My confidence in Shurmur is pretty high.

wgenesis123 : 5/13/2018 9:43 am
It is mostly unfounded at this point, perhaps at this point I had the same sort of confidence in Mac, but not the same optimism. I think it is partly due to DG. To my very untrained eye DG seems to be trying to give Betcher and Shurmur players that fit what they want to do. It certainly does not hurt that Barkley is one of those players. I know it is all a work in progress but I feel like management is working as a team. Does anyone else feel the same about these guys or think I got it all wrong?

I had this very uneasy feeling. Even after the first season I was still unsure about him. After watching him in interviews there was something that rubbed me the wrong way. With Shurmur I don't have those feelings. Shurmur brings a calm but strict approach to the organization. He is obviously a good man who will be hard on the players but fair. He will not allow any of the nonsense that occurred last year. He is very up front with everything where McAdoo was obviously not.

I think the opposite. A head coach has to be in win now mode. Shurmur has a proven veteran franchise QB on the roster that can still play. Having Eli was likely a big selling point for him as a potential Giants HC.
He has to be a 1000% better than last

Shurmur beleives in Eli. He bought in to ownerships belief that we could still win a championship with Eli in the next few years.

Therefore adding the highest instant impact player in the draft goes along best in advancing that vision.

Barkley was the unanimous #1 for this team and our win now approach

Gone are the miserable feeling of last season. In all my years of being a fan of this team I have never been more disappointed by this team both on and off the field as I was last year. Shurmur is exactly the type of coach this team needs. No more bullshit, it is time for the players to come together and function as a team.

If Landon Collins is really a leader of this team then he needs to stop criticizing players in the media and keep that garbage in house. No good can come from air grievances through the media.

We've obviously had bad seasons before but in the context of performance relative to talent level, it was one of the worst seasons in the history of this storied franchise.

However sometimes you have to go through the valley to stand on the mountain.

Gettleman has made just about all the critical moves to prepare us well to climb back to the top.

Yes it was a combination of expectations, performance, and drama that made it the worst season as a fan. The next closest for me was 2003. In 2002 the offense erupted and I thought Collins was on his way to finally becoming a great QB. That season was awful but it did bring us Eli and Snee.

already handles the media better than McAdoo ever did. He is professional and personable, but knows when to set limits. Loved the fact he called out Collins for talking about Flowers in the media. You donít realize how much McAdoo was in over his head until you start listening to Shurmur. Gettlemen is a breath of fresh air. Whether you agree with Gettlemenís vision or not, he is building the team the way he wants it. Hell yes...back to Giantís football!

Jay on the Island : 5/13/2018 12:13 pm : link
not just running obviously. When teams use base defensive packages with Barkley lined up in the backfield Barkley could split out wide to create a mismatch versus a LB or S. Barkley is going to be a nightmare to gameplan against.
Yeah I think this whole 'there is only one way to do it' mentality
ChaChing : 5/13/2018 12:15 pm : link
amongst many of us fans is just wrong. We didn't have to draft a QB at #2 as there's more than one way to skin a cat. I'm more interested in a coach being flexible, rolling with the punches and getting the most with what he has. I've never liked the idea "this is the system, and everyone has to run it THIS way" as if it's ever realistic to expect to have the right pieces at any one time. There's always adjustments to personnel, opponent etc. To me that's among the biggest aspects of coaching, as is player dev no doubt

From that view I like what's been said so far fwiw. Also his strengths are at minimum our weaknesses - he's great w/ QBs so the Eli situation should be in decent hands. He was part of revamping a weaker inconsistent OL, dealing w/ injuries thru the year iirc. And regardless of the QB situation (injuries, mediocrity), loss of one of their top skill player in Cook MN was a top team

Nothing is set in stone but I like how that's lined up, and what we've done in FA / draft

No doubt. It's probably more accurate to look at MN's RB usage last year. Still I envision / hope for SB having a Devonta Freeman type effect in Atl for our O. Not saying he's the same player either, but just that level of versatility, athleticism and home run threat. Can't help but get excited at the potential, esp w/ this coach's past RB usage
My confidence in Shurmur
8TimeChamps : 5/13/2018 12:25 pm : link
is 100% connected to his ability to be adaptable. Thatís a quality that comes in very handy in regards to a team with little depth and seemingly constant critical injuries year after year. Adjust on the fly and adapt your strategies to your current roster as best you can. I feel like that is a strength of his.

