Hi all,
I have a 8th grade son who is putting aside baseball and considering trying to transition into golf as he enters high school (read: he's not good enough to make the high school team, lol).
He's got a kid's set he's outgrown (we went out 4-5 times to a course, maybe ten to the range) and I'm looking to get him a decent starter set that he can learn with and then, if he shows real interest, I'll replace it with a better set. So, entry level pricing is key - in case he fizzles out.
Any good recommendations? Would be willing to buy irons, woods, bag separate but all in one would also be nice. Prefer to keep it all under $400 and I have an extra bag I can use.
Thanks in advance BBI!
Pretty decent starter set.

I have this set and can attest that it is great value for $220.

My buddy is just starting out and went with the "Callaway Men's Strata Complete Golf Club Set with Bag (12-Piece)"

Thanks for this. I was eyeing these and it's good to have someone who has seen or used them give them thumbs up.
Thanks! I hadn't thought about facebook/craigslist. I'll look. One wrinkle - he's a damn lefty which will greatly reduce the pool of used clubs available.
Pretty decent starter set.
I bought the same Srata set last Summer. It works fine for me but I'm a pretty bad golfer despite playing off and on for the last 20 years.
His baseball mit is a lefty and he wrote left handed. He played musical instruments right handed and he shot riffles right handed. He had the army to thank for that one, they only taught right handed in basic for WWII.
Go there or Facebook marketplace. You'll find a good set of used clubs for $100 or less.
In terms of clubs graphite is better than the stiff shafts (usually lighter).

Definitely doing lessons. That's a given. I'm just hoping for a set of clubs that can get him to the point where his clubs are holding him back and not his baseball swing. That will be a while for sure.

Phil Mickelson is a righty.
I'm going to second this idea - I've bought lots of stuff from them and it's always good.
