Saints cut Fleener

BigBlueDownTheShore : 5/7/2018 2:42 pm
he was a prospect many people here were interested in at one time.
i think his career may be over

The drum banging for this guy was loud.

Fleener

Killed the Giants a few years ago with the Colts when they neglected to cover him
Guy was always injured
NYG27 : 5/7/2018 2:46 pm : link
Plus when healthy, he wasn't that good with either Andrew Luck or Drew Brees throwing to him.
Concussion history...

but worth a workout...

Um, huh? He was actually pretty good with the Colts.
I was all over him

I thought he'd be a star in the league. But football's a tough sport.
Swing and a miss

I loved him entering the NFL.

On the Colts he showed skill and promise.

Saints gave him a big deal.

And then he just seemed to play like a guy who didn’t care. Half assed it with a perfect scenario around him to thrive. He ran routes like he didn’t care and didn’t fight for 50/50 balls. Brees gave up on him.

Based on the guy we saw in NO, I wouldn’t give him a minimum deal.

He's a TE. Of course, they didn't cover him. That was their defensive plan for a long time.

Wait. You mean they didn't do it on purpose?
Pass

Injury riddled career for a guy who is getting up there. Absolute terrible blocker and we have some depth at TE.

NYG was right. He wasn't very good, even when healthy. Dropped balls, bad routes, bad efforts. I had no idea about him coming into the NFL, but as soon as I saw him play, I was extremely unimpressed. If you can't have a lot of success with the Colts/Luck and Saints/Brees, than that says it all. Extremely inconsistent too.
If he was an undrafted player
djm : 5/7/2018 4:36 pm : link
He was ok. For where he was drafted? He was pretty sucky.
He had 4 50-catch seasons, 3-600+ yard seasons...
Dunedin81 : 5/7/2018 4:41 pm : link
At a position notoriously tough on the body. He was a high 2nd round pick, that's hardly a bust resume.

Yes it was. And it seemed like going to the colts was perfect. But it never really worked out.

It's not a good resume either. Here's something to put this into perspective.

Coby Fleener
34th pick of his draft.
87 NFL games, 422 targets, 255 receptions, 3,080 yards, 22TD
12.1 yards per reception

Player X
153rd pick of his draft.
74 NFL games, 251 targets, 150 receptions 2033 yards, 22TD.
13.6 yards per reception

Player X is former Giant Kevin Boss.

Getting cut doesn’t mean his career is over

Someone will pick him up

Comment was made that there was a concussion history, but "worth bringing in for a tryout."

Not sure what the tryout is supposed to demonstrate. Are we testing to see whether he can at least run without foot pounding reverberations causing additional concussions?
Any Odd Couple (Klugman/Randall) fans here?

Every time I hear CF’s name, I think of Felix’s “Nobody’s cleaner than Mildred Fleener.” It’s like a lousy song or jingle you sometimes cannot get out of your head. :)
Evan Engram is a better version of what many hoped Fleener would be

I get that, but keep in mind some of the alternatives never even reached that rarified air. David Wilson is of course out of the league. AJ Jenkins is out of the league, as is Stephen Hill and Brian Quick might as well be. Alshon Jeffrey is great, Cordy Glenn is too, Janoris Jenkins has certainly recouped value, but Courtney Upshaw is a rotational player, Johnathan Martin has retired. A respectable career, which is what Fleener has had, is a decent return for a second rounder in this day and age.

Sounds and looks Ruben randlish to me. I was never a big fan of fleener. Never made any wow plays but he put up some ok numbers in good offenses. He was ok at best. Not embarrasingly bad or anything but not good either.
