A bus carry 40 5th graders and 4 chaperones from Paramus NJ crashed this morning. The Bus was torn off the carriage. It is bad, no official fatalities have been confirmed but I am hearing that there are some.
Life can change in an instant. Remember what really is important in your life. Go home and give your wife, your kids, your siblings and parents a big hug and kiss.

Just awful. Gut wrenching.
every parent's nightmare. what was the driver doing?

Unreal. I have 2 girls in 5th and 8th grade. I have an irrational phobia when they do on distant class trips. This certainly doesn't help. Awful.

Too early to say, early reports say a truck was involved so hard to know who is at fault. I’m sure the rain didn’t help.
Just awful
A few years back, many of them did not have seat belts.
This one had seatbelts.
When I was in school we had some really shady character driving these things. I mean worse then Otto Mann. Some who look like they were on crack.
It seems to me that , and I'm speculating and seen pics and know that area very well...
Unfortunately at first glance with photos it seems it's possible that the bus might have been making an illegal u-turn at the center median and got smacked by the dump truck.
I'm sure we will find out more on what happend , but going by photos , that seems to be a very real possibility

school bus is also obliterated ... obviously head on crash … I'm very familiar with this area of Rt 80 and I have no idea how there could be a full head-on crash at what appears, from the damage to both vehicles, to have been at high speed... you'd have to imagine one was literally driving the wrong direction on Rt 80

Oh man...
Those poor families.

Airbags in a school bus - front at least - sounds like a really bad idea. The smaller kids are likely to suffer greater trauma as a result of the airbag impact than they would from most collisions.
Side curtain airbags would be a different story, but even those would probably be of limited value given the height of a bus and the rigidity of it's frame.

Good call. That does seem like a real possibility. Just horrendous.
Doesn't look like a head on to me. The front of the bus would have been much more severely damaged.
Regardless, it is a chilling scene and thoughts go out to all the families involved.
Route 80 with all those uphills and downhill can be scary. So sad for the families.
Trucks shouldn't be allowed in anything but the right lane with a speed limit of 55. The should have severe penalties for drivers. These guys are always going over their hours limits and work on little sleep.

I've driven through the mountains on rte 80 in PA in rain/snow/fog and there's still always trucks flying past at 75+. It's unbelievable how reckless they can be.

Couldn't agree more.
If this is the case there could be some serious penalties for the drivers. Also, if that’s the case, I’m shocked the damage wasnt worse. That truck looked fully loaded. If he hit that bus head on the cab on the bus would have exploded vs just rolling off the frame.

I cannot even fathom the bus driver making the decision to u turn on the median....hell in my Wrangler I wouldnt consider it. If thats what happened, that driver should be prosecuted for criminal endangerment. That cant be what happened...id be in disbelief at the driver's recklessness.
FWIW, the trucking company of the dump truck has a poor safety record...involved in 7 accidents in the last 2 years.
Police didn't release details of how the crash happened, but the trucking company had a string of crashes in recent years and a higher than average rate of violations that sidelined its vehicles, according to federal safety data.

Good point chopper, but the truck would no way be at fault if the bus driver was making the illegal u-turn.
Unbelievable stupidity...i know 80 well and I wouldnt consider making a median u turn in my jeep...just not worth the risk or the ticket for that matter. All despite I could def pull it off.
Driving a school bus and doing this is almost criminal.

TF, was just pointing out what I read.
The driver deciding to do that....its ridiculous to me even considering how irresponsibly truck drivers drive.
Hope the driver gets life in prison
Wow.
Agreed. I've done it twice total in my lifetime.
Both times were to turn around in dead still traffic , everyone else did it also.
It's super super super tempting todo sometimes, but dangerous! Even cops put on the emergency lights before turning into those spots that you need to slow down to like 20 mph in the left lane to safely turn into it
Wow.
Do these drivers use the Waze app or something similar?
Its ridiculously easy! Why did that other bus driver go down southern state parkway on LI?
