So, I have a friend who is going up to our local track to watch and bet on the Preakness, and gave her $20 (I know, big spender). I have no idea what I'm doing with horse racing and she expects me to text her what my bets will be.
I understand Justify is a heavy favorite and Good Magic has a good position out of gate 5 and is a good horse as well.
I know some stuff, like a Trifecta means basically a parlay for getting the horses right in order, first, second, and third. I understand an Exacta is getting the top two horses in order, and I get the Win, Place, and Show.
She was talking about something called "a wheel" with Justify. That I have no idea what she's talking about. Also, can I place a $2 bet on a Trifecta or is it $2 on first, $2 on second, and $2 on third, (essentially a $6 bet) and you only get paid on it if all 3 are correct, right?
And how do I see what I would get paid out if I bet the Trifecta? How are these odds calculated?
I know these are a lot of questions but if you can at least help me out a little I'd be grateful.
2. For a triple you can bet it straight for 2 dollars. Or you can box it. $1 box is 6 dollars since there are 6 combinations.
Lets say theres a 1000 dollars left and 10 winners, everyone gets 100 dollars. If there are 5 winners, everyone gets 200 dollars.
ill bet either lone sailor or tenfold to place and show. I dont think anyone is beating justify. Dont see a lot of money in this race and not worth wagering too much.
With the mud stay away from the inside horses
I’m betting Good Magic
I am still going 7-5 in the majority of my bets.
So far its very chalky...
Churchill, Belmont, SA, Woodbine...
5 or 8 to win or place

Agreed. That's the play. His sire, Curlin, was brilliant in the mud. Hoping we see that really kick in today...
Ortiz, the jockey on Good Magic, blew the race. That horse is not a pace setter; he is a stalker. To battle Justified head to head for most of the race was as dumb as it gets. It was a real testimony to the horse to endure that fight as long as he did to finish 4th by only a length.
Won almost a grand total. Thomas is the man.
I don't need to tell you how close either of those came to happening. Good Magic was right there all the way until the last 100 feet or so. I actually thought I won at first, only to feel crushed.

I disagree with this strongly. If Ortiz lets justify go out by himself he gets comofortable and sets the tone of the entire race. By pressuring him for 80% of the race... he got tired and became beatable. Letting a monster o T on the lead by himself means doom for everyone else.

Well, from today's DRF:
Good Magic dueled with Justify from the start in the Preakness, but he couldn’t outrun him and ultimately finished fourth, beaten one length. Afterward, Jose Ortiz, Good Magic's rider, blamed himself for giving the horse a bad ride.
“I messed up, that wasn’t the plan we drew,” Ortiz said. “I wasn’t supposed to be where I was.”
“I didn’t want the horse on the lead,” trainer Chad Brown said. “I’m disappointed with the trip. Post [position] didn’t help, we were inside the other horse the whole way. Unfortunately, our horse took the worst of it being on the fence, getting pressed the whole way; he’s just not a horse that runs on the lead, so I’m disappointed.”
Brown can be upset all he wants but chance of laying off and coming to beat an untested horse was probably not going to happen.
He was never going to be on the outside of him. I thought he ran a terrific race. Sitting behind him would have been worse IMO.
Brown is probably more upset on how the race started. Pretty low class on him calling out Ortiz who is one of the best in business.

GM played Justify's game and lost. Battling for the lead is not GM's style - that's the point. Just look back at his PPs. You'd rather get beat doing what you do best versus taking to new tactis in a G1 as significant as the Preakness.
