Wide Receiver, does it matter if we're deep at this position

Giantimistic : 5/2/2018 3:05 pm
If the giants go 4 wide, are our best: Beckham, Sheppard, Engram, Barkley with Rhett Ellison, Steward or Gallman staying into block--all three could also sneak out of the backfield. 5 wide, would include Beckham, Sheppard, Engram, Barkley and the the best of the remaining receivers. I could see us keeping only 5 receivers on the roster and a 4th tightend or extra running back.

We really have a lot of flexibility and looks we can go with. From everything I have been reading, it sounds like that not only does Barkley come in as our best running back, but he may also be one of our top 3 receivers on the team--I know he has to prove both his running and passing in the NFL.

Not too dive back into the debate on if we should have picked him, I just think anyone who is only evaluating him as a running back is missing his total value.
Why would we need an extra RB? 4 is enough

If anything, extra OLmen.

Do we have 5 we keepers?

Maybe 4 TE....we have 3 definate

learn from last season about not having depth at WR

Barkley, Gallman, Perkins, Stewart, and Shane Smith if we keep a fullback. Not sure what this staff will value. What did the Vikings have last year?

I learned that we are screwed without Beckham and who we had as backups were not great. We need another draft to upgrade the backups.

You may be right about online. Although a different situation, they had 9 oline last year.

or Cody "Career High 19 Receptions" Latimer occupies a starting wide-out position.

That is the single most depressing thing about the 2018 Giants.

Evidently the plan was to bring back the corpse of Brandon Marshall at reduced salary. When BM failed the physical (a hazard with corpses) DG was not willing to change the draft strategy; and the Cowboys were very appreciative to get Michael Gallup as a result.

Seems DG can always find DTs he values but not WRs. That's why Panthers had to go WR in first round this year after five years of DG's drafts.

There has been (and I'm sure will be) a chorus of "We have enough receiving options!"

And, just as surely, when the ball bounces off Lewis's or Latimer's hands and falls to the turf, there will be a chorus of "How do you expect Eli to succeed when he has to throw to a WR who wouldn't play for any other NFL team?"

The Vikings carried a fullback, CJ Ham, last year. The amount of offensive snaps he got varied wildly depending on the game plan. Mostly used in short yardage situations.

There is still time to sign another WR.
Brown Recluse : 5/2/2018 3:36 pm : link
They just signed a DT today so they're still looking at people.

I wouldn't sleep on Cody Latimer either. He has a lot of tools and was drafted in the 2nd round. We had a pretty good passing offense with Reuben Randle starting opposite Odell...and we have more options now than we did then (Engram, Bakley, Shepard), so I don't think the other guy needs to be a world-beater.
Isn't this part of the reason we hired Shurmur?

Aren't we hoping he schemes guys open?

It's not like DG completely neglected WR. He spent a 1st and two 2nds on WR during his five years (along with another 1st on a RB that can play slot WR). For reference, during that same time period, JR used one 1st and one 2nd on WR (and another 1st on a TE that can play WR).

Not that anyone should be using JR as the benchmark for successful drafting, but DG used more high picks on receiving options from 2013-17 than JR.
There will be
old man : 5/2/2018 4:00 pm : link
regular tryouts for areas where still weak.
Lots of guys out there that could be 2-trick ponies at WR: size, speed, deep or short routes, good blocker on screens and sweeps, sure hands....
Plus cuts now to camp, early camp cuts.
Can't

fix everything in one offseason. This was always a two year rebuild, even assuming Eli can still play. DG has made a great start.

I made my comment knowing that Panthers had used first round pick on a WR; had traded for Torrey Smith; and had signed Jarius Wright in FA.

That suggests a pretty bare WR cupboard.

Reviewing DG's picks over the five year period, I see one true WR in Kelvin Benjamin.

Devin Funchess was a TE until his final year at Michigan and some analysts thought that would be his best NFL position.

Curtis Samuel was designated a running back at Ohio State, rushing for 771 yards in his final year.

Samuel made little impact as a WR for the Panthers, catching only 15 balls through Week 10 last season when he got injured.

And McCaffrey is of course also an RB.

I'd call that a lack of respect for the role of wide receivers as such.
How in the world

are we deep at WR?

OBj....coming back from an injury....he is a question mark.....let's assume he is ok physically? What about mentally? Without an extended contract in his hands, what will his attitude be? Will he play injured, and risk further injury?

SS......he played ok as a rookie, nothing special.....we expected more his second year, especially with OBj hurt, and we didn't see it.....is this the year he elevates his game?

EE did not turn the NFL on fire last year....there were a lot of drops....the offensive scheme called for him to do a lot of short crossing patterns.....would love to see him do more deep seam routes......he has to step up his game also...

I am just not that impressed with Ellison thus far....

What happens if EE or OBJ are injured?

We do not have a legitimate #2 WR......

Can Barkley be a wunderkind out of the backfield? Remains to be seen.....

Add the work that has to be done with this OL, and there are a lot of question marks....

This is a fragile team....by that I mean, an injury here and there and this team is in trouble....

It has to stay away from major injuries, and Shurm has been installed on a high pedestal......can he produce? A lot is being asked of him....
Love the positive outlook

Keep forgetting unless we field 22 pro bowlers it's a big FAIL for management. The team has holes and depth problems, so do a lot of teams. Get over it.

Shepard improved his Ypc from 2016 to 2017 by over 2 yards per. He improved. He missed games last year but he improved.

Ereck Flowers was drafted #9 overall. Draft position doesn't matter. Lattimer hasn't even had the career Roger Lewis has had.
No. With our injury history
BillT : 5/3/2018 7:12 am : link
Depth is of no value whatsoever. It’s not like we lost both of our WR in one game last year or anything.
Do we even need to put 2 wide-outs on the field?
Jimmy Googs : 5/3/2018 7:35 am : link
Besides BBI told me Barkley plays like every position except for Center...
I don't understand the gloomsters

When Dave Gettlemen took the team over the Giants had more holes than foundation. The only position on the field that wasn't a need was at TE. Literally every other position group was at least weak if not complete crap. DG had 6 draft picks and not a lot of cap room to work with. If you expected a complete team this year than the fault is yours. You can not rebuild a whole team with 6 draft picks.
