Is something up with Damon Harrison?

Milton : 5/2/2018 5:17 pm
Last year he was a regular in the offseason program and a voice often heard from during it. This year, I'm not sure what his participation has been (I recall reading he showed up the first day and hasn't been seen much since). And as much as I realize the differences between DEs in a 3-4 vs DEs in a 4-3, BJ Hill still strikes me as much more DT than DE (even in a 3-4).

Going into year three on a five year deal, are the Giants planning for this being his last with the team?
I doubt it
Jay on the Island : 5/2/2018 5:18 pm : link
He is one of the most important players on the team. He is arguably the best NT in football. His contract isn't outrageous either.
Best player on the team.last year

Maybe skipping Voluntary

Has the FO worried since next year is his opt out year, and caused the team to go one more DT(DE in the 3-4) rather than OL.
Or his relatively bargain contract is a little nudge for a revision...he deserves more $$$.

If he didn't have an excuse, it's a horseshit move from him not to show up. New coaches, new defensive scheme, and the fucking team was 3-13 last year. He's a great player, but what the fuck?
I don't think he is

Let's wait until we hear why he isn't there. He might decide to work out on his own. This isn't a guy who is going to take it easy and show up out of shape. He is going to do what he thinks puts him in the best position to succeed.

Then why should any of them show up?

Weak rationalizations for what's been a weak, leaderless group of players.

Imo, he has said some pretty weird things since he has been here. He called out Carl Banks when Banks said players quit. He told him that he should call them out. Banks responded by saying that is not his job anymore. That is for someone in the locker room to do it.

Then he says recently that he didn't want to step up and be a leader last year because he knew what kind of season we were going to have? WTF? That might be the worst reason I ever heard. So, you will only step up and lead when it is easy or you have a successful team? Leadership doesn't have an off switch. And, if anything, if he saw this from the early stages then why didn't he try to correct it?

I like Snacks. I think he is a great player. He seems like a cool dude but that was some bullshit. Not everybody needs to be a leader but don't start saying you would have stepped up if it was ideal. He seems like he is not a problem in the locker room but I don't look at him as a leader of this team. I was very disappointed last season and how much these guys were talking.

I am usually 100% in disagreement with GoTerps' opinion on voluntary workouts but in this case I agree. Show up and get to work with a new staff and show your commitment.

There doesn't appear to be any leader on this team. Not even amongst the veterans. It's very, very weird. And while I would not put that as a reason as to why this team has under-achieved for YEARS now, I don't think it has helped matters, either.

but i recall he at one point said he has no interest in being a vocal leader as it's just not his style. and there is nothing wrong with that. he is a terrific player and a good guy

also remember he has that chronic knee issue. he's probably managing it and if he isn't going to participate it makes no sense to make him be there for voluntary things.

Why be a leader when you get paid even if you lose? And quite a few did not even lose their jobs until Ben and Jerry were shown the exit.

I've been pretty consistent on the issue of fans being outraged that players don't show up to work when they're not obligated to. I think it's silly. It happens every year. When the team wins, nobody keeps track. When the customers are unhappy, everyone is watching the attendance card like hall monitors and insisting it's a vital part of building a winning team.

Damon Harrison knows what is job is next year. When they start to practice professional football is when I'll start to care about his whereabouts on his personal time.

I sort of agree at least about snacks being weird here but I donít have the energy to care that much and will give him the benefit of the doubt. Heís no leader thatís for sure but heís a beast. Fine with me. Iíll say this we better take advantage of his play sooner than later because he doesnít seem long for the nfl. He plays a tough position and seems annoyed lol.

I canít blame players for getting a little pissy when former players blast the team but snacks should have just taken the high road rather than say that kind of shit. And you guys know me I couldnít care less what these guys say to the press or on social media more often than not.

to give anybody the benefit of the doubt (other than maybe Eli) on being ready to play on gameday...its Snacks.

After 3-13, the way it went down with the GM/HC firings, and a divisional foe winning it all, I would have hoped "pure embarrassment" should have gotten everybody into voluntary camp though...

I absolutely agree. He knew the dates, he is supposed to be a professional, fucking act like it and plan your vacation or workout or whatever when your team is NOT together. The off-season is plenty long enough now to do all your personal shit when the team isn't in session.

And I tend to agree that something may be up and in fact, Snacks is the type of guy DG won't stand for if he doesn't go all in. He's very expensive, we drafted two DL and signed one. I would hate to lose him but this shit drives me nuts. SHOW THE FUCK UP.

Is a business for the owners and the players the rules have changed some for the players some are just going by the rules others are still doing the good guy act. In a few years from now these camps may go away completely why because itís not in the interest of the players. Ownership is willing to let the players have more time away from the game so they donít spend more money is this a help or problem for the game who knows. Whatís for sure is that more and more players will start skipping the non mandatory events in the future.

This is true. But when they renegotiate the CBA, they need to establish whatever agreed upon off-season events as mandatory attendance by everyone on the roster... Perhaps a one week mini-camp in May/June to integrate the draftees and free agents?

While I am outraged by Flowers missing, I can't get too worked up when someone as dedicated as Snacks misses even though I agree he should be there. These so called "voluntary" events simply need to be eliminated in the next CBA...
I don't like it either.
mittenedman : 5/3/2018 7:44 am : link
And I hate the "let's see why he's not there" stuff too. The NFL offseason schedule is weak. He's had tons of time off since the end of the season and the CBA makes it very tough to spend any time together so there's not much of an excuse not to be there.

Snacks talks a big game - I remember him making comments how he'd never let anyone slack off around him. And then last year, he basically says he mailed it in when he noticed his teammates weren't all in.

So which is it Snacks? Talking out of both sides of his mouth.

He's a great player and he will be fine, but he needs to be there. Shurmur put it nicely: it's voluntary, but very necessary.
Shurmor said it wasn't an issue
bc4life : 5/3/2018 7:44 am : link
But BBI, or parts of it, are up in arms. Whatever. Once they're over the outrage, the outragees might want to take a look at some of the leadership books and articles.

If you have little ones, you can appreciate the fact that dues to job requirements - you are going to miss out on a lot of those special moments. Ideally, you'd want every player at every event - but, I doubt it is the end of the world as some are making it out to be.

The owners and players can have it both ways. They just need to structure the contracts accordingly. Attach a monetary bonus to every activity. The Players Union can hold firm with the voluntary activities. Players get paid when they show up.

If a player is fringe bottom of the roster, then you don't have to incentivize their participation. Their motivation will be to make the roster and continue their career. Players that are starters with a secure roster spot should be allowed to make their choice. If they miss the work, then they miss the money.

The problem is that these activities are maximized if and only if everyone attends - it is a team game and activities are there to establish team engagement and mutual development. Guys like Snacks/Vernon/Odell will always forego the chump change to attend these events... and that hurts everyone involved. Only solution is to reduce the number of events but make their attendance mandatory.
