What would Reese's draft have looked like?

Damfino : 5/8/2018 11:23 am
If this has already been discussed I will delete.
I wonder what Parcells' draft would have looked like
YAJ2112 : 5/8/2018 11:29 am : link
or George Young's.
It's easy to pick at the top of each rd
QB Snacks : 5/8/2018 11:29 am : link
I think if Mcadoo were here he would have pushed for a QB
Good question - here's my best guess
Eric on Li : 5/8/2018 11:30 am : link
1. Sam Darnold
2. Connor Williams
3. Lorenzo Carter
4. Mark Walton
4b. Tim Settle
5. Tyrell Crosby
6. Deshon Elliot

(that's assuming no Ogletree & JPP trades)

Those were all "name picks" that fit a lot of the criteria Reese has drafted in the past - premium positions, junior entries, big schools. I'm sure he would have made a couple out of nowhere picks too.
he definitely wouldve take Saquon

who cares? haevn't you seen enough?

My guess would be Josh Allen at #2

Lorenzo Carter seems like a round 2 Reese selection.

No oline until the 6th or 7th round.
Not sure,
Big Blue '56 : 5/8/2018 12:04 pm : link
but picking at #2 is a helluva more of a no-brainer than picking out of the top 10 or within the top 10 at 9, imo.

You’re ALMOST draft proof

two firsts and a 2nd round pick on OL in his last 5 drafts, why no OL until the 5th/6th round?

He didn't ignore the OL (even if he addressed it late) his picks did not pan out.

there is a big difference, and I'm not saying which is worse, but the narrative of Reese neglecting the line is off.
Ogbonnia Okoronkwo

Would have been a Giant.
Since it surely would have been his "last chance" Reese

would have finally traded down to garner as many picks as possible to improve on all the positions he fk'd up while he has been GM over the years...

According to FA he was 2 for 3. So he wasn't that bad at drafting them high. He just neglected to do it enough for how bad he was in FA.

If you even 1/2 watched Reese's draft you know he was a HUGE "potential" guy. Look at his drafts and over and over again he took chances on those types of players. A few succeed (JPP) and all too many flamed out (Hosley, Robinson just to name two).

Josh Allen was so much a tailor made Reese pick, it isn't even funny.
Reese would not have traded for Ogletree or dealt JPP
Mike in NY : 5/8/2018 12:25 pm : link
Round 1 - Josh Allen
Round 2 - Lorenzo Carter
Round 3 - Nyheim Hines
Round 4 - DaeSean Hamilton
Round 4b - R.J. McIntosh
Round 5 - Dane Cruikshank
Round 6 - Desmond Harison or Jaryd Jones-Smith
given that Reese and Mac
Beer Man : 5/8/2018 12:59 pm : link
were both throwing Eli under the bus, I'm guessing the first pick would have been one of the mobile QBs. Beyond that, its hard to say.
Reese uses this opportunity to start his own dynasty and
Rory : 5/8/2018 1:29 pm : link
drafts Sam Darnold to replace Eli and give himself job security while making Eli the scapegoat

Trades Eli for 2019 2nd round pick

Reese never trades JPP so no DE needed. Keeps Wing, keeps Marshal. Also Reese over spends and signs Andrew Norwell. Keeps Flowers at LT, promotes Wheeler to RT, Resigns Richburg

Reese prob moves up and drafts one of the olineman in the 2nd maybe even Hernandez, unwilling to risk it. Costs a 4th

With 3rd pick WR, 5th Rb (ugh), 6th DT

Reese did eventually move onto to the need reach pick and I'm smarter than everyone else pick towards the end of his tenure.

Thanks for posting this. I have read a lot about how Reese ignored the line, and nothing could be further from the truth. He drafted poorly when it comes to the Oline, but he most certainly did not ignore it during the draft.
What would have happened, people would be bitching that

Just to provide some facts,

From 2005 thru 2012, the only Offensive Lineman drafted with any of the first 3 picks was Will Beatty. That's 8 drafts...and one guy with a "premium" pick.

This just in...he ignored it.
Reese would have drafted Chubb.

Definitely Darnold. After that you need to throw in 2 corners and a reach athlete.
he would have taken Orlando Brown

This post nearly gave me a panic attack.
Reese would have reached deep for need...
the mike : 5/8/2018 4:57 pm : link
Assuming no trades, Reese would have looked at the team and ranked our needs. Based on where we are most desperate, he would have concluded that we needed the following: OT, Edge, OG, CB, DT, WR. He would then have picked the highest graded player by position... which would have led to a severe series of reaches (actual pick position in parentheses):

#2. OT McGlinchey (#9)
#34. Edge Landry (#41)
#66. OG Madison (#138)
#69. CB Gaulden (#85)
#108. DT McIntosh (#139)
#139. WR Fountain (#159)

When you backtest the picks based on "reaching for need" as compared to "best player available", you realize how badly you undernourish your team for years to come. From 2012-2015, of the 27 players selected, only three remain on this team. Once Flowers leaves, that will leave just Beckham and Collins. Both have been excellent high impact pro bowl type players, but that is just a 7% hit rate! Way too low to succeed in this league.

We simply must have 2-3 draftees every year developing into high impact pro bowl players or we will remain mediocre at best. I am hopeful that we may have three high impact players in Gettleman's first draft - Barkley, Hernandez and Carter... Time will tell, but if it happens, it is because of Gettleman's best player available strategy...
He would have taken Darnold
UberAlias : 5/8/2018 5:31 pm : link
The scouts liked him and Reese was not all in on Eli like this current group.
My guess would be a QB and more WR
LauderdaleMatty : 5/8/2018 6:09 pm : link
And a corner in the first 3 No not kidding. OL yeah. Maybe Zero chance JPP traded

hahaha - through 2012? Why did you stop there randomly?

From 2013-2015, two of our three first round picks were offensive linemen. In 2014, the second round pick was an offensive lineman.

This just in...you need to look at all the facts, not just the ones you like.
It wasn't random. Its well documented that we had to go
Jimmy Googs : 5/9/2018 6:11 pm : link
Offensive Line those years as we were desperate for starters on the line since it was IGNORED in ALL THE YEARS I PROVIDED YOU.

So much that we had to start Flowers at LT when he wasn't ready....how did that work out? We had to plug Pugh all over the place to fill holes...he may not have been that good but at least he was flexible. And even Richburg has to fill in a Guard before going to his natural Center position.

If you feel the draft is for desperation moves versus sound long term planning...well, than I stipulate that only you and Jerry Reese feel he didn't ignore the line...

This looks a lot like a Reese draft. I also think he definitely would have gone QB, I just think he would have gone with the "cleanest" prospect (Darnold). My only point of contention is I think he would have gone with Connor Williams.
