Interesting Sterling Shepard stats.....

sxdxca : 5/5/2018 6:19 pm
In 2017 Shepard played in only 11 games and put up 731 yards.

That averages out to about 66 yards per game.

If he were to have played a full 16 game schedule , that would have given him an additional 330 yards.

If we were to have added those yards to his numbers , means he would have put up a 1,000 yard recieving season.

Seems like a nice addition to our wr corps..

Just wanted to share...
I think he's a very solid player
BestFeature : 5/5/2018 6:27 pm : link
But when he was drafted he had unreal hype and I think it caused some people to sour on him a little when he didn't become Victor Cruz 2.0 as some thought he might be. Very good player, doesn't have the explosiveness we were hoping for.
Love Shepard ....

When the OL starts to give the QB more time this Offense is going to be dangerous.

How long will it take though? Will Eli still be playing when it happens?

I really do like Shepard
Jay on the Island : 5/5/2018 7:01 pm : link
but he is more of a possession slot WR. When he was drafted he was hyped up as the next Giants Steve Smith. I was hoping for more but he is still a solid player.
Thinking/hoping Shepard will really prove himself this year

In an offense where OBJ, EE and Barkley will be the “names” and the pressure off, Shepard could Be a very succesful, move the chains, option. I think he is a great 4th weapon.
OBJ - 1500

Shepard - 1000
Engram - 1000
Saquon - 500

had a respectable rookie season......

But he has to stay on the field, he has to make the tough catches, and take that next step up.....with OBj out, he was just an average WR.....

Putting up <990 yards as the nominal #1 receiver isn't particularly exciting. Shepard has the makings of a nice complementary piece, but let's pump the brakes a bit.

I'm not even sure what the point of this thread is - did you think that we didn't know who Shepard was? Or do you just have a pathological need to start a thread per day?

Gatorade , I feel sorry for you , I really do.

I mean , if you had an IQ above 70 maybe you would have figured out exactly what my post was bringing out.

But that was probably too hard for you.

Secondly , the word "addition" is defined as "anyone or anything added"

So yes , since 2016 when he was drafted , Shepard has been a nice addition to this team.

I hope you have a nice night...

Oh and one more thing, don't think too hard we don't want you burning up too many brain cells , since we know you don't have a whole lot to spare.

Take care big guy

Right, I'm the one lacking IQ and brain cells, while you trotted out daily Davis Webb threads leading up to the draft, recently tried to mount a case in defense of Geno Smith, never post on any threads other than your own streams of consciousness, and can't figure out proper comma usage.

Nice try, little man.

Shepard was 19 th in ypg

And is a quality receiver. There are a lot of notions about him being disappointing as he wasn’t Beckham or Cruz. It’s mostly bunk. Some of you guys expect an all star at every position.

He may be best in the slot but can play outside as well.
Shepard is a good player
Mike from Ohio : 5/6/2018 9:11 am : link
Not every position on the field is going to be a game breaker. He is steady and reliable which is good when you already have a game breaking WR and possibly TE.

I think the "disappointment" come from some fans setting unrealistic expectations for every player we draft. Just go up a couple of threads and you will see discussion about how Lorenzo Carter compares favorably to several first round picks from years past. He is a 3rd round pick, but there will be people who are disappointed in him if he doesn't put up 12 sacks this year because they already believe he is some sort of top shelf pass rusher every other team simply overlooked for some weird reason.

Great players come out of later rounds every draft, and it's cool to be high on incoming rookies. But it also helps to remember guys get passed over for a couple rounds in the draft for a reason. Hope they become stars but realize that those expectations are not completely realistic.

Shepherd is an excellent #2 and complementary slot receiver to Odell. The issue becomes when you lose Odell because Sterling is not an ideal #1 or downfield threat.

That is where a good coach from an X's and O's point comes in. A good coach can scheme things differently to at least in some way minimalize the impact of losing such a player
He is exactly what we thought we were getting
Mike from Ohio : 5/6/2018 9:34 am : link
Some guys fall into the second round because they have elite talent but some part of their game that needs to be improved. Shepard is a guy who is a very good receiver and plays a complete game. He was there in the second because he doesn't have the elite speed/quickness or size of guys who typically go in the first. That is not a knock on him at all. If he continues to play like he has he was well worth the pick.
I'm curious to see ,

my only comment after his first year was he needs to keep his feet under him more, which could lead to bigger plays. Saw some improvement on that in year 2...

