The expectations for Barkley are high. He insists he's not buying into the hype. He doesn't pay attention to expectations set by outsiders. He has set his own expectations -- and they're admittedly high. "My expectations for myself right now would be to continue to come in, be humble," Barkley said. "I don't want to be that guy that's viewed as he thinks he's a high draft pick and he got it all. "Nothing's given to you; everything's earned. I have that mindset that you have to work for every single thing, learn every single day, be a student of the game, learn from the guys, the coaches, learn from [Eli Manning] and [Odell Beckham] on the field and off the field. Work, be a worker." |
While I wanted Darnold with the pick Barkley has already won me over. I didn't really give it much thought how dangerous this offense could be with Beckham, Barkley, and Engram. I think that this guy will transform the offense which will have a huge impact on Eli's performance. We will all soon realize how much of Eli's career was wasted by not providing him a great running game and OL over the past 7 years.

He has a great head on his shoulders. I can't believe how many people are against this pick. This dude is a phenomenal football player and is going to be so fun to watch. He will make this offense much better.

That's really the big thing with Eli for me...
I can and have acknowledged that he's clearly declined a bit - he's 37 - it'd be weird if he hadn't. I was also on board with taking a QB if that was the direction we chose.
But no one can deny that Eli has had very few of the things that most QB's need to succeed. Including adequate protection and a true threat in the backfield.
If we're going to keep rolling with Eli, they had to give him some help in both areas.
We signed Solder, Omameh, drafted Hernandez, scooped up a few other camp bodies, and still have guys like Wheeler who could eventually become solid depth or even a decent starter if things go right.
While I don't ever expect Eli to have another 2011-esque campaign, I would be willing to bet that he proves a lot of people wrong this year and shows that he's still got something left.

I don't think anyone doubts he has something left, I think most people are thinking we shouldn't hang on to something for to long, before it falls apart.
It's better to cut someone a year to soon, instead of a year to late.

That's a joke, right? BBI has been littered with posters over the last 2 years who think exactly that.

Denver might have never won a SB if they employed that logic.
The last thing any NFL team wants to do is dump a QB too soon if he can still play. With a player like Eli, as much as people aren't going to want to hear this, I think it's the right move to make sure he's finished before we really move on.
He might be.. but his cast was far too poor to know that last year.
If Eli still looks like trash even with Barkley and a better line, we'll know and can start preparing for life after Eli. And it's not like we have no other options.. there are two young QB's sitting behind him now. The odds of both panning out are extremely small - but one of them definitely could. Especially with Pat Shurmur.
But for now, I think it's probably worth sticking with Eli a bit longer to see where he can get us with a better cast.

Well that is clearly the approach and Eli has earned the opportunity. Webb and Lauletta will benefit from sitting and learning behind Eli who is as good a mentor as you could ask for. At least the preseason games will be more entertaining with Webb and Lauletta getting most of the reps.

Even if cutting him costs 17.4 against the cap? I think he deserves one more audition year to see if he plays the final year of his deal and gives Webb and Lauletta all the time they need.
You could argue the Pats just took the opposite route sticking with Brady and trading Garoppolo. And the Broncos held onto Elway just long enough.
Didn't work for either side in the Philly/McNabb divorce.

He was going to play for the Giants in 2018 no matter what.

How did it work for the Colts? Peyton took the Broncos to the AFC championship game that year and if it weren't for a boneheaded play by their safety Rahim Moore they would have been in the SB.
Yup, agree 100%.

Fair enough. They did get Luck, though they haven't won it all with him. If they had opted to stick with Peyton, they probably trade that pick or grab someone else that could've helped them make another run.

Luck has willed that team to wins. He has had a worse Oline then Eli and the defense has been terrible.
We'll see what happens this season with him. I hope his career isn't over.
Peyton played for a stacked team that just needed a QB.
I think it's a bit more nuanced than that. The debate was more along the lines of - (1) does Eli have enough left and (2) if a QB had been drafted at #2, would have been better to cut him (and I understand the cap hit impact).
Let's be honest here. Eli is approaching that football point of diminishing returns. No one knows when it's going to come, but at his age it's very nearby. It's insidious. That's why it's better to cut bait sooner rather than later more often than not, which is what Belichick has been deft at...

Denver won with geriatric game manager Peyton.

Just to clarify, cutting Eli this year would have freed up $5mm of cap space inclusive $17mm of dead cap, not that that fact rally matters at this point

I wasn't saying that Luck was a mistake or not a great talent. They could have kept Peyton for a year with Luck as the backup/heir. Peyton had a stacked offense but the Colts defense was never a great unit. They spent most of their money keeping the offense together at the expense of the defense.

Colt's comparison is always a bad one because no one knew what Peyton had left. He was coming off of neck surgery and many thought he was done. Plus they just drafted a highly regarded rookie, so that made the decision that much easier. The Packers comparison is also a bit off because it was driven more by Favre then anything.

Haha, I thought of him right when I opened this thread. Not good...
Yeah, John fricking Elway had nothing to do with a super bowl winning team. Sure.
