UDFA Question?

mushroom : 5/11/2018 7:20 am
Does anyone know the success rate by position of UDFAs in the NFL?
A good question but how do you define success?
Ivan15 : 5/11/2018 8:02 am : link
Making a roster eventually?
Making a roster in the first year?
Being on a roster for 2 years, 4 years?
About two per team
smokeybandit : 5/11/2018 8:07 am : link
It varies of course, but it's usually around 2 per team each year, give or take.
Making the roster

And being a key contributor if not solid starter.

Every once in a while, someone delites.

Usually, more fanfare beforehand....then it turns out.

For that matter, similar with the drafted players. They are all great addition before, during and right after draft....on game day, not as much.
Giants seem to usually

have a few make the team each year. Hope one of these Oline guys pan out

Yes it is usually the well known UDFA's that almost never pan out but unknown players like Seubert, Cruz, etc surprise.
This Thread Got Me Thinking About Past Giants' Drafts...
Jim in Tampa : 5/11/2018 10:56 am : link
Back in the day when the NFL Draft went more than 7 rounds.

Granted in those years there were fewer teams (sometimes a lot fewer) but here are some Giants' finds after RD 7:

8th Round
Jesse Armstead LB
Willie Williams DB
Billy Ard G
Andy Headen LB
Myron Guyton DB
Lee Rouson RB
Kent Graham QB

9th Round
Byron Hunt LB
Pat Hughes LB
Ali Haji Sheikh K

10th Round
Rich Baldinger OT

11th Round
George Martin DE
Ernie Koy RB

12th Round
Herb Welch S
Tom Blanchard P
Matt Stover K*
Mike Landsford K*

13th Round
Spider Lockhart S

14th Round
Brian Kelley LB

19th Round
Buck Buchanan DE*

20th Round
Homer Jones WR

* Never played for the Giants

Again, there were fewer teams so some of those players would have been drafted in the first 7 rounds if there were 32 teams and comp picks when they were coming out. However, many of them still would have been UDFA in a 7 round draft.

Also a few notes about the 1963 draft (even though it was before my time).

The Giants had no 1st RD pick and their 3rd RD pick never played pro ball.

Eight of their twenty picks signed with the AFL and none of the top 19 picks was on the team after 3 seasons.

But at the end of that crappy draft the Giants drafted Buck Buchanan in the 19th RD and Homer Jones in the 20th.

If just one of our FA signings comes close to those two or any of the players listed above, I'll be happy.

Since no one else has answered the actual question...

My best guess is that it's interior OL, RBs, WRs, and safeties who are most likely to stick as UDFA.

Also FB is an obvious one.

before the 1st game of the 2016 season, I heard a stat that there were 480 first or second draftees among them, and 481 undrafted.
Shaun O'Hara was undrafted by Cleveland....
Milton : 5/11/2018 2:02 pm : link
...before coming the Giants as a free agent.
p.s.--my goal is for us to put together a list of these guys for the last 25-30 years and then let's see how it breaks down by position.

I think Brett Jones was more like a standard UFA. IIRC, he was signed before the draft, but I could be mistaken.

Actually Milton - I am wrong - you did start. Jim had another criteria.

No offense to Jim in Tampa, but he went back way too far and didn't list any players from the period of time that is much more relevant to the question at hand. This isn't about the guys who were 12th round picks in 1975, it's about the guys who went undrafted in 2005 (and what positions did they play?).
Another UDFA
