Did OBJ Suffer Ligament Damage?

Jerry "Championship" Reese : 5/13/2018 12:57 am
I can't find comfirmation anywhere. I will delete after someone links me, can't sleep without having confirmation that it was merely a clean break. I tried searching on here and Google. I'm praying to God there wasn't ligament damage and it just wasn't mentioned. That damn cheap shot in preseason by the no-name nobody Browns DB.

If it wasn't mentioned, how would we know?
81_Great_Dane : 5/13/2018 1:04 am : link
I don't remember seeing any press reports about ligament or tendon tears, but it is entirely possible the Giants didn't report the extent of the injury. On the other hand, if there'd been torn ligaments, I doubt OBJ would be as far in his recovery along as he seems to be.
I've seen posters say it was a clean break,
Jerry "Championship" Reese : 5/13/2018 1:10 am : link
But I can't find proof. Here's to hoping!

If you're talking about the high ankle sprain he suffered in preseason, a "sprain" is, by definition, ligament "damage." Basically, the difference between a "strain," a "sprain" and a "tear" is degree. A ligament is a bundle of fibers. If a few fibers break, it's a strain. If more break, it's a sprain. If enough break, it's a tear.

But I've never heard of those ligaments tearing.
The ankle broke

And the ligament tore, needing surgery to repair them Both.

I don't understand the concern about an ankle injury.
robbieballs2003 : 5/13/2018 7:36 am : link
When has an ankle injury every been a serious issue? Foot injuries are way different. Achilles injuries are way different. Ankle injuries? Not a problem to me at all.

Phew. Thank you. I was afraid the OP would never get to sleep
I had a worse version of his break playing hockey
David B. : 5/13/2018 7:48 am : link
Mine was a compound fracture at the top of the skate boot. Even with a compound fracture, the bone heals in 8-11 weeks, but those injuries DO damage the ligaments and tendons as well, and they take much longer to heal and are never quite the same. That said, if he rehabs it, it'd come back, and it shouldn't affect his speed or quickness (because that doesn't come from the ankles). After a few months of professional rehab, I was back on skates (and playing touch football) the following season -- and I was a fat, 38 year-old couch potato, not a 24 year old athletic superfreak. And I'm sure he's doing way more and better rehab than I did.

Point is, rehabbed properly, this shouldn't be an injury that changes him from what he was. His ankle might be cranky from time to time, but he'll certainly be able play on it and through it if need be.
Can't sleep?

Either you're exaggerating or you need a hobby.
Regardless,
Doomster : 5/13/2018 8:57 am : link
until he goes out there and shows he can do those multiple breaks of his in his patterns without loss of speed, we have no idea of what he is capable of.....

And the Giants would be crazy to extend him without knowing for sure......I wouldn't extend him until at least mid season, to see what kind of shape that ankle is actually in....
He will be fine
Big Rick in FL : 5/13/2018 9:18 am : link
I had the same exact injury. Same break and ligament tear when I was in HS. I came back completely fine and I'm not a physical freak with the best Dr's in the World. It was like 13 years ago and hasn't bothered me since it healed. Played basketball, football and soccer since it happened. He will be fine.
I never saw or heard
section125 : 5/13/2018 9:33 am : link
anything about ligament damage beyond the high ankle sprain. Thought the broken ankle was a broken ankle.

A strain involves contractile tissue (muscle/tendon) and a sprain involves non-contractile tissue ( ligaments). You are correct bthough they both essentially varying degrees of a tear.

Over OBJ’s ankle??? Seems to me you’d be losing sleep over being out of work!
One thing I’m curious about
mfsd : 5/13/2018 10:59 am : link
If I recall, the story was OBJ has never taped or wrapped his ankles before, bc he thought it might limit his mobility and burst.

Wonder if he will start doing so now.
Speaking from Personal Experience
HugeS : 5/13/2018 11:09 am : link
Suffered an injury almost identical to Odell's involving a snapped fibula right above the ankle, what's referred to as a malleolar fracture. There is always ligament damage in injuries such as this but unlike an ACL where the ligament has a primary responsibility in maintaining the structural integrity of the knee joint, the ligament here merely plays a supporting role. The ligament is repaired and the fibula is reduced and reconnected with a plate and several anchoring screws in what is known as an internal reduction and external fixation of the malleolus. Very common injury in contact sports and in Odell's case he should be full speed at about 9-10 months. The issue with ankles is cutting and planting and of course absolute strength. At a little over a year removed from surgery I still can't run quite as fast or lift quite as heavy as i used to but I'm getting close. Not comparing myself to an athlete but was very aggressive working out during rehab recovery and afterward and am in very good shape for a "weekend warrior." Cutting and planting however seems like a major hurdle especially for a guy who's whole game is predicated on precision and quickness. Because of Odell's awesome work ethic, his lighter weight, and his youth I'd still wager he'll make a full recovery to complete dominance as long as the coaches heed the training staff's advice and don't push him on the field too quickly. He should get the whole summer to continue to build up the strength and explosiveness in the leg that made him special and not just start practicing with the team because he feels good. One of the local doctors who worked on my ankle was involved with Wilkerson's situation and the general feeling is that the coaches, mgmt and player didn't heed the training staff's advice and started pushing the ankle too soon once the player felt "good" only leading to more complications.
Probably won’t matter
giantsFC : 5/13/2018 11:15 am : link
It all depends on how well he heals, how stable his joints are naturally, how well the surgery took (regardless of which was done) and how susceptible he will be to injuries to that area going forward.
He obviously had ligament involvement originally before the fracture occurred.
So yes, it’s both.

