NFT: Fellow BBIers....asking for your help

Neckbone1333 : 5/4/2018 8:20 am
Long time BBIer here..

Sorry to be doing this, but I could use some help for my 10 year old.

This is not a serious thing, but it could really help out the confidence of my 10 year old son and his public speaking.

My son gets nervous speaking in front of bigger groups when the focus is all on him. I am thinking most kids go through this at some point.

In any event, my son loves gaming and loves the videos that these guys come out with on YouTube.

I told him he should start his own channel, but he wasn't allowed to put his face on the video. So he did but only recorded videos of his gameplay without sound. Then, he asked me for a microphone, which surprised me, so I bought it for him.

This is his first video with sound. He is dying for people to watch it and comment on it. If you possibly have 4 minutes to spare and feel like watching it and putting quick comment, I think this could go a long way to helping his confidence.

Thanks to all!!
I'll check it out when I get home from work

but not sure this will help him overcome fears of speaking live in front of large groups. Online videos like this are still anonymous and kids know that.

And I think 10 is kind of young anyway IMO to worry about it, but I'm not trying to give parenting advice. You know your kid.

I only base my opinion on my kids. My twins never feared anything, they were in constant competition with each other.

But my youngest also had/has some public speaking fears/nerves (and she's still 10 too), but she was making video stars and music.ly (some ipad apps) videos with her friends non-stop.

Maybe it will, I don't know. My youngest has had a couple book reports or presentations at school and got through it so I haven't thought about it since she mentioned she was nervous.

One thing to look at though, if you want him to become well accomplished at a young age as a public speaker is to find your local toastmastrs group and see if they have a youth program.

My local chapter does.

Can't recommend it enough. So many things in life could depend on a person's ability to communicate and communicate well in a variety of settings.

I will watch when I get home, but the advice here given is golden
Thanks, Guys!

I wanted to give a little clarification, as the public speaking worry, I believe, comes from a little bit of speech dysfluency that he has.

When I heard him do the video, I noticed that there wasn’t much of the dysfluency, so that was encouraging.

Good for him. It took courage for him to do that, I hope he enjoys it and gets something out of it.

My son started youtube when he was 12. he is 22 now. He has a channel that is a Setup/gaming/tech channel. Took a long time for him to get the right niche and traction. Your son would probably like his channel.

Tell your son to keep up the good work and keep rolling out the videos.

does the same thing. I'll send the link to him and I'm sure he will be happy to share with his friends. He's pretty new to it and is really into encouraging others who are also getting started.

speaking to groups and that is to keep doing it. How about doing dry runs where the video doesn't necessarily end up on YouTube. This way, he can work on ideas and get some missteps out of the way before uploading for others to see. See what works and what doesn't. Eventually, enlarge the group and have other friends and family members watch and even sit in when he is creating the video. Repetition will help him get better at it and also allow him to find his voice. Encouragement and positive feedback will help him find his confidence.
Just an update...

I picked him up from school and the first thing he did was ask to borrow my phone so he could see what happened.

When we looked and saw over 100 views, over 12 likes and like 10 comments, he was speechless and almost cried.

He was in awe and immediately said to me "Dad, I can't wait to make the next one, can I do it as soon as we get home?"

Thanks again to all for making his day and supporting him!!

Have a great weekend!
Cute kid. I enjoyed it.

Be glad he still talks to you mine only knows the iphone but he did a great rating a bit hard on himself and the video quality but he is the rater. Don't sweat it to much in five years there's no telling what new inventions will be discovered for all of us remind him of that.
Can't refuse a Dad ...

supporting the development of his young son. Good luck!

I wouldn't worry too much about anxiety when speaking to or in front of large groups - that is very common phobia.
Awesome!

Sounds like that was a special moment.

I wish BBI had a "Thumbs up" button so I wouldn't have to type - Thumbs Up. : )

If you didn't tell me - I would have never known. And I didn't just type that to be nice. I didn't hear anything wrong with his speech.

He is fine and he will be fine.
Done and done

He did a great job. Got better as the video went on.

Public speaking is one of the greatest fears people have. The fact that he acknowledged this was his first video was good and you can tell he was gaining confidence as he went on.

As other have opined, I have no idea how this will carry over to actually speaking in front of a group.

Again, he sounded great.
He sounds more comfortable than I would have

and I'm three times his age and I'm big into gaming and the youtube scene. lol

Good for you for encouraging him with something he enjoys. Not all parents will let their kids play games or upload videos like that but at least you're taking an interest and keeping an eye on what he does. Who knows, maybe it'll turn into a love of video editing or something for him in the future and lead to a potential school/career path. You never know.
