NFT: Where Can You Buy a Used Car?

EricJ : 5/16/2018 5:27 pm
I have been looking for a used vehicle for my daughter. Where the heck to people sell their vehicles these days?

All I see online are dealers and small used car lots selling. Virtually no private owners on craigslist either. They all end up being some kind of dealer.

Is there some marketplace that anyone knows about?

In the event that you are selling a car, looking for...
Honda CRV
Toyota Rav4
Hyundai Tucson
or something similar...
Facebook marketplace

Just have to eliminate dealers from the search.

Look online as well...private parties can post on sites like Auto Trader.
I like CarMax a lot...

When unable to find a car FSBO, I use CarMax and use their website.

even the "private owner" thing on Craigslist

often ends up really being a dealer with the photo taken someplace other than their lot.
BTW

The cars are sold 'as is'.

Still, Hertz has great prices and deals on used cars.

Same here.
I checked out all of the links suggested in this thread...
EricJ : 5/16/2018 9:04 pm : link
virtually all of them are 99% dealers. Facebook has a few private owners but mostly dealers. Still not sure where private owners are selling their cars. Is EVERYONE trading them during a new vehicle purchase?

Where are you located? I recently bought a used car for my sister. Found a guy up in Danbury, CT who seems really down to earth and stands by his conviction that he goes above and beyond selling a used "lemon".

He carries all cars, most of them have 100K plus mileage but many are in very good condition. He seems to specialize in Subaru's.

Here is a link to his website:

Carmax

We've bought a couple of cars and sold one there. I like the no pressure and haggle free pricing.
I've sold my cars through Facebook...

While I haven't used it, I've seen private Sellers when I've shopped on Autotrader.com and they have a filter for private sellers only which seems to work pretty good.

But the newer the car the harder it is to find a private seller. I think most are trading in because so many need financing to buy and those moving on from a late-model low-mileage car are probably buying new and financing as well.

Do they still do police car auctions?

I had one as a new driver. Not in any way pretty, but those damn things were tanks. Heavy duty cars, typically had engines that had some extra resiliency built in (additional coolers, heavier duty alternators, etc.).

It's been a long damn time since I've seen one, though.
a car dealership?

How does that work?
I really don't..

Customers start at Carvana's website, where they can buy a car online and choose to have it delivered or pick it up at the vending machine. If they choose the latter, they schedule a time to go to the vending machine site, where they receive a silver "commemorative, oversized Carvana coin" that activates the machine with a rumble and transports the vehicle down from the tower to a ground-floor delivery bay.

A robotic lift takes the car down and slides it to the customer, with no human intervention.

So, people actually buy cars on a website without even test driving them?
I guess...
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/17/2018 2:14 pm : link
if you buy a car off a website and choose to pick it up at a vending machine instead of just having it delivered, the test drive thing probably doesn't even come to be a thought!
Carvana has a seven-day return policy
Greg from LI : 5/17/2018 2:30 pm : link
I think.
Unfortunately, caravana
EricJ : 5/17/2018 2:36 pm : link
and some of the other sites are specializing in new cars. Virtually all of the sites referenced so far in the e-mail return results that are mostly dealers selling.

Makes me wonder whether people sell the cars on their own anymore or does everyone just trade them in?

Facebook has SOME private owners. The other funny thing is so many of the pictures are taken in front of an auto body shop. I guess they don't realize that people can see that in the background or... most people are just stupid.
When I bought Carvana
Metnut : 5/17/2018 2:38 pm : link
they delivered the car to my door and I had a 7-day "test drive" period where I could return it no questions ask. I took the car to my mechanic and it all checked out. Was really easy to do this all via the Internet and get the exact car I was looking for and not have to deal with a dealership.
Check the classifieds in
Gman11 : 5/17/2018 4:30 pm : link
the local paper. I'm in a small town, but the car dealerships don't use the classifieds any more because of all the online ways to lists their cars.
