NFT: Netflix recommendations?

mattyblue : 5/7/2018 8:25 am
Stuck sitting around the next few days, any recommendations on shows/movies to watch? I’d love a good binge show but I think I may have watched most of the bigger names already.

On a side not has anyone noticed the amount of shows they have dubbed into English? A few look really good but I don’t know if it’s worth trying to watch? Watching the trailer on some and I didn’t even realize they were dubbed right away.

Thanks in advance!

Please tell me what you liked about Ozark. I stuck with the entire season, but it was solely because I like Bateman and wanted the show to be good. The story is weak and the characters are odd and unbelievable.

Sci Fi Movie with Amanda Seyfried and Clive Owen. She is a smoke show.

I was a little disappointed in Mind Hunters. It started off very interesting but they got away from the serial killers and just created their own issues to create more drama. I thought those angles were not realistic and annoying. The serial killer aspect is what is really interesting.

i think it's just a reality of TV&movies today that they have to market to both men and women so you get some of those storylines. i didn't think it was over the top a la Gangs of NY where that stupid Cameron Diaz storyline just ruined the whole movie. MindHunters co marketing was manageable.
Lost in Space is pretty good
Tom from LI : 5/7/2018 10:36 am : link
The CG is very good. Nice spin on the original story. Does some flash backs which I am not a fan of but it is necessary for the way the started the show.

A lot of forced humor. My wife comments that the family does stupid things to constantly put themselves in harms way.

I like the way they introduced Dr. Smith's character and Don West. I also liked the story how its not just them that was on their way to Alpha Centuri.

Slow in spots, but it is worth a watch if you like Sci Fi and the original Lost in Space.

Don't get me wrong. I liked the show. I just thought it fell off toward the end. I don't want to have spoilers in here so I won't get into specifics. I am fine with their personal lives being intertwined because it shows how the stress of the job affects that aspect but there was other stuff in there that was just too unbelievable.

as others have said, if you haven't already done it.

Premise in season 1 is: you are in post WWI Brimingham. There are three main factions, 1) the local crime-gang familys, 2)The IRA, 3) local organizing communists. In the middle of all this, a huge shipment of machine guns bound for the front lines goes missing. It's great!
Broadchurch season 1 was terrific

I watch mostly sports and HBO or Showtime, but my 10 year old daughter loves the Goldbergs so we watch that on Wednesday nights together. the family in the show are philly sports fans which sucks and it's not comedy most on here would appreciate, but I like the old-school sitcom style and the father daughter bonding time. The Middle too on Tuesdays we watch together.

I look forward to 8pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, since she finds both shows entertaining.
Thanks

Also, weird that Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu all seem to offer the same movies...wish there was more diversity and more of the older classics.

Mixed emotions about that. They do have some excellent original series, but it's become so cluttered lately with obscure projects, lots of foreign movies and series, it just become too much. Just too much to sort out when I'm trying to find something.

Are you certain of that Eric ? It seems like they're adding a couple of new shows every week. Its not necessarily their own content but it is stuff that would otherwise not be available to American viewers.
There's new stuff all the time on Netflix

Ron from Ninerland : 5/7/2018 5:06 pm : link
I'm probably one of the few people here old enough to have watched the Original Lost in Space. Even though I was only 10 years old at the time I thought it was a stupid show, but with an interesting concept. That, and it was the only Sci Fi on TV until Star Trek came along. Among the problems with that show is that after the first few episodes it became silly. It was also annoying that no matter how badly Dr. Smith screwed up and endangered the family he was always forgiven. The Robinson family dynamic was the same as that of Ward and June Cleaver. Another thing lacking in the original was a back story. Why did the Robinsons leave Earth ? Who was Dr. Smith ? There was a hint that he was a Soviet controlled spy but they never went into it.

I've watched the first four episodes of the new Lost in Space. Everything that was wrong with the original has been corrected. The tension level as I watch this show is as high as anything I've ever seen on TV. Through flashbacks the back story behind the characters is being revealed. Dr. Smith who was a bumbling villain in the first is a terrifying sociopath here. The Robinson family dynamic displayed here is something that is believable in 2018. The role of the Robot is also completely different, but I can't discuss that without revealing a spoiler.

As for Cobra Kai, I agree with everybody here that this is a winner. There are a couple of significant things about this show. 1) Google has quietly been releasing original content on YouTube Red for a couple of years but its been all amateurish crap up until now. If Google is now going to become a player as an original content producer its good for everybody. 2) They've discovered a formula of success previously known only to Disney: Even if the story takes place in the present or the future ( Guardians of the Galaxy ) find an excuse to put in an 80's soundtrack.

I check out their newly-added every other week or so... it doesn't seem to change much.

I get frustrated because there are certain movies that I want to see again or want my kids to watch, and I figure they would be on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime but they aren't. For example, why are none of the Alfred Hitchcock movies on there ever? Weird. And somethings come and go... the Bond movies will be on there then disappear then come back. And what's weird is every now and then I'll find an older movie from the 80s or 90s I want to see again, and it's on all three at the same time. I just wish their was more variety. I get paying for the newer movies but the old ones?
It comes down to licensing
UConn4523 : 5/7/2018 6:22 pm : link
regardless of how old a movie is. Netflix would need to buy them outright in order to always have them in their library and I’m guessing he demand just isn’t there to justify it.
Wind River - Excellent movie

Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen and Jon Bernthal. Same writer/director as Hell or High Water, same feel/vibe as that movie as well. A local tracker helps an out-of-her element FBI agent solve the murder of a native american teenage woman on the Wind River reservation.

Great show recs on here as well. Loved Dark. Mindhunters and Altered Carbon excellent as well.

Yeah, I figured as much. But it's frustrating. Because I'll get in the mood for some movie (can be 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc.), search for it, and find that it isn't on any of the platforms. Every now and then, I find a gem.

It's better for the series that you can binge watch. I actually thank BBI for turning me on to some series I would have otherwise missed. I just wish they had a wider selection of movies.
Before they had shows
UConn4523 : 5/7/2018 7:05 pm : link
their library was excellent but millennials only want mass amounts of shows to “binge” so thats where their dollars go towards.

In 5-10 years I wouldn’t be surprised if there were several companies going to a Disney route, completely breaking off and having their full libraries on their own service.
If you want movies, you might think about Starz
Gary from The East End : Admin : 5/7/2018 7:25 pm : link
It's only nine bucks a month, if you don't have cable, and there's a ton of old and new movies on there.

If you're looking for a specific movie, justwatch.com is great. It will tell you which, if any, streaming services are showing that film and where you can buy or rent it if it's available.

Flint town on Netflix. It follows the lives of several police officers in Flint Michigan. Very interesting stuff about what might be the most screwed up city in America. If you're looking for something uplifting however, look elsewhere

Watch this shit. Its the anti virus guy. Its gonna blow your mind. Some of you who follow the news ultra closely may already know some of the backstory. I came in with no idea other than he was a familiar name because lf the anti virus stuff. His story is nuts, from his life to his possible crimes to his kinky sexual expolits (omg what a damn weirdo) its a crazy crazy story. And to this day he seems just as crazy/dangerous
For older movies, your best bet is Turner Classic Movies
