Robinson Cano's positive test for a banned substance and subsequent 80-game suspension announced this week came as no surprise to one of his former New York Yankees teammates. Mark Teixeira overlapped with Cano for five seasons in New York. During a guest appearance on the Michael Kay Show on 98.7 ESPN New York on Thursday, the former first baseman was asked if he ever suspected Cano of using performance-enhancing substances. "Yeah, I don't really want to get into too much detail. I love Robbie. I'm just not surprised," said Teixeira, a baseball analyst for ESPN since retiring after the 2016 season. "I don't really want to go too much further, but I think a lot of people are kind of saying the same thing." |
Yup, should have taken the high road.
If they weren't WS teammates I'd say it's fair game.
There can't be a desire by fans to rid PEDs from sports and then harangue clean players from making comments about things they may know about guys in their own clubhouse.

Yup, the code of silence amongst players has been strong for a long time. Take Canseco - universally derided by fellow players, fans, and owners for going full bore and outing himself and other players and the game in general - and yet from all we know now, he was one of the few actually being honest.
Was just a little surprising hearing it from him as I thought he was always a guy who took the high road.
2009 brothers .
I'm sure if they asked about 75% of the MLB he'd say the same thing. There are a lot of juicers in baseball. I've met well over 1000 baseball players and you can tell a lot of guys aren't supposed to be as big as they are. Brett Boone & Jason Giambi stand out the most. There forearms were just fucking ridiculous in person. Also I'm friends with a few current players and a few former players. They've all said steroids runs rampant in MLB and in the minors.
I don’t think it matters. Saying what he did removes the benefit of the doubt, which is shitty considering they were teammates. Just a weird statement, one you’d think he wouldn’t say.
“Man that’s unfortunate, would have never guessed that with Robbie” is something more along the lines of what I would think Tex would say. Or, “Thats unfortunate, really don’t know anything about it, though”.

that's not the same thing as "knowing" a teammate is using. It would have been one hell of an accusation to make back then - what if he'd been wrong?

This was Francessa’s take too. Tex could have just bypassed the question and moved on.
His answer isn't an admission of knowledge of use. It is a fair answer that still leaves enough doubt to nlt be an outright accusation or outing. And if he did know for certain, I would have no problem with him saying as much under these circumstances.
Is a deal for either possible? What would you be willing to part with?
Personally, Syndegaard is the one pitcher in baseball right now that I would unload our farm on. I would like to keep 2 of Frazier, Florial and Sheffield if possible. But that is negotiable. Getting a young arm like that to pair with Sevvy would be unreal.
I would like deGrom, but wont be held over the flames for him.
I normally wouldnt jump the gun like this, but Sonny Gray is probably on his last straw before being relegated to number 5 starter. Tanaka is going through one of his "things" and I think he will be fine. But looking at Houston, that staff scares the lights out of me. Tanaka and Cbass as 3 and 4 would compete with that Stros in October.
Any other names on the radar that wont cost the Yanks' collective scrotum?
People with knowledge of the Sox' farm, do they have enough in their farm to make a run at one of the two Mets pitchers?

This isn’t court. Lying happens all the time, and I’d expect some sort of code between myself and my teammates. Robbie did it to himself, he doesn’t need a teammate piling it on.

I would have more of a problem with him lying, as some here suggest he should have done. He's not throwing Cano under the bus. Cano did that to himself.

LaGreca had a great analogy on the Kay show. He said when have have a group of really close friends and some of you suspect that one of your friends is doing some things that may be shady, you just kind of deal with it because he’s your friend. But you’re certainly not going to “turn him in”, he’s your friend. But when he gets busted for these shady dealings and someone asks you if you are surprise, there is nothing wrong with saying, no I’m not surprised. It isn’t your job to lie for your friend that just got busted. He did it to himself. Why lie?
Frankly, I like the honesty. But I can see how it rubs people the wrong way too.
If you didn't suspect Cano was juicing then feel slighted by Teix.
I don't. I'm not surprised.....

Yeah why can't they play clean like Arod, Bonds, McGwire, Clemens, Giambi, Palmeiro, etc.
Really? Didn’t realize how many narcs were on BBI.
For the record I despise players who use steroids. I have no sympathy for Cabo if he is guilty. But Tex is a big pussy for this.
Ahh, no. Stop being a jackass.

I’m not sure you know what a narc is. Wouldn’t a narc ran to someone while it was happening? Someone saying that they aren’t surprised by something after the fact is now considered a narc? Who knew!
Hey, I’m not surprised that my co worker was caught cheating on his wife. Now I’m a freakin narc, damn it!
Grand scheme of things, I really don’t care. Just weird to see him not say “no comment” and move on.
I think the real problem is idiot fans that have no clue about baseball that point to batting average alone as an indictment of a players worth. Like wtf what a joke.
It’s a gross exaggeration used to poke fun of BBIers. Nothing more. Thought it was obvious but I guess I’ll recant that statement.
He will smack a homer next inning or AB
We really need to. This thread is a disaster and I don’t want to sift through it anymore
