NFT: Mets Minors 5/15/2018-Peterson another good start

DanMetroMan : 5/15/2018 7:28 am
AAA Worley
AA TBD
A+ Dunn
A+ TBD
A TBD

AAA
Evans 2-4, 2 HR (5 homers over his last 10)
Nido 1-3
Flexen 7 innings 2 hits 0 runs 2 walks 5 k's
Smith 1 inning 1 hit 0 runs 1 walk 1 k

AA
McNeil 1-4, 2b, K
Alonso 1-2, 2 BB
Mazeika 0-3, BB, K
Tebow 1-3, HR, 3 k's (K rate is absurd but credit where credit is due... last 10 games .333 2 homers, on the season .794 OPS, he might not be Lebron but he's one of the greatest pure athletes in recent memory)
Torres 1 inning 1 hit 0 runs 0 walks 1 K
Bashlor 1 perfect 1 K

Columbia
Fermin 0-4, 2 k's (has been awful lately)
Tiberi 0-3
Brodey 0-4, 2 k's
Vasquez 1-3
Manea 0-3, 2 k's
Peterson 7 innings 2 hits 1 run 3 walks 4 k's
Villines 1 perfect 3 k's (7.11 era.... 33 k's over 19 innings , last 10 innings 12 innings 26 k's... 7.50 era... ya don't see that every day)
Tebow is ranked 22nd in OPS

in the eastern league. unreal, he's really looking better and better. Alonso is 1 (vlad guerrero jr is right behind him) and jeff mcneil is 4. All over .1000 ops, Alonso and McNeil should be able to help at the ML level at some point. Tebow is deserving of a september call up, possibly this year if we're out of it.

any word on Flexen's stuff? or Petersons?
Can't
DanMetroMan : 5/15/2018 7:38 am : link
speak for this start but Peterson was 90-93 his previous start. Flexen his usual stuff 92-94, touching 95. Very straight. He has not pitched well. 59 baserunners over 39 innings 31 k's. I don't view him as a big league SP.

Eh. He's a solid twitter follow and good source of Mets information. He's a young guy, so sometimes I feel like he tweets opinion stuff that is more like a typical BBI post rather than what you'd expect from a professional writer, but it's not really a big deal IMO.

Tebow deserves credit for what's he doing. It's pretty remarkable, but he's unplayable in meaningful MLB games if he can't lower that K rate. Still, in some ways, you have to evaluate him similarly to much younger guys since he's seen so many less professional ABs for someone his age (or even 5 years younger). If Tebow is really serious about trying to be an MLB player, I think 2019 will be the real test to see whether he can start making contact. He's already shown he has legit power.

Happy to see Peterson not getting hit hard (and I like the pick/player) but would like to see some more Ks of single A hitters.

Anyone else have a feeling that Alonso is much closer to a big league promotion than most people think?
I was thinking about the Tebow stuff yesterday
bhill410 : 5/15/2018 9:57 am : link
If his last 2 weeks are a sign of him getting it and not just a hot streak it really is interesting. You almost wonder if he came directly in after college where he would be (he didn’t play at Florida right?). He is essentially a 22 year old as far as pitches seen. Power is legitimate, he obviously needs to correct walk/k ratio but everything else potentially plays
K-Rate
DanMetroMan : 5/15/2018 9:59 am : link
currently doesn't make him even a 5th OF option (also has a very weak arm/below average fielder). He may yet see a big league AB which is incredible but the K rate is absurd.

I listened to the Columbia game on the Radio last night. That was a classic pitching duel between Peterson and Michael Baumann, a 3rd round pick with the Orioles affiliate. Baumann won the damn thing 1-0, and is now 5-0 with a 1.42 ERA at this level. But Peterson matched him inning for inning. The Delmarva run scored in the first inning, on a walk, steal of 2nd, moved to 3rd on a groundout, and scored on a groundout to short -- Peterson charged with one run on no hits. That is the only earned run he's surrendered in his last 3 outings. Last night, he didn't allow a runner to reach 2B after the opening inning. The 'Flies are coming to Charleston this week...I want to see Peterson pitch.