Have faith though. He worked hard. We’ll find out if he is one time injury guy or a glass man soon enough. Hence why waiting on a contract is the only smart option.
Here is a pic of OBJ rehabbing at a local gym...It
fredgbrown : 5/13/2018 11:18 am : link
looks like the injury has completely healed. The guy on the right looks uncomfortable though with his junk in his face.

It may be prudent
Dave on the UWS : 5/13/2018 12:52 pm : link
for the team to wait on a new contract but that may not be possible. If I'm OBJ I don't set foot on the field without an extension. Thus the conundrum
.
arcarsenal : 5/13/2018 12:59 pm : link
I've never seen so much concern over a broken bone before. He seems to be healing just fine and still has about 4 more months before he needs to be 100%.

I really don't think anyone should be losing sleep over this.

Why is he being compared to players who....

Had compartment syndrome
Had their patellar tendon explode
Blew fingers off with fireworks

???

Odell Beckham broke his ankle.
My biggest fear is that the injury trickles down into the foot.
Jerry "Championship" Reese : 5/13/2018 1:47 pm : link
I've seen it many times, including with Hakeem Nick's, a high ankle sprain leads to a broken ankle with ligament tears which ends up increasing chances of foot injury. I live on my 160 acre ranch, so I have plenty of hobbies and lots of work to do out here. Nevertheless, we potentially have one of the best WRs to ever play. I am praying he stays healthy for a lifelong career with the Giants, winning another Superbowl with Eli and then 1-2 more with Webb.

I agree with most of you, if he rehabs and heals well, this injury is no biggie. We are lucky and OBJ should be paid after proving himself in the first half of this seadon, pay him and then win a Superbowl. Floyd Mayweather won over 650 million in two boxing matches, OBJ deserves 100 million to play 5 years for us as one of the best WRs ever.
I'm more worried about OBJ's lack of taste
Larry in Pencilvania : 5/13/2018 4:59 pm : link
in pizza. I mean really the guy is worth a bazillion bucks and the dude is munchin' on the stuffed crust from Pizza The Hutt. He could fly to Italy after smoking' all that dope with all the cash he has lyin' around. That's another thing he needs a fall guy cause you can't be hangin' in a hot tub with a bunch of dudes and let people be snappin' pix and postin' them on BBI
Will feel a lot better when I see OBJ
TMS : 5/13/2018 5:05 pm : link
out on the field being OBJ. We do not know how much he has lost since the injury. Remembering Cruz and Nicks never being the same.
TMS
Jerry "Championship" Reese : 5/13/2018 6:13 pm : link
That's what I'm worried about as well. Hakeem Nicks was my favorite player and his story haunts me for lower leg injuries at the WR position.
.
arcarsenal : 5/13/2018 8:28 pm : link
Nicks had a litany of issues, though.

He broke his toe his rookie year.

He was suffering from compartment syndrome all the way back in 2010. Had a high ankle sprain. Strained hamstring.

In 2012, against TB, he got his foot stepped on, hurt his knee again. Had 10 catches for 199 yards that day and just was never the same after it.

Nicks was the type of guy who just played and didn't complain or make it evident he was hurt. He was a tough dude. But those injuries ultimately cut his career short. So, he's a cautionary tale when it comes to how quickly a player can go from top notch to nothing. But as it stands now, Beckham's injuries are very minor in comparison and he should make a full recovery.
Great to know, arc.
Jerry "Championship" Reese : 5/13/2018 10:28 pm : link
Here's to OBJ returning better than ever.
Nicks..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/14/2018 8:11 am : link
did not have an injury that "trickled down to his foot".

He had compartment syndrome and has permanent nerve damage. As in - it won't ever completely heal and he has loss of feeling in his calf area.

Neither he nor Cruz ever recovered from their major injuries, and neither had things "trckle down to their foot". Cruz ended up with calf injuries from over-compensating for the injured knee and probably returned too quickly, like Steve Smith.

NOT WEIRD.

We're gunshy and rightfully so.

David Wilson.
Victor Cruz.
Terrell Thomas.
Steve Smith.
Hakeem Nicks.

I can list many, many more excellent Giant players whose careers were cut down by injury. Apples and Oranges, I know - but still, the gut-drop and worry is the same. Here we go again?

'Relatively common' to me is not the sort of initial injury Odell took last preseason and then SNAPPED during the season. For a player who's game is built on insane cuts?

I hope you're all correct, but to me a player like Odell - like Victor Cruz is not the same player if he loses a step.
Those aren't good comparisons though
Greg from LI : 5/14/2018 10:52 am : link
Wilson had a congenital spinal deformity. Nicks' series of injuries has been well documented on this and other threads. Cruz wrecked his patellar tendon. Smith's knee injury was extremely severe. Terrell Thomas tore his ACL three times, I believe.

Beckham's ankle injury was a major injury but one that has an excellent prognosis for a full recovery.

That's why I threw the 'Apples and Oranges' caveat in there, y'see?

I know all of those injuries were more severe, that Beckham SHOULD be able to come back fully.

Just pointing out given the Giants horrific injury history of the last half decade or so, panic is about the only response I'd expect.

will fully evaluate OBJ before any contract offers are made. He was so talented because of his catching ability and ability to get separation and yards after the catch. Hope he still has it all. If so PAY him and lets get it on.