Does he have room to grow into Steve Smith?
BestFeature : 5/6/2018 9:50 am : link
Giants version. I think that was the one player he was compared to that was reasonable but some felt he didn't reach that potential, at least yet.
Steve smith
hassan : 5/6/2018 10:11 am : link
Did not have the first two years Shepard had short his super bowl contribution. Steve smith only had one monster year for nyg. I would rather Shepard not have that kind of stat line but rather steadier numbers over a longer period.

Steve smith produced a lot of stats in 09 as the Giants were in flux at position. Bad news if Giants need a guy like Shepard to match that production because it means Barkley and Odell and even engram are injured.
Shep

Just needs to stress the defense horizontally. We have legimate vertical threats in Beckham and engram.

Steve Smith missed eleven regular season games in his first year with a back injury. No surprise he didn't put up big numbers.

In 2008, not only was he playing alongside Plax and Toomer, but in addition to the Giants running the shit out of the ball with Jacobs and Ward, Ward also caught 41 passes. Again, no surprise that Smith didn't put up big numbers.

In 2009, with the losses of both Plax and Toomer, Smith became much more of a focal point for the offense, and then he did put up big numbers.

Gatorade , once again I feel sorry for you.

You attack me because you couldn't figure out why I posted the statistics on Shepard.

Then get all bent out of shape when people other than myself start calling you out for it , and start giving it back to you.

Furthermore when it comes to Davis Webb , who are you to tell me , or anyone else on this board what we can or cannot talk about?

It seems to me you may have some controlling issues.

I would encourage you to possibly get some therapy , take some classes to help improve your IQ , so that you will be able to have a healthy conversation with other people.

And then you won't have to worry about trying to control what other people post or talk about.

Trust me it will help you here , and in the real world
I loved Steve smith

Shepard looks to be better. His ypc improved by 2 yards from year one to year two. He’s a nice and important piece. His ypc in 2017 was better than Steve smith’s best and smith played in a functional offense.

Steve smith was not nearly as productive as Shepard early in his career. If Shepard had the opportunity smith had in 09 he would do as well if not better.

As pointed out Shepard is better and while no burner he’s faster than Smith and can take balls to the house. Smith never had that ability. Smith may have been a slicker route runner but Shepard is a better athlete-significantly so.

Whatever the reasons?

Sure...it's not like missing 70% of the regular season in his rookie year had any bearing on Smith, statistically, and certainly playing in a heavily run-oriented offense in his second year, where he was essentially the third receiving option didn't, either.

Posters like you make me appreciate FMiC, Joey, and chopperhatch more and more each day.

Shepard may be a marginally better athlete - the operative word being "marginally" - but feel free to call me when he has a season that comes close to matching Smith's 2009.
Klaatu
hassan : 5/8/2018 11:00 am : link
seriously with your post? You don't seem to understand some of my points so I'll elaborate.

Smith missed a significant amount of time but produced 250 yards vs Shepard producing well over 700 yards. So his per game stats are probably a wash.

Shepard did so in what was a backwards offensive philosophy with Macadoo on a terrible offense.

Smith did have a very productive 2009 but this was very clearly a result of being the only established receiver on that team. Shepard will never have this opportunity as a player or we should hope not.

Marginally more athletic? Smith could not outrun anyone. A great route runner but zero burst and 'ups', and I cant ever remember him making catches like Shepard did against Dallas in 2016 in his debut or his catch and runs against Philadelphia in 2017. Unless you would like to point out athletic catches Smith made.

So the whole point of the OP and some of the follow ups-people hoping that Shepard would turn out like Smith seems silly as a notion as he is already comparably productive in his per game stats as Smith was at this point in his career. Shepard was 19th in ypg last year-this is very similar to Steve Smith ypg production during 2009-10 when he was in his prime for NYG.

And with regards to your call out, seems incredibly lame and petty, given the drivel I've seen posted here. Make your point with facts and context.

In fact I stand corrected
hassan : 5/8/2018 11:12 am : link
Smith had 63 yards for the year his rookie season. So no comparison to Shepard. But I'll grant its not a fair comparison-he had no targets.

Smith in 2012 received almost 10 targets a game to produce 76 ypg in his peak season. Shepard produced 10 yards less per game last year on more that 2 less targets per game.

And this was on a bad offense vs a very functional one in 2009.
