Did Gettleman sign the next Andrew Norwell?

YANKEE28 : 5/11/2018 12:04 am
Today starts the NFL career of 3 UDFA offensive linemen for the Giants.

Norwell was considered a Day Three prospect back in 2014, but went undrafted after playing for a major college program-Ohio State. Norwell really impressed in camp. Enough to make the final 53, and to be named a starter in Game 7.

The Giants have signed 3 UDFA players with a similar background. Each played at a major school-Nebraska, SMU, and Missouri.

1.Evan Brown-Center, SMU 6'2 1/2" 302 pounds

Steady starter for SMU, who shocked many with his Pro Day where he had a 36 inch vertical, and lifted the bar 36 times. Gettleman has talked about finding interior offensive linemen with a strong lower trunk, and Brown certainly has that.

2.Nick Gates, guard/tackle Nebraska 6' 5 3/8" 307 pounds

Three year starter with his soph season at right tackle and final 2 years at left tackle. A Combine invite that went undrafted. Some articles have speculated the Giants plan to move him inside.

3.Tyler Howell-tackle Missouri 6' 8 3/8" 323 pounds.

Massive tackle with 10 1/2 inch hands, 35 5/8 inch arms and a wingspan of over 86 inches. Howell started his college career at Butler Community College. Was considered in the nation's Top 5 community college O Lineman after the 2015 season before has transfer to Missouri. Played two seasons at left tackle for Missouri. Speculation is that the Giants will be moving Howell to the right side from day one.

Who will become the next Gettleman Hog Molly find?
I'm guessing

The guy with the best feet, best technique, and Hayes to lose.
Without Pro/,Con scouting reports I have no clue but I'll guess Brown.

Hayes s/,b hates.
And I meant Gate...had the body on the wrong guy.

Would love it

If one or two of them work out.

That Howell guy has Phil Loadholdt size.

Something to keep an eye on.
Money talks, and Brown got the biggest guarantee..
Big Blue Blogger : 5/11/2018 4:37 am : link
$20K is spare change for the team, but it's the best indicator we have of the priority NYG placed on each UDFA. If Brown can add some good weight, he has a shot at an NFL career.

All three linemen appear to need at least a year in an NFL program before they should see the field. Howell reminds me of Michael Bamiro, who spent some time with the Giants after making news with a big UDFA salary guarantee from the Eagles: the massive frame projects to the NFL, but for every Andrew Norwell there are at least a dozen guys who never even make a roster.
Brown should push jones for the starting center spot

Ross tucker is a big fan of brown. Nick gates to me has a weak base from what I’ve seen but an nfl weight room can do wonders

Read articles on Gates that believed he came out a year earlier than he should have & that physically he is not ready. As the above poster said, weight room & a years' apprenticeship on the practice squad could do wonders!
Of the three - Evan Brown

I only watched a few games but the one that impressed me most was against Houston. He did a pretty good job with Ed Oliver. Does a good job getting set, moves well laterally, he's good in space and at the second level. And from what I saw has a good feel for blitz pickup. Reminds me a little of Jason Kelce. Similar built and struggles getting push run blocking but should excel in NYGs inside and outside zone blocking schemes. He has a good shot making the 53.

We are due for someone to come out of the UDFA ranks

Maybe overdue...
Howell seems like a really good dude
Andy in Halifax : 5/11/2018 7:40 am : link
Which also seems like a theme. Rumors of a terrible OL room, maybe DG said enough is enough and placed a premium on character.

There's a few cutups of Howell out there too. Doesn't react to quickness well, but seemed fairly effective.
Tyler Howell - ( New Window )
All 3 could possibly make the team

As Pat Shurmur put it: "Dave Gettleman loves to scout Offensive Linemen."

I'm psyched to see what happens. All of them are interesting - I'd pick Gates as the most likely to surprise but maybe Evan Brown has some Shaun O'Hara-like qualities.
Wheeler
mittenedman : 5/11/2018 8:13 am : link
is also a very interesting player. He's got good feet and knee bend. His hands & strength needed work and we know he's done at least 1 of those.

