Lorenzo Carter: The Next LT?

mittenedman : 5/17/2018 9:39 am
Before anyone gets mad (and it would piss me off) - this is very much tongue-in-cheek.

Lorenzo Carter: 6'5" 250 lbs.

Lawrence Taylor: 6'3" 240 lbs.

One of the underscores of rookie mini-camp was Carter being unexpectedly explosive off the snap. Sure, it could be meaningless, but it could be the beginning of Carter wow'ing observers. Isn't it nice to not be able to dismiss the possibility we're sitting on a stud pass rushing OLB? What ultimately makes or breaks a 34 is how good the OLBs are.

There was this little nugget from his college teammate Aaron Davis:

Quote:
"Man, that guy - he looks like he's LeBron on the football field," Davis recalled with a laugh Saturday, adding: "I mean, as soon as he walks through the door, you're like, 'This guy.' You don't see too many people who look like him, and are that athletic, so any time you bring that to the table, and he has the work ethic to back it up, you're gonna be someone who's highly touted."

Georgia stacked him and used him to cover TE's but he still managed 15 sacks. That Kirby Smart D is stacked and makes it difficult for any one individual to pile up #'s or rush the passer full time. Think Carter beats out Kareem Martin at LOLB and gives the D a much-needed boost in team speed.

I don't question the mental state of someone dreaming

about the joy it would bring to see another LT play... but I'll get out the straight jacket for anyone mental enough to make such a suggestion a year later

Rhymes with L.T. That's about as close as it gets.
Carl in Conn +1

. different game now that your opponents OT is 320lbs as opposed to 275lbs.
Just my opinion
Dan Blue : 5/17/2018 8:31 pm : link
But I think he’s going to be really good. Yes there’s a big difference between being really good and being LT good.
If he can do some zone style PD that's huge
idiotsavant : 5/17/2018 8:46 pm : link
You can switch up collins (shadow style Vs TE, or zone vs TE, for example, or blitz, etc) and Carter (chase, zone PD , or true blitz but maybe not the 4/3 DE type stuff) whose coming whose going.

If you line up Collins over the tight end
idiotsavant : 5/17/2018 8:54 pm : link
Then Collins blitzes, instead of covers, you need someone who has enough speed to jump that TE pass route. Or the other way around. Carter has the speed.

I don't think you will see Martin in that roll, but on the field as a variable line piece more or less.

Sucks.
Yes.
short lease : 5/17/2018 10:11 pm : link
Well actually, he will have to change his last name to something that begins with a "T".

You can't spell Carter and start it with a "T" - that would be Tarter. And, people would probably start to call him Tarter Sauce. I don't like it .. I don't like it at all.

I totally GET what the OP is trying to say...not sure so sure why you guys cant play along.

I interpreted the OP as suggesting Carter could be the NEXT (as in same type of player) LT in terms of his athletic similarites to #56. A pass rushing demon who is a OLB/DE tweener (that's literally what LT would be in today's game) with the athleticism to be effective in pass coverage as well as against the run. Something that is a very rare combo for the position. For instance, Leonard Floyd was attractive for having TWO of the three abilities I mentioned (his slightness in stature suggested his being a liability against the run at the pro level) and he was a top ten pick.

I get that Carter was a 3rd rounder, but I also get the OP in that he has those the rare combo of attributes to be a 3 way force at OLB....as well as quite a bit of production at the highest level in college.

I highly doubt the OP was suggesting that Lorenzo Carter is going to affect the game like Lawrence Taylor. Rather that he could be the first type of player that LT was for our team (because we havent had a player or even scheme that valued skill set like that) based on his athleticism.

I get the initial post/idea. While Von Miller is the closest thing to LT, Carter has freakish athleticism and physical attributes that can have similar game wrecking potential. Never thought much of Leonard Floyd because of his build...not his game. Carter has similar athleticism with a NFL frame...and now we have a place for that kind of player on our defense
"looks like he's LeBron on the football field"

Is that supposed to be a compliment?
And Von Miller is a one-trick pony
WideRight : 5/18/2018 8:09 am : link
Nothing close to LT

Get real
It sure would be great if a third-rounder
81_Great_Dane : 5/18/2018 10:51 am : link
turned into the most disruptive, dominating defender in NFL history. But maybe wait until he's actually played in something resembling a pro game before we start with that comparison?

I mean, at some point people were excited about Damontre Moore, too. Some guys blossom, some guys fold.
Huh?
Rong5611 : 5/18/2018 10:55 am : link
There will never be another LT, even if this guy turns out to be great.
Exactly as chopperhatch said
idiotsavant : 5/18/2018 11:40 am : link
Except, again, if it's a combo lb/de/PD player you seek. Rare indeed.

The DE part is what has changed the most since the 1980s due to an average 40-even a 50lb increase in the size of the O Tackles ...that your DEs need to take on.

Which is why the ILB/OLB duties have changed since then as well.

Basically, bigger for the line or even faster for shadow or zone PD. ..usually you have to choose one, as 289lb ers who can also fly are even more rare than 240 ers who could fly then were rare.
One of my favorite picks

of the draft . He has the tools to be a menace on passing downs and we need all the help we can get rushing the QB .
The mold was broke there will never be another LT .
Why was his

sack numbers so low?
Given what his responsibilities were

They werent. The Dawgs had many pass rushers. They had Carter off the ball & at ILB covering TEs because it was best for the team.
