If Eli gets suspended

Thegratefulhead : 5/15/2018 7:46 pm
Let's say Eli gets suspended 4 games for the game worn fiasco. Let's not argue if it will, could or should happen. For the sake of this argument , it happens. The Giants are 2-2 when he returns but Webb's 4th game was 300+ yards 3 tds 65% completion ratio and he looked good in a win vs the Saints at home. Does Eli start game 5? Why, why not?

Eli would play through it. Webb is a hypothetical pussy.

3 of the games would make things very interesting here. It would potentially end of being a negative with all of the second guessing that would inevitably happy either way after every game.

he won't get injured for 4 weeks. if he did get injured it would likely only be 1 or 2 weeks. and he would play through it.
Suspension? If Webb looks better than Eli in pre-season

he should obviously be the starter - right?

I'm sure some on BBI will go that way when pre-season rolls around.

Whenever this happens, the ball goes to the young hot shot. (Think Bledsoe/Brady or Romo/Dak.)

It'll be a sad, sad day for me, the end of the Eli era in Giants football. I'll always be incredibly grateful that he came to play for our team.

simply because the fans demand it. Giants fans are nostalgia hungry and don't give-up on their heroes. They long for that simpler time when a Giants QB could be strip sacked with a errant glance, screen passes have the success rate of a hail mary, immobility is a virtue, and the act of sliding to the turf is a change of possession.

I would think it would be the nostalgia of two SB MVP's, but I'm not surprised when people don't focus on that stuff. It's only the reason they play the games!

I did like the line about the sliding to the turf.

With the Eli threads, it is tough to detect sarcasm, because there are so many people who actually believe and post frequently about those points.

Duly noted about the sarcasm.
IF there is a suspension
giants#1 : 5/16/2018 8:43 am : link
I'd bet its 2 games, not 4. Brady got 4 for something that actually impacted performance on the field and because he and the Pats have a history of pushing the limits of the rules (to put it nicely). Eli and the Giants/Maras don't have that history so any suspension will likely be shorter.
Yeah...

Agree with all this, my only point was there is no requirement for any type of court decision (criminal or civil) for the NFL to suspend a player. I doubt Eli gets suspended, but hard to know what example the NFL will choose they want to make.

These hypothetical threads never go over well around here. These people are so emotionally wrapped in their preconceived notions that even a hypothetical that differs from their view causes them to get angry and dig their heels in.

Also, the reading comprehension leaves much to be desired.

Good luck.

To those that chose to indulge the question without its mere existence getting your panties wadded. let's really turn some people purple by asking:

At what record/point in the season would the Giants make a change from Eli if his performance is the same or worse than the last 2 years?

I say the bye week and the Giants need to have at least 3 wins. Jaguars,Cowboys, Texans, Saints, Panthers Eagles, Falcons, Redskins. They could go into the bye 2-6 if we are not much improved. I think 2-6 at the bye combined with mediocre QB play brings change. That said, I think we will 4-4 and Eli plays better.
if....
GMAN56 : 5/16/2018 9:18 am : link
I know we all love Eli for being a standup guy and winning us 2 Superbowls but the time will come for him to step away and that will be a sad day. I am still mad at him not getting the start last season and breaking the streak. The season was already in the crapper so why even mess with the streak? McAdoo should have been fired for even thinking that.
If Webb is good then, well sorry Eli, I think we stick with the kid.

only when the playoffs are completely out of reach, and he in the minds of the coaches he is a significant contributor to that. I doubt anyone has seen enough of Webb, or has enough confidence in Webb, to believe he would give the Giants a better chance to win this year. The only reason to play him is to evaluate him when wins and losses no longer matter.
I think there is some direct evidence...
Dan in the Springs : 5/16/2018 10:05 am : link
If the league wants to, they could easily justify a suspension. The trouble Eli and his attorneys had was that fighting the allegations likely draws more negative publicity than they clearly wanted. Yet settling leaves the allegations out there.

Some of the evidence presented by the claimant included a helmet represented by Eli as his "game-worn" that looked "like" the one worn in the game, but upon further inspection had clearly been doctored and was NOT the actual helmet worn in the game.

Then you have the damning text.

If Eli didn't mean what we all understand him to mean he had a chance to provide the counter-evidence to these very direct pieces of evidence. He said he was looking forward to doing so, explaining exactly what he meant in the text and clearing his name. He then paid good money to make sure he didn't have to do any explaining.

It will probably go away, but it might not. There is certainly direct evidence that's come to light that should be enough to suggest a suspension is in order. I'll bet fans of other teams (if they're paying attention) will be upset, but only if Eli plays very well. If Eli continues to struggle and the Giants aren't scoring 20+ ppg on a regular basis most people will be happy leaving him on the field.

Eli will Start every game until his contract is up. Remember, his last name is Manning. After Giants are eliminated from playoffs Giants will give Webb and Lauleta playing time . How much ? who knows.
Giants will give Eli every chance possible to go out on top in 2019.

you can't rule anything out with the worst commissioner in the history of sports - Goodell.

This would be a helluva a stretch to penalize Eli for what this really is - a good, old fashioned contractual dispute.

Yes I know that, but no criminal charges were filed against Eli. Ben R had multiple women make sexual assault allegations against him. Those complaints went to a civil trial, are we really comparing the two?

No, from a litigator, this was a civil lawsuit. There are criminal fraud prosecutions brought by the government (i.e., U.S. Attorney or state attorney general or local district attorney's office) and civil fraud claims brought by private individuals. This was a civil fraud suit. Civil fraud lawsuits happen all the time in the absence of any criminal prosecution whatsoever. I have brought and defended several such civil fraud suits. There is no concern of criminal liability here. If the government were going to bring a criminal prosecution for this, they would have done so a long time ago.

I can't see Eli possibly being suspended for settling a civil suit of this sort. The Giants and John Mara are also defendants in the suit by the way.