I was used to "regularly" picking up good players in the 3rd round and below, I have a feeling we'll get back to that.

It's mind boggling to think higher ups in the Giants wanted to cut Victor Cruz.
Howell
Tuckrule : 5/11/2018 8:52 am : link
He is not an nfl offensive tackle. Slow feet and will never make it to the second level. Saw enough film on him to see his blocking at the second level is well below average. You can’t teach quickness.

Doomster : 5/11/2018 9:29 am : link
After years of failure in the draft and free agency, maybe just maybe, we are finally headed in the right direction....but it's not going to happen overnight.....it will be better, but an infusion of new bodies takes time to come together as a unit...

The sobering thought is, what could Eli have done, if he had an OL and running game in front of him, these past 6 seasons?

Are you stu-stu-stupid or something? We'll probably never know, but my theory is Reese, Cruz has average-poor measurable and Coughlin holds onto BC players for dear life.

but I give GM's virtually no credit when a late rd or UDFA become studs.

The Gm essentially evaluated the player incorrectly and was just lucky the rest of the league did the same.

The scouts deserve most of the in these scenario's.
*most of the credit
Jay on the Island : 5/11/2018 10:19 am : link
The Giants once had Cameron Wake here as an UDFA but his name was Derek at the time. Every team missed on him and he wasn't impressive here. He was cut and replaced by Chase Blackburn as a late UDFA add. Some of these kids are either late bloomers or they just need better coaching or time to get stronger.

Good point with regard to the $20K bonus.

The size of the bonus suggests to me that the Jints may have had some competition for his services.

It is always good to know that another NFL valued the services of the guy we wanted.

Of course you have to give the GM credit for finding UDFA. It's not like they just pick a name out of a hat. They probably have tons of players they want to draft, but you only have 6-8 picks on avg. Once you get to the back-end, there are guys with tons of question marks, but the ability to see past them and get the best players, I give them even more credit for those picks.
Really like Brown and Gates...
GuzzaBlue : 5/11/2018 10:59 am : link
Brown could be a nice find. Does not have the typical size, but seems to play with good leverage and is very strong for his size and athletic as well.

My bad. Makes sense, if he went to BC we would have drafted him first round.

great analysis and I agree with the comp. If he ends up anything close to Kelce it will be quite the find. Hoping the zone blk system helps him excel.

Interesting way to look at it. If and only if all draft picks are better than the gem UDFA, can you give the GM credit. Yep.
Well, there's opportunity for OL here at the Giants
Heisenberg : 5/11/2018 11:36 am : link
If I were a guy who feels like he should start, coming to the Giants makes a lot of sense because the line is not set in stone. The Giants are looking for building blocks.

Brown seems like the most likely to make the team given the roster and if Gates shows the ability to backup RT or G, he's next.

Howell looks like a practice squad longshot at this point.

But we won't know about any of them until they put pads on and start hitting.

OL
stretch234 : 5/11/2018 12:45 pm : link
How many OL are they going to keep - usually it is 9. on game days usually only 7 are active

Here is the list of OL

Solder
Hernandez
Jones
Omaneh
Flowers
Wheeler
Jerry
Greco
Halapio
Bisnatoway

that is 10 above, plus the UDFA, etc, Becton, Brown, Cooper, Gates, Howell, Sokoli

I think they will keep 9. The locks are Solder, Omameh, Jones, Hernandez, Flowers(unless traded), Wheeler. That leaves 3 spots between Gates, Jerry, Bisnowaty, Greco, Halapio, Brown. We could see a veteran C or OT signed at the end of cuts but as of today I think the backup OL will be Wheeler, Jerry, Halapio, Gates. Brown could beat out Halapio as the backup center with a good camp but will likely go to the practice squad.