I most certainly did not want MacAdoo as HC. You can want to move on from TC but have wanted someone else.

Ironically once the D was fixed if we kept TC another year it may have resulted in a much deeper playoff run

I donít agree unless Shurmur wanted to replace Eli right now and I doubt thatís true. Like any new coach, you want to win right away. Barkley gives the team a much better chance of winning right away than a rookie QB sitting on the bench. Shurmur wants to build a little credit; heís not thinking 3-4 years down the road and I suspect Gettleman, at his age, is in the same position.

arcarsenal : 5/13/2018 1:02 pm : link
PS was the guy I wanted from jump street - I think he's an excellent offensive coach and has a much better track record offensively than McAdoo had when he was hired.

But even still. I think after 2016, most of us thought Ben McAdoo was a great hire and was going to be "the guy" for a long time.

He didn't even make it through the very next season.

Think about that.

Things can change and sour quickly. Confidence is nice. But Shurmur has his work cut out for him here.

Pascal4554 : 5/13/2018 1:14 pm : link
we had a second round grade? Pretty sure in Gettlemenís post draft press conference he said we had a fourth round grade on him which is where we took him. We had a second round grade on our third round picks not our later picks. Saying whatever Shurmur did or not do or want is speculation unless you have inside information.

Good post, UA. What is odd about these observations, which I believe are largely accurate, is that even AS it is becoming clear that the narrative is a false one (In Reese We Trust or that "this team is a SB contender"), reality doesn't seem to creep in until well after the belief and dreams are crashing and burning, as if a switch is pulled. Progression toward the 2017 debacle was gradual over the past five years, with 2016 being the anomaly, the result, we all hungered for.

GeorgeAdams33 : 5/13/2018 2:56 pm : link
Shurmur is likely hoping that Eli can play several more years at his current level. Gettleman likely feels the same way. They want to win now. They are all about team chemistry and it shows in all of their moves. They have a very healthy QB room with this group. Eli deserves the same respect from fans and media, but at least we have management that believes in him.

I've been learning more and more to trust DG & PS because they make good sense time and time again. They are smart men who handle their business the right way.
I really grew to despise Reese & McAdoo as they continually threw good men under the bus in attempts to save themselves and further their charades. All is right in Giantland once again. It's almost surreal. Go Big Blue!
I'll reserve judgement...

I'll say this much...

If any coach is going to get Eli back on track, we have the right guy.

I feel confident enough in Shurmur's ability to coach and work with QB's that if Eli looks shot again in 2018, I think we'll know that it's not the coaching and it's just that Eli has hit that wall.

So, for all of the people who have been entrenched in the "Eli is done/Eli is not done" debate all these months/years - I think we're going to get a definitive answer this season.

Good post, completely agree. I have felt all offseason that we are gearing up to do our best this year and shore up some holes next offseason (CB, RT) to make a serious run the following year. Never know, I didnít expect them to win in 2007 or 2011 going into the season and look what happened. If we can stay relatively healthy this year and get hot at the right time anything can happen. From a schedule perspective, the first half is brutal, if we can get out of there 5-3 or 4-4 we have a chance to make a run in the second half of the season.

You're right - but it's worth mentioning what team it was with and the fact that in the last 20 years, the Browns had like 3 years total where they did any better than they did with Shurmur.

I think they had one solid year with Crennel, one or two okay years with Butch Davis and one "respectable" year with Mike Pettine.

Shurmur is very much unproven as a HC - but I think he does have a solid resume as an offensive guy and has done some pretty good work with QB's. He's certainly more proven than McAdoo was when we first hired him.

Nothing is guaranteed at all. But I do think Pat Shurmur is a good offensive coach and I think he will be much better for both Eli and the young guys than McAdoo was.

Given what our choices were and who was available - I think this was probably our best option. We'll see how it plays out.
