They've signed G Chris Scott, CB Chris Lewis-Harris (as previously reported), G Malcolm Bunche, WR Alonzo Russell, DT Mike Jones and former Rutgers RB Robert Martin.
This is only a mild surprise. He didn't even make the 53 from last year. He was practice squad and then elevated to the 53 later on.
Exactly, it wasn’t that he ignored the line, he just didn’t know who to draft. And his free agent pickups left a lot to be desired as well (eg. Schwartz).
How would you characterize Reese's drafting considering this fact; In the 9 years between 2004 through 2012, a grand total of 2 premium picks in round 1 through 3 were spent on O-line players (Snee 2004, Beatty in 2011)? That's an 11% investment on the 5 O-line positions.
Maybe Reese didn't put a high value enough on Oline, maybe he and his scouts were just poor at scouting them.
To me, you have to be willing to make a larger investment on OL in the way of premium draft picks (rounds 1, 2, 3), or get unusually lucky via free agency, to build an effective O-line.
It's like he had terrible taste in olinemen, or looked for all the wrong things.
Meanwhile compare to Hernandez, DG's first olineman.

There was a myth that Reese "ignored" the line. He threw a bunch of draft picks and bushels of free agent dollars at the line. He didn't ignore it; he tried very hard and failed. IMO, failure is worse.

Compare to what exactly, the guy hasn't played a single down yet and could be a complete bust, you don't know at this point so a comparison is pointless.

Other than Richburg, I never liked any of Reese's OL picks, often reaches, or overpaid FAs like Schwartz and Baas. I'm actually excited about Hernandez fwiw.

that was one of the more glowing scouting reports I have ever read... one would think we just drafted the next Tony Boselli!
I'll scream it from the rooftops, but sy clearly lays out the prospects strengths, weaknesses and current pro comp. Can cruise through an entire list of OL in a few short minutes.
About 15 minutes in to the other review, I was still on the part about Pittsburgh being a steel town and Bis excelling at chalk tossing in elementary school.
Think about this......since we drafted Eli, 14 years ago, we have only drafted 2 OLmen that we have re-signed.....Snee and Beatty, and Beatty just happened to be in the right place at the right time....
We drafted Eli?
What a heavy cost to pay. A whole 7th round pick. When you have the chance to hold on to a 7th round draft pick, you absolutely must do it.