Base hits were scarce in this game....only 2 on each side. Vasquez had one of them, but he stung the ball in all 3 atbats and he damn near took Baumann's head off with a rope. Sanchez had the other hit, but that was all the 'Flies could muster. The Shorebird's CF covered a lot of ground, he robbed Alfonzo of at least a 2B in the 3rd inning.

The 2 kids in the middle infield are smooth. Tiberi made a nice play behind 2B and later started 4-6-3 DP to end the 6th.

The Shorebirds have a Ripken on the roster -- Ryan Ripken is Cal's grandson. I'm sure the O's will give him a long look.
Just for clarity sake,
Pete in MD : 5/15/2018 10:46 am : link
Ryan Ripken is Cal Jr's son, so the late Cal Sr's grandson.

Yes, and Billy's nephew !! This Shorebirds team is pretty good.....they are tearing up the Northern Division of the Sally League. And their CF Nichting covers a lot of turf....I looked him up this morning and he's also hitting .326 !!
Ughh

Fangraphs has my boy Joey Bart now going second overall. He was in the bottom of the top 10 a few months ago and recently linked to the Mets. He'd be a great combo of value and need for us (a slugging catcher) but not great chance he lasts to #6.

The mock currently has us taking Travis Swaggerty.

6. N.Y. Mets – Travis Swaggerty, CF, South Alabama
The Mets are almost exclusively on college prospects here, with Kelenic and Liberatore the two preps under consideration. This is the first pick at which Florida 3B Jonathan India is in play. Bart was a target about a month ago, and Ole Miss lefty Ryan Rolison was under consideration here until he gave up 11 runs at South Carolina two weeks ago. The Mets have had heat in to see Swaggerty recently and he makes the most sense here. Teams believe the Mets are looking at upside prep prospects for their second pick, with heat in to see Meadows and New York prep righty Lenny Torres recently.
Rolison

Mize is likely going 1.1 so you can forget him at 6.

Madrigal, nobody questions the bat in terms of hitting for average and he can be a gold glove 2B, but will he hit for enough power?

Mclanahan was a Mets draftee out of HS, but he has already had one Tommy John and at 6'2" 188 does not exactly have the frame that is conducive to throwing high 90's 180-200 innings per year year in and year out. His strikeout numbers were up this year, but so were his walks.

Like Dan, I would hurl if Rolison is the pick. The player that intrigues me is Florida IF Jonathan India. He always had the tools, but has finally put them together. In a draft where the talent is quite flat, I think we can get a really good player in India who will cost less and allow us more flexibility with future picks.
Mets should draft pitching
Vanzetti : 5/15/2018 9:02 pm : link
They are good at that. They are horrible at drafting position players

Strawberry was a no brainer, consensus #1 pick. Other than that, it’s Wright and Dykstra

I’m probably forgetting someone, but really in their entire
History how many
Top position players have they drafted?
I’d put Reyes and Edgardo in that group.
PhiPsi125 : 5/15/2018 9:15 pm : link
But yes, they suck at drafting and developing position players.

Reyes and Fonzi were IFA's, where they've done better, but not draft picks.

Maybe Daniel Murphy?
Maybe you'll add Alonso to that list
pjcas18 : 5/15/2018 9:30 pm : link
today Alonso:

3 for 5 2 HR 3 RBI

True, but it’s all about their eye for talent that went through their minors system...so I kind of view it the same.

I thought about Murphy as well.
I’ve never seen a team as unlucky as the Mets with all these hits
PhiPsi125 : 5/15/2018 9:38 pm : link
always finding the holes. Or maybe it’s just the fact that Sandy has all his players swing for the fences all the time.

God they suck.
It would be nice to see this team get aggressive earlier
PhiPsi125 : 5/15/2018 9:47 pm : link
in the count (you know, like they did during the 12-1 start). They constantly watch the early hittable pitches and then swing at absolute garbage. Always behind in the count.

I cant believe Sandy pulled that off coming up on a DFA. Yeah the guy has been injured but we were literally releasing Harvey anyway and got a former all-star catcher who's still relatively young. Even if Plaw still ends up the starter, Devin is an infinitely better backup than Jose Suckaton.
I think Alonso will hit in MLB
Vanzetti : 5/16/2018 2:20 am : link
Very positive on this guy.

Of course, when I was a kid, I thought Butch Huskey was going to be a player, too.
He will look like Mcgwire
