"“He’s the best,” Huxtable raved. “I mean that very seriously. He’s the best. He’s smart. He has a great football IQ and works at the game. He’s tough. There’s not a tougher kid I’ve been around. He’s durable. I think one of his best abilities is his durability. He was never on an injury list."
“You talk about those double-teams and still being able to make a play, he’s strong,” Huxtable said. “He’s just a strong, powerful kid. He’s never going to give up in the fight. B.J. is that guy that fights the fight and makes the other guy quit because the other guy knows B.J. won’t because he has watched him on film.”
“First and second down, the guy is never on the ground,” Doeren said. “He has great feet and is extremely strong. His hands will be in the right place and they’re big. He can control blocks and shed blocks and play primary gaps and secondary gaps if he is asked to. Fundamentally, he is the best inside defensive lineman I’ve seen on a football team I’ve coached.”
“He’s going to be one of the grinders on that team,” Doeren said. “He will establish culture with work ethic, for sure. He will not be afraid to get up and talk in front of the team and say what needs to be said. He is not a cheerleader by any means, but he is a very aware person and understands what good culture is and what bad culture is, and he’ll be able to address situations when he feels like it is time to do it. He will be a positive impact on other people. He’s a very Christian young man that has his life together off the field, and he cares about his teammates and how they’re acting.”
says a lot of good stuff about Hill. At first I thought it probably came out right after the draft and could be a "puff" piece but, it looks like it was published today.
If Hill is half as good as the article portrays him - WE GOT A PLAYER!
We will see though - he is in the big leagues now. The thing I like the most though is his coaches are commenting on things that can't be coached - Attitude, Toughness, Strength, Work Habits, Smarts, etc ...
If they're both going to play de, McIntosh will get some penetration of pass plays. IMO, Hill will only be a 2 down player, though he is stouter against the run.
on what he might do. work ethic, always trying to get better. grinder - and Bettcher is very creative. some interesting pieces on this line.
If he plays DE, which I'm guessing might be his best position - wonder if he could play a little lighter without losing too much strength. 3 cone drill - wow, really athletic.
It's definitely a good problem to have even if this is the minimum outcome.
There is the chance that any of the four players listed in the first two lines will break out this year and in any case, rotation has been needed.
As for who lines up where:
IMO you will see a crazy blend including the much smaller 4/3 DE types (Wynn etc) and the OLBs even as well. Or heavy front 3 (hill, Tomlinson, Harrison) , or super heavy 2 (if an additional true nose makes the roster, not sure any of current group beyond Harrison are in, meaning those well over 320 as a subset) Just a crazy blend.
Then you have 1,000s of variations for third down or long D,D including use of a wide variety of types on front 3, too many to list.
I would see Macintosh. Mauro and even lighter Wynn, etc as situational given the size of today's guards. That said, run blitzing olbs can certainly create havoc even with a smallish but quick 288lb 3/4 de rushing next to them.

Great quote, but frankly I don't care if the guy is Christian, Moselm, Jewish or or Hindu Vaishnavas... so long as he can play, he's the right religion for me.
can watch a player and come our with a very different critique than someone else. The coaching staff loves his strength but NFL profile knocks his strength. Somebody is blind.
with Dalvin Thomlinson BJ Hill McIntosh we have an influx of youth . Hungry players . Getting younger and better in the trenches . Hill will do a lot of the dirty work inside

He is an elite coach.

Is that a good thing ... or a bad thing Jay? IIRC, Cofield was a solid player ... not great though?
He better be much better than Cofield, taken about 55 spots sooner I would hope he is.

Macintosh = Mauro
Harrison > R. Thomas and the gang of bigs

The actual comp that Mayock made when Hill was drafted was Lival, so even better.
Tomlinson/Harrison/Hill

But not an every down two gapper by any means.
So, not Linval. Not a classic nose by any means but could line up near zero and rush just one side, sure, as opposed to holding up both.
More like a Tomlinson 2.0.
Which is good also.

that B.J. Hill is going to be similar to Barry Cofield.

I don't know...if Hill in going to play the 5-tech for us most of the time, I figure a more accurate comp would be Corey Liuget.

Big Giants indeed!

That was a compliment. Cofield was a steal in the 4th and a very underrated player.
