4 picks in the draft
Knee of Theismann : 5/2/2018 2:52 pm : link
And I think they ended up with the least possible value they could get. Let's face it: Mayfield, with his measurables, should not be a #1 overall pick, and Ward was mostly projected to go somewhere in the #9-#12 range.

Chubb should have been the pick, period. Consensus best defensive player in the draft a premium position and can play for 10-15 years.

Among the best to come along in years in that regard. Great kid too. Has all the traits, except size. And that's a big one. I'm a big fan of Denzel but that's the only thing that gives me some pause taking him that high.

Some big receivers could give him trouble. Coates from Indiana, a big guy, was the only game I saw him really struggle last season.

Stil think the pick was fine though. If he didn't go there, he wasn't getting out of the top 10
I have reservations about it.
Section331 : 5/2/2018 2:58 pm : link
Tremendous cover skills, but he's not at all physical. He just screams slot corner to me. Now maybe that is worthy of a #4 pick in today's NFL, and if he's "only" a slot corner, he'll probably be a very good one.
Ward is a really good prospect...
bw in dc : 5/2/2018 3:01 pm : link
but smaller than ideal. The good news is I don't see an Eli Apple situation with him... ;)

Ironically enough, I think Baker picked on him when Oklahoma went into the Horse Shoe and beat the piss out of the Buckeyes last year.

From what I remember, it was the other two corners, Sheffield and Arnette, that got picked on. Plus the LBs as a lot of big passing plays went to backs and tight ends.

Not that Baker didn't get a few on Ward too, because he got everybody that night. But I think Ward was ok.

You may be right. I thought the TD to Jones was on Ward.

It was just a bad night overall for the entire Buckeye D. I think OU domintaed TOP.

Yep! I'm an alum and also spent 3 seasons on the recruiting staff there while in school
There was an article that had a rumor the Browns had
jcn56 : 5/2/2018 3:39 pm : link
Mayfield rated #1 and Chubb rated #2 on their board, and had considered going with Chubb with one of their picks, but decided that the resources tied up in Garrett meant they needed to look at the next guy on their board instead.

Rumor, not some official statement, so take it at what it's worth.
There's only one takeaway from this draft related to Cleveland

Excellent. My daughter was being recruited by OSU for lacrosse. Went for a visit last year.

Since I am guessing you still have close ties to the program, how did Schiano, Urban, etc feel about the blow-up that occurred in Knoxville when Schiano got crushed by social media?
It's a great place
Kyle in NY : 5/2/2018 4:13 pm : link
So when Schiano came aboard there was a definite understanding that he'd look to go after two years, he's tremendously over qualified to be a college DC. So I know there was a lot frustration and anger on Urban's part with how that all played out, because he deserved that job. Now certainly he doesn't mind having him around for another year, but it was unfortunate how it happened.

The other factor is the staff members that it affects. When an assistant leaves they take a lot of junior staff members, interns, analysts, quality control guys, etc with them for promotions. I know a lot of people that got screwed over by that as they were expecting to be promoted to an SEC school. That's who I felt worst for.

I wasn't around Schiano for too long, only a few months. But I enjoyed learning from him and think his reputation is a bit overblown. He's tough no doubt, but that's ok in that business. I was a fan.

Good stuff. Thanks for that insight.

I feel bad for Schiano for the guilt by association with PSU. Thatís been well vetted and he wasnít part of any of that conspiracy.

I tried to hide it. Tried to make peace with it. I canít. Yeah yeah I know corners are vital but in todayís nfl corners are all but doomed to fail out there. If Iím choosing between a 88 level corner or an 87 level passrusher, or whatever position, Iím taking the latter.

Thanks prince, apple, will Allen and the rest, you ruined it for everyone else.

I agree with this line of thinking. You grab one of the other above average corners with the first pick in the second round and have Garrett and Chubb making a QB's life hell which then makes the corners life much easier.
