NFT: Beginner Golf Clubs

Hi all,

I have a 8th grade son who is putting aside baseball and considering trying to transition into golf as he enters high school (read: he's not good enough to make the high school team, lol).

He's got a kid's set he's outgrown (we went out 4-5 times to a course, maybe ten to the range) and I'm looking to get him a decent starter set that he can learn with and then, if he shows real interest, I'll replace it with a better set. So, entry level pricing is key - in case he fizzles out.

Any good recommendations? Would be willing to buy irons, woods, bag separate but all in one would also be nice. Prefer to keep it all under $400 and I have an extra bag I can use.

Thanks in advance BBI!
You can go on Amazon and find a complete set for $2-400

My buddy is just starting out and went with the "Callaway Men's Strata Complete Golf Club Set with Bag (12-Piece)"

Pretty decent starter set.
How tall is he? or How tall are you/do you project he will be?

I would recommend used good adult clubs, especially if he's already 5'7 or taller.
Try Calloway Pre Owned

I did well there.

I have this set and can attest that it is great value for $220.
Good question. He's 5'7" now

Probably will be 5-10 to 6ft? Hasn't really hit puberty yet, so hard to say. I'd get an adult set for sure, because he could hit a spurt and be adult sized pretty damn quick.

Thanks for this. I was eyeing these and it's good to have someone who has seen or used them give them thumbs up.
Yeah, your son is at a prime age
beatrixkiddo : 5/7/2018 12:10 pm : link
where he will soon quickly outgrow the clubs you get him. If your looking for something temporary, I'd look for something used as your likely to get the best clubs for the price. I found my first set on craigslist, still carry the driver and picked up a few woods at sports swaps, and garage sales. Finally got fitted for irons as a B-day present to myself last year (highly recommend) which have improved my game tremendously, but that is something you won't need for your son until he is fully grown. So, IMO I'd check out some local shops, craigslist, facebook marketplace, etc. and see what you can find, you will be surprised at how you can get practically brand new clubs for dirt cheap. I wouldn't recommend anything brand new, I don't care for the starter sets even though you could go that route.

Thanks! I hadn't thought about facebook/craigslist. I'll look. One wrinkle - he's a damn lefty which will greatly reduce the pool of used clubs available.
Well

If you have to buy new clubs, at least you will find the best bargains for lefty clubs. Some buddies of mine swear by https://www.rockbottomgolf.com . But yeah, definitely check your local listings first. It's much cheaper to replace some grips on a used set of clubs, than buying new clubs that will likely be outgrown in a short amount of time, just my two cents.

I bought the same Srata set last Summer. It works fine for me but I'm a pretty bad golfer despite playing off and on for the last 20 years.
Buy something used
cjac : 5/7/2018 1:27 pm : link
and i agree with Callaway, they make really good forgiving irons.
callaway
emcca005 : 5/7/2018 1:33 pm : link
is a great beginner brand, they have varying qualities so you can find stuff fairly cheap. Adams is in the same mold. As he grows he'll need longer clubs or different shafts so I wouldn't spend too much right now. If he gets to be good to very good in the long run is when you want to move away from Callaway and into upper echelon brands. The guy that sells to you will probably try to push you into this right away (I worked in the industry for a few years so where you're buying can create a completely different experience (DSG or online vs a pro shop)
get a used set
BronxBombers : 5/7/2018 1:36 pm : link
he will outgrow them and if he chooses against golf, you're not out much money...im 36, and scratch, and i would recommend used to anyone because there are golfers who buy new and dont like them, you can get a good deal...

True Story
NNJ Tom : 5/7/2018 3:10 pm : link
My dad grew up in the 30s when left handed clubs cost a lot more than right handed clubs (not sure why?). Anyway, he was a pretty good athlete so he just decided to learn how to play right handed.

His baseball mit is a lefty and he wrote left handed. He played musical instruments right handed and he shot riffles right handed. He had the army to thank for that one, they only taught right handed in basic for WWII.
I had a set that I replaced
Gman11 : 5/7/2018 3:12 pm : link
and tried to sell for $50 on Craig's List. No takers.

Go there or Facebook marketplace. You'll find a good set of used clubs for $100 or less.
Put money into lessons
yalebowl : 5/7/2018 3:24 pm : link
Money would be better spent on lessons than clubs. Time spent practicing on the driving range also is better.

In terms of clubs graphite is better than the stiff shafts (usually lighter).

Definitely doing lessons. That's a given. I'm just hoping for a set of clubs that can get him to the point where his clubs are holding him back and not his baseball swing. That will be a while for sure.
Lots of good info and ideas here. Thanks!

Baseball and Golf are a terrible mix
beatrixkiddo : 5/7/2018 3:50 pm : link
I had to quit playing in my softball beer leagues when golf season was around, throws off all your muscle memory. He will get over it quick as long as he sticks with golf, and away from baseball. Good luck!

Phil Mickelson is a righty.

I'm going to second this idea - I've bought lots of stuff from them and it's always good.
