“2. STERLING SHEPARD (63.6 PERCENT)
Another receiver who wouldn’t be one of the first to come to mind, Shepard didn’t have a ton of contested opportunities, but he hauled them in well when he did. Oddly, the Giants receiver’s 14 contested catches netted him only 117 yards and zero touchdowns. That’s a lot of contested slants in Ben McAdoo’s offense.”

Morgan Arizona 98.7 FM: Cardinals OL Justin Pugh: Don’t include me on your injury-prone list
“We were struggling up front and they moved me to a position I hadn’t played in two years,” Pugh said. “I’m out there playing right tackle and then they were like, ‘we need you to play left guard’ and then next week it’s back to right tackle.
“That’s not good for your body. You can’t get used to it that fast and there was some anxiety because I hadn’t played the position in two years, going to right tackle. They were like, ‘OK, we’re playing [Broncos linebacker] Von Miller this week. We need you to go to right tackle. We’re playing [Rams tackle] Aaron Donald. You’ve got to go back to left guard.’
“I just put one on the back for the team, no pun intended, and it ended up not helping me too much. It would have been a totally different story this past year if I wasn’t in that situation.”

UCLA RB Soso Jamabo should do well in the new system with the Bruins. A strong, patient track runner who can be tough to bring down and, while he’s not dynamic athletically, he can play on third down. I expect him to have a career year this fall as a senior.

SouthCarolina WR Deebo Samuel is the real deal. Hurt most of last yr; has had durability issues all three years, but he’s 6’0, 210 LBs and he’s got juice to make plays at every level. Great YAC. Pretty good route runner. That entire GamecockFB WR corps is extremely well-coached

SouthCarolina OL Zack Bailey played RT last year but sounds like he’s sliding back into guard this year (pro position). Not the most athletic kid you’ll find but he’s a mailer inside that wants to get after people. Hope he can be fully healthy this year bc he’s another fun one

Low-hanging fruit but Houston DT Ed Oliver has outstanding potential. Freak show athlete. Great first step. Has NOT reached his ceiling yet, though. Best ball should be ahead of him. Not all the way there as a pass rusher. Can get stronger. He could be a great one.

One game and change into Oregon DL Jalen Jelks. This kid is dripping with potential. Some Everson Griffen to the way he plays. Lightning quick off the ball. Twitched up. Lines up everywhere. Competitive. I like what I’ve seen so far.

I like Kentucky WILB Jordan Jones - athletic kid who should test very well at next year’s Combine. Lack of size is a concern, but he’s rangy, tough, and pretty instinctive. Likes to come downhill despite his frame. Guys with his skill set went higher than projected this year

I’m glad Miami CB Michael Jackson went back to TheU but he’s a fun one to study. Good size. Instinctive kid. Made some great plays in zone and has a pretty good feel for hip-pocketing in man. Tools are good - not great - and I’m excited to see him start a full season down there

Giants Training Camp Previews from prior years

1986: The Holdouts

Litsky NYT: GIANTS OPEN CAMP WITHOUT 7 ROOKIES
“The Giants opened training camp today with half of their 14 draft choices missing.
In a year in which the National Football League's 28 teams are trying to limit salaries for rookies, less than a third of the 333 draftees have signed. The Giants are doing better than most teams.
They signed Ron Brown, a Colorado wide receiver, and Steve Cisowski, a Santa Clara offensive tackle, Monday; Solomon Miller, a Utah State wide receiver, this morning and Jim Luebbers, an Iowa State defensive end, and Jerry Kimmel, an inside linebacker from Syracuse, this afternoon.
John Washington, an Oklahoma State defensive end, and Jon Francis, a Boise State running back, were here at the Pace University camp. However, league rules banned them from the team meeting this morning and the weight lifting and sprinting tests this afternoon because they had not agreed on contracts. Lasker Near Camp
Greg Lasker was at the Elmsford Holiday Inn, six miles from camp, where his agent, Tom Selakovich, held an afternoon news conference to discuss the state of negotiations. The other draftees - Eric Dorsey, Mark Collins, Erik Howard, Pepper Johnson, Vince Warren and Len Lynch -were absent and unaccounted for.
In all, 44 of the 53 expected players were here. The 53 are draftees, free-agent rookies, veteran and rookie quarterbacks, veterans returning from injured reserve and a handful of other veterans. The remaining veterans will undergo physical tests Monday and join the rookies in two-a-day workouts Tuesday.
The unsigned rookies include Dorsey, a Notre Dame defensive end chosen on the first round, and the Giants' four second-round choices -Collins, a Fullerton (Calif.) State cornerback; Howard, a Washington State nose tackle; Johnson, an Ohio State linebacker, and Lasker, an Arkansas safety.
Selakovich, Lasker's agent, said the Giants had offered identical $810,000, four-year contracts to their four second-round choices. He said that at 12:30 this morning, George Young, the Giants' general manager, raised his offer to Lasker to $860,000. Seeks $950,000
Selakovich said he had been seeking $950,000. However, he said he would settle for $930,000, which he said was the average value of last year's contracts for second-round draftees.
The Giants acquired the extra second-round draft choices in trades for Mark Haynes and Gary Zimmerman. Selakovich said the agents for the other second-round draftees and the general managers of other teams were delaying their negotiations to see what the Giants would pay.
The only second-round choice who has signed is Kenneth Davis, a running back for the Green Bay Packers. The only first-round choices signed are Tony Casillas, a nose tackle for the Atlanta Falcons, and Rod Jones, a cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Selakovich said Young's hands were tied because Young had to clear his contracts with Jack Donlan, the executive director of the N.F.L. Management Council.
''George Young is a fair man,'' said Selakovich, ''but he is being told how to negotiate. This is not a New York Giants problem, it's a league problem. How can a league tell a club how much to pay a player? That's socialistic.'' Young Will Not Comment
Young would not comment on the contract numbers. And while saying he had a good relationship with Selakovich, he seemed angered by the agent's comments.
''Jack Donlan is not a factor here,'' said Young. ''We're into the bogey-man techniques. Find a bogey man and blame him. All Jack Donlan does is collect information and make it available to us, the same way the union makes information available to agents. He doesn't tell us what to do. Nobody in this league told me what to sign a guy for.
''I'm not rapping Jack Donlan. It's easy to make him the culprit. I'm the culprit. I'm looking for what fair deals are and trying to get it done. I was ahead of the market when I made my offers. What am I suppose to be, Santa Claus?''
Young also was upset by Selakovich's statement that the Giants made a gross profit of $4.65 million last year. The agent said the information was supplied by the N.F.L. Players Association, the players' union.
''That information is wrong,'' said Young. ''And some people have the attitude that if an N.F.L. team announces a profit, it's a public disgrace.''
