NGT: David Teppers buys the Panthers

Tom from LI : 5/16/2018 11:54 am
I don't know much about this guy, buy his net worth is 11 billion dollars. I can't even imagine having that amount of coin.
David Tepper agrees to buy Carolina Panthers for $2.2 billion - ( New Window )

we saw that in our morning papers that this was coming. Thanks!

Hope he doesn't raise ticket prices as I want to go to Charlotte for an important game October 7.
No idea if he'll be a good or bad owner,
Mad Mike : 5/16/2018 12:02 pm : link
but I question his thoughts on interior design.

Tepper has a pair of brass testicles. Cartoonishly huge and grotesquely veiny, they are affixed to a plaque inscribed with the words THE MOST VALUABLE SET OF ALL TIME and are not at all out of place in Appaloosa's offices, which resemble a high-end sports bar

He probably paid cash for it...

That's absolutely what he did. I heard it on an interview with Andrew Brandt.

Yeah, sue him for being brilliant. What a stupid comment.

I actually worked at Appoloosa briefly back in the late '90s. I left (one of my many excellent career moves). He's brilliant, and a regular guy, straight shooter. Came from a working class family in Pittsburgh.
As far..

as owners go, he isn't very old.
I went to the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon

Which as you probably guessed is named after him due to sizeable donations to his Alma Mater. I watched him speak a couple of times at the school. He's a actually a pretty personable guy with a good sense of humor. My 1 year reunion coincided with his 35 year reunion. It was interesting to say the least to see him walking around in a polo and jeans nonchalantly while being worth more than everyone else in the building combined.

i went to tepper undergrad...

i echo your sentiments - definitely a very humble guy and was around campus often. Very low key.

He always gave away his penguins tickets in his suite to students...
It is possibly..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/16/2018 1:10 pm : link
a net neutral move, but likely not.

I don't like to see conference teams get upgrades, and this is a huge upgrade over Jerry Richardson.

Tepper's not only had success wherever he's been, but he's going to be a hell of a lot more level-headed than Richardson.
I'm the furthest thing from a businessman,
Mr. Bungle : 5/16/2018 1:11 pm : link
and this guy obviously is an investment wiz.

But when I see these last few NFL franchise purchases -- especially this one at $2.2 billion -- I really do wonder if NFL franchises will have the long-term appreciation from this point on to justify these insane purchase prices.

$2,200,000,000 is A LOT of bleeping money.
What did Jerry Richardson pay when he bought the Panthers?

200 million. Unreal flip
Very sharp and competive.
KWALL2 : 5/16/2018 2:41 pm : link
Iíd bet on him being an excellent owner for them. Could get interesting either the beef he has with Trump.

If you had the cash which way would you go? NBA team or NFL?

Cost is similar. Iíd go NBA as the better investment.

I believe he moved and caused a deficit in the Jersey budget.

I'd pick NBA, too, as an investment.

(And I'm someone who'd rather watch grass grow than watch the NBA.)

Mr. Tepperís payments may have even been higher. If Mr. Tepper earned $3.5 billion in 2013, his state tax bill could have been over $300 million, according to New Jersey accountants. Granted, his actual payments were probably far lower because of deferred income, charitable deductions and other accounting treatments. Yet Mr. Hainesís comments are believed to be the first time a state official has warned of a budget risk because of one residentís relocation.
Very smart aggressive businessman. Made a lot of money

I've seen Tepper quite a bit on CNBC. Like his calm, measured demeanor.

Out of curiosity - what do you do?
