Worked with Tolbert in Denver, I'm sure that had a lot to due with him ending up in NY. For just under $1M, they got their 3'rd or 4'th WR and a special teams standout.
A poor man's Dwayne Harris. He started 3 games in 4 years? Â
His salary for 2018 is $975K, that's what I was referring to.
Hard to break into a lineup of Thomas and Sanders. He's got good work ethic, character. I really think this signing will payoff, there's a reason he was a second round pick.
regarding Marshall. I think many thought it was low risk high reward. Others, or maybe them too, thought it was terrific. Others were pretty skeptical. I was cautiously optimistic. Interesting track record so who the hell knew what to expect? I hated to be right.
Of course not. But Latimer is terrific on specials, he’s a big target, very good blocker, he’s 25, high-character, work-ethic guy. And the price is very reasonable.
I think that combo gives reason for at least a little optimism.

Considering what we paid, considering the Giants may use two tight ends or play Engram as a wideout, and considering that he helps on special teams, I agree. Latimer was a good signing.
I missed what he did that makes him a great signing Â

It’s a one-year deal for $2.5MM, 99% of which is guaranteed. Since you’re the expert on Cody Latimer’s value, please explain why we should ignore his $1.5MM signing bonus in calculating his “cost” to the Giants.
RE: I missed what he did that makes him a great signing Â
But I don't think it was a bad signing, either. It was relatively cheap for a guy who could turn out to be a huge asset on special teams as both a returner and a gunner. So let's all take a deep breath and see how things unfold.
Oh, and don't forget...WHAT THE HELL IS TYREE DOING IN THERE?

Stranger things have happened.
Living in the Denver area, ive seen him play a lot over the past few years. His first few years he just did not connect with Peyton for whatever reason. However, despite the Broncos QB/OL issues (played 3 qb's and had a Giants level Oline) he actually managed to come on a little last year. He is still fairly young and I really believe his best football is ahead of him.
in his fifth year the light is going to come on. LOL
Can't really blame it on him. He's QB situation has been brutal. He was a rookie the only year he had a good QB as a pro.
His 2nd year he had Peyton (Who was horrible) and Osweiler.
His 3rd year he had Trevor Siemian & Paxton Lynch who were equally bad.
His 4th year he had Siemian, Lynch & Osweiler who were even worse then they were in 2016.
Demaryius Thomas & Emmanuel Sanders are Pro Bowl WRs and there numbers got worse and worse from 2014 to 2017.
Also he was behind two All-Pro/Pro Bowl type WRs. So his snap counts have been very low for his entire career. Last year was the first time he played over 20% of the snaps and his numbers went way up.
Can't really judge Latimer off of his time in Denver. He had terrible offensive coaching. Here are there offensive rankings.
2015 - 20th
2016 - 22nd
2017 - 27th
He was behind 2 Pro Bowlers. He had some of the worst QB play in the NFL. Yet still averaged 15.1 YPC in 2017. Even with the horrible coaching, lack of opportunities and even worse QB play he was PFF 43rd ranked WR in the NFL. Which puts him middle of the pack for 2nd WRs.
I'd expect a huge jump in production from him under Shurmur. He should also really help out in the run game. He's one of the best blocking WRs in the NFL.
You should probably stop judging guys based solely on the stat sheet. Denver was just a horrible landing spot for a young WR.
It would not surprise me at all if Latimer had around 600-700 yards with 5-6 TDs.
Also he was behind two All-Pro/Pro Bowl type WRs. So his snap counts have been very low for his entire career. Last year was the first time he played over 20% of the snaps and his numbers went way up.
He wasn't behind two all pro receivers last year, and that increased playing time resulted in being 7th on the team with 19 reception in 11 games. Three runningbacks and a fullback got more targets.
It's one thing to say "don't judge a guy only on his stats", but there's just nothing to go by here. He doesn't have the production, and he doesn't have the playing time. There are only so many conclusions you can draw on a player who's career best season is 19 catches for 287 yards.
about this guy. Nothing's for certain but you can be pretty sure that a second round WR who has 35 catches in 4 years just isn't any good at playing WR.
As far as being stuck behind other guys and having lousy QB's here's a comparison for you - Bennie Fowler. UDFA same year as Latimer. 56 catches in 3 years after a redshirt rookie year. That's 60% more catches in one less season. Same team. Same QB's. And we all know second round picks will get more chances than UDFA all things being equal.
I'd love to believe he'll have a miraculous turn-around but my expectations for him are good ST player and 5th WR. Anything more is gravy.
... and few of them end up proving anything. Martellus Bennett and Kawika Mitchell got what they needed from a one-year stop in New York. Robert Ayers qualifies as a successful reclamation project, and Jon Beason showed enough in year one for Reese to double down on him. More often, the player just cashes a final paycheck (LaVar Arrington, Keith Bulluck, Shawn Andrews, Dan Connor) or quickly confirms that he was over-drafted (Aaron Curry, D.J. Fluker, Kelvin Sheppard).
The model for Latimer is Dominik Hixon; but he was in his second year when the Giants picked him up after the Kevin Everett trauma.
& nobody knows what impact he will have. As always , Gettleman is in the honeymoon stage of his tenure . That will change whenever there is a miscue, like signing a guy who turns out to be a flat tire . That will happen. It always does . What can be said is that the guy in question has a solid, athletic skill set. To this point he has under-achieved . Let’s hope he hits his stride as a Giant .

I know it's a different situation, but no one knows if it's a great signing yet.
I think Latimer is a completely different deal.
It almost took Amani that long. He certainly got more playing time.
Of course not. But Latimer is terrific on specials, he’s a big target, very good blocker, he’s 25, high-character, work-ethic guy. And the price is very reasonable.

How were you right?
Cautious optimism didn't pan out...

Is it as great as the Brandon Marshall signing last season?

I don't think there's a legitimate answer in camp.

Will do all the important complementary things, and has big play (based on size, speed, vertical, hands, rac) breakout potential besides.

He was a great signing with very little risk.
He gives us some size and they will have there hand full with OBJ Shepard Engram . Sounds like a good special teams player whats not to like ?
